321. Don't let Miliband gain a monopoly in the struggle against crony capitalism Left Watch
The Greatest Living Englishman's interview with Ed Miliband in today's Telegraph is worth reading in full - at least if you're a political geek - because it is a serious attempt to discover what the Labour leader thinks government should do and why he thinks it. A passage caught my eye: "What Mr Miliband wants is 'responsible...

323. Diane Abbott Twitter race row: MP faces calls to resign over 'racist' tweet | Mail Online
Black MP Diane Abbott finally apologised and deleted a tweet today over claims that she had been racist against white people. The shadow minister for public health had appeared defiant over the message that said 'white people love to play "divide and rule" We should not play their game'.She said it had been taken out of context, citing '19th century European colonial rule' being behind the message. But, she was cut short when she received a phone call during an interview on live TV while trying to explain the context behind the tweet. That call was from her boss, Ed Miliband, who was said to be furious over the remarks.

324. ConservativeHome's Platform: Tom Clougherty: Ed Balls’ suggestion of a temporary VAT cut is...
The Adam Smith Institute is well known for advocating lower taxes to encourage economic growth. So perhaps you’d expect me to be happy that Ed Balls had come around to my way of thinking, and proposed a tax cut to stimulate the economy. Well, you’d be wrong. Ed Balls’ suggestion of a temporary VAT cut is pure politics, and bad economics to boot

325. Labour councillors denounce Ed Miliband's support for cuts | Local Government
It is not just Labour MPs who rely on the trade unions to fund their election campaigns but also Labour councillors. In return the trade unions have reps on the Local Government Committee of constituency parties which choose council candidates. So it is not surprising that Labour councillors are anxious to toe the union line. So they have been attacking their leader Ed Miliband's support for spending cuts and public sector pay freeze.

326. The great wind terror: we name the guilty man – Telegraph Blogs
And it's not David Cameron. Or Sir Reginald Sheffield Bt. Or Mrs Clegg. Or Tim "Trougher" Yeo. Or Lord "Ugh" Deben. Or the noisome Chris Huhne… Though, of course, all have played their part at one time or another in the despoliation of our matchless landscape with view-blighting, fuel-poverty-creating, sleep-denying, sick-making, flood-exascerbating, price-inflating, property-value-trashing, greed-stoking, puke-making, bird-slicing, bat-chomping eco crucifixes…I'm talking about the North London Marxist trustafarian ovoid who was, as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, more responsible than any man or weird egg-creature alive for establishing the framework for Britain's disastrous wind policy. It is nicely summed up by this commenter at the Business Green website:Miliband has huge cheek, opportunistically raising his head at this point as if he is an innocent bystander.

327. David Cameron uses PMQs to attack “something for nothing” Miliband The Tory Diary
Unsurprisingly, two subjects simmered to the fore in PMQs today: the Work Programme and tomorrow’s Leveson Report. The first of these occupied most of the exchange between David Cameron and Ed Miliband. The second emerged in backbench questions. So, let’s start with the leaders’ exchange, shall we? This promised to be rocky ground for Mr Cameron, given just how underwhelming yesterday’s welfare-to-work statistics were — and that’s how it seemed at first. Ed Miliband began by quoting David Cameron, speaking last year, to the effect that the Work Programme is the "biggest, boldest effort to get people off benefits and into work that this country has ever seen." You could almost sense the embarrassment rising, like a heat haze, from the Coalition benches. But Mr Cameron rescued the position in double-quick time.

329. The euro is nothing more than a sacred cow. It is time to take it to the abattoir –...
At the turn of the year we naturally look forward to what the next twelve months might hold for us, both as individuals and as a country. But it is not a bad idea to look back to what was happening, or rather not happening, twelve months ago. What strikes me is that very few of the Guardianista or BBC establishment were then even prepared to discuss the possibility that the euro might be heading for partial, let alone complete, collapse.Yet here we are. Today Programme interviewers can no longer laugh to scorn those who have long predicted a crisis of the kind now facing the eurozone. Senior bankers and Treasury Ministers now admit to contingency planning for the odds-on case of Greece leaving the euro – and for the possibility that Italy and Spain might follow.

330. The cradle of conservatism - Telegraph
Ahead of her Radio 4 series on the events that have shaped this country’s dominant political movement, Anne McElvoy argues that Britain’s centre-Right ideas were forged in the mills and factories of the industrial North. The conference season looms and with it, the parties’ pitch to shift the political map of Britain in their favour before the next election. Austerity has sharpened the perception of an incurable North-South divide: Tories fret about their appeal to the North and Midlands and a vanishing footprint in the great northern cities. Ed Miliband’s “One Nation” Labour still fails to ignite enthusiasm in the aspirational Home Counties.Yet one of the compelling aspects of Britain’s political history is how settled wisdoms have been disrupted over time and the political geography of the country transformed as a result. So much so that the map we see today is pretty much the inverse of an older North-South divide, in which the centres driving economic prosperity were Lancashire, Yorkshire and the clanking foundries of Manchester and the mills of Bradford.

331. Ken Livingstone's spending plans would cost every London council tax payer Ł348 | Left Watch @ ConHome
A new report released today by the Back Boris campaign reveals the impact every family in London will face if Ken Livingstone was to win this May's mayoral election - Ł348 in council tax increases, and an increase in the Congestion Charge. The report, entitled "Can't Afford Ken", notes that Livingstone has made 24 spending promises that cost more money than is in the budget. These spending commitments have been made either in public speeches or in documents after he was selected as Labour’s candidate. They include a transport fare cut, a pledge to replace the withdrawn EMA scheme, a London-wide lettings agency, an "Air Quality Improvement Fund", a "Cinema Discount Card" for young people, and, bizarrely, a party in Trafalgar Square just for the Portuguese-speaking diaspora.

332. Robert Halfon MP: Conservatives should believe in good business, not big business - as the oil market shows
Today in Parliament, I will lead a debate in Parliament, urging the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Services Authority to investigate the oil market. This is for three reasons:Petrol and diesel have never been more expensive, despite a two-year freeze in fuel duty.Oil companies - we have proof - are stopping cheaper oil prices from getting to market. This hurts people on low incomes, who are filling up the family car.A professional oil trader has now given an explosive statement to my PetrolPromise.com website, explaining in detail how the oil-price is being rigged by speculators and banks........Now I want to see lower fuel taxes, too. I have always campaigned in Parliament - with the Sun, Times, Mail, Express, Telegraph, FairFuelUK, and others - for a cut in fuel duty. In the future, I will always urge the Government to reduce fuel duty if they can.But as Conservatives, we should believe in good business, not big business. If cartels and crony corporates are pushing up the cost of living, we should oppose them just as strongly as we oppose Labour’s vision of a centralised “Big State”.

333. France to stop 75% super-tax after struggling to attract top international staff | Daily Mail...
When President Francois Hollande unveiled a 'super-tax' on the rich in 2012, some feared an exodus of business, sporting and artistic talent. One adviser warned it was a Socialist step too far that would turn France into 'Cuba without sun'.Two years on, with the tax due to expire at the end of this month, the mass emigration has not happened. But the damage to France's appeal as a home for top earners has been great, and the pickings from the levy paltry.

334. Wind Industry Big Lies no 1: fossil fuels are more 'subsidised' than renewables –...
Is Labour MP Barry Gardiner vilely dishonest or just incredibly stupid? Personally – since he appears to be a litigious sort of fellow – I'm plumping for the latter. That's why, I think it's quite possible that when he was at his public school Haileybury his nickname was "Dork Brain." (Though I have no more evidence for this than Gardiner does for most of his hysterical views on climate change)But I leave you to draw your own conclusions after his recent claim, in an interview with Energy Live news, that the Coalition is favouring fossil fuel energy over wind energy through generous subsidies. (H/T Bishop Hill)

335. 100 Tories revolt over wind farms - Telegraph
David Cameron has been hit by a major protest by Conservative MPs over the Government’s backing for wind farms, The Sunday Telegraph can disclose.A total of 101 Tory MPs have written to the Prime Minister demanding that the Ł400 million-a-year subsidies paid to the “inefficient” onshore wind turbine industry are “dramatically cut”.The backbenchers, joined by some MPs from other parties, have also called on Mr Cameron to tighten up planning laws so local people have a better chance of stopping new farms being developed and protecting the countryside. The demands will be a headache for Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary, who joined the Cabinet on Friday when Chris Huhne resigned after being charged with perverting the course of justice.

336. The New Statesman's attempt to paint Sayeeda Warsi's Tory critics as racist Left Watch
If you don't think Sayeeda Warsi is an ideal Tory Chairman you are a racist. The allegation is not made directly - smears rarely are - but readers of the New Statesmen are left in little doubt. The New Statesman is not the only place where you can read similar suggestions. Monday's Independent, Ian Birrell in The Guardian and ex-Statesman hack James Macintyre have all tip-toed through not dissimilar territory. I've ignored it up until now - some of it directed to me and ConHome - because you hesitate to give legs to such sulphurous stuff but it's being repeated too often to ignore.Let me deal with the racist thing first. Run a poll of Tory members and you'll find that Priti Patel is one of their very favourite new MPs. They aren't interested in her ethnicity but love her straight-talking Tory politics. Similarly there is much enthusiasm in the grassroots for the likes of Sajid Javid MP, Paul Uppal MP and Shaun Bailey as future stars. At the last election non-White Tories were selected in many heartland seats.
