225. Labour chief in social housing owns £1m home round the corner: Councillor branded a 'hypocrite' after buying property while staying on as housing association tenant
The leader of one of Ed Miliband’s flagship Labour councils was last night embroiled in a row over claims his family is still living in ‘social housing’ – even though he owns a £1 million house nearby.Julian Bell, head of Labour-run Ealing Council in West London, has been branded a ‘hypocrite’ after buying a five-bedroom property while staying on as a housing association tenant.Mr Bell, who is a fierce critic of Coalition cuts and has protested at housing shortages, is now facing demands to explain why part of his family is still in social housing seven years after he bought his home a few hundred yards away.

226. Why George Osborne must keep on wielding the axe | Mail Online
Few chancellors of modern times have had less room to manoeuvre than George Osborne. He is a solo navigator through the deepest British recession since the Second World War, attempting to repair a broken and morally defunct banking system and weighed down by a meltdown in the eurozone over which the Government has no control. Yet there is no escaping the fact that Osborne and the independent Office for Budget Responsibility, which produces his economic forecasting, have been off beam in their projections for the nation’s return to prosperity. The failure of the economy to expand at all in 2012, and the slow growth expected over the next five years, means that Osborne will be borrowing £48billion extra between now and 2017-18.Moreover, like the Labour Chancellors before him, he made a budgetary promise when he came to office that he is now struggling to keep. Even after the terrible sacrifices made by the British people, at all levels of society, in the past two years, the national debt – the total sum of all borrowing down the decades – will not start to shrink until 2017.The difficulty with taming the awesome debt levels he inherited, which will peak at 79.9 per cent of the total production of the whole economy in 2015-16, could damage the Government’s claim to be turning the economy around.

227. Why is the US economy doing better than the UK? | John Redwood's Diary
All the so called neo-Kenysians are out and about telling us that the US is recovering well owing to further fiscal stimulus, whilst the UK is said to be faltering thanks to a government “cutting too far and too fast”. It is time to debunk this nonsense.Let me start by saying I think Keynes was a great economist. His insights into the creation of money, inflation, and growth are important. All mainstream political parties are heir to his traditions in several respects. All agree that the state should borrow to offset a fall in demand in a recession. All agree that there needs to be controls over money and credit creation with a monopoly money system organised by the state. The Central Bank has to decide on overall levels of money and credit. They do not, however, tend to follow his precepts in a boom, when they ought to be asking the state to control spending and repay debt.

228. Wind farms: Ceausescu would have loved 'em – Telegraph Blogs
Wind farms are like one of those frustratingly unripened boils: you know that you shouldn't keep squeezing but they're so noxious and irritating and hideous that you just can't resist. If you've got the same problem, then I heartily recommend you read this brilliant essay on the subject by Russell Taylor.I love his dismissal of people who claim to find wind turbines beautiful: "….a sentiment I find as credible as a Soviet peasant admiring the Tiger tank that had just squashed his grandmother."But what really grabbed me was his analysis at the end of wind turbines' totemic significance to the left. I've touched on this before myself. It's why I christened them "eco-crucifixes", because they're not really about viable energy or even saving the planet but rather, like…

229. 'One Nation Labour' would ruin the country, just like Old and New Labour – Telegraph Blogs
Old Labour wrecked the economy in the 1970s and then collapsed (despite Jim Callaghan's brave stand against the far-Left union leaders) in the aftermath of the Winter of Discontent. Then, after wrecking the economy which Thatcher and Major had fixed in the 1980s and 90s, Blair did a runner leaving NuLabour and Brown to collapse in 2010. Now, as Cameron and Osborne, hampered by their Lib Dem partners, struggle with a mountain of debt left by the Blair/Brown debacle, One Nation Labour has been born. Its prescription for recovery is no different from that of Old Labour or NuLabour. The label on the bottle has been changed but the contents have altered very little.

230. The Labour party is not even fit to run a whelk stall | Leo McKinstry | Columnists | Comment |...
IT is now almost a week since George Osborne’s historic, radical Budget and Labour has still not come up with a remotely coherent response. On all the big questions, such as pensions reform and income tax, the party’s senior politicians have either been pathetically silent or just parroted infantile class-war rhetoric.Typical of this approach was the woeful performance in the Commons by Labour leader Ed Miliband in reply to Osborne.Instead of addressing any of the far-reaching measures in the Budget he just read out a compendium of ill-connected lines from past speeches, sprinkled with some dreary invective about the public school backgrounds of some leading Tories.

231. The knives were out for Osborne – but he rescued his reputation – Telegraph Blogs
Ed Balls tells the story of a recent Labour focus group that was asked what it thought of George Osborne. One man replied: “George Osborne? Was he the one crawling around dressed in a pink catsuit?” The Chancellor has the hide of a rhinoceros, but even he would balk at being mistaken for George Galloway. Yes, he sometimes gives the impression of relishing his unpopularity, on the principle that if he isn’t hated he isn’t doing his job properly. But he would rather people loathed him than confused him with someone else. To those tempted to commiserate, he says he always expected to be reviled in office because of what he had to do, which might explain the rueful smile when he was booed by 65,000 people at the Paralympics.

232. Agency for flooding that puts greater water parsnips and voles before local people | Mail Online
The Environment Agency put water voles, greater water parsnips, silver diving beetles and large marsh grasshoppers ahead of people in the flood-ravaged Somerset Levels, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.A 250-page agency document issued in 2008 shows that years of neglecting vital dredging which used to let water drain away much faster is part of a deliberate policy to increase flooding in the areas now worst affected.

233. Ed Miliband's Wife Could Benefit From Labour's Wind Farm Policy
Labour leader Ed Miliband's wife could benefit from Labour's pro-wind farm policy if the party win the next election. Justine Thornton is a barrister who has previously helped developers in legal battles to build new wind turbines. The news comes as Ed Miliband called on Britain to "embrace" wind energy and suggested that Labour would encourage the building of more wind turbines if it wins the next election.

Ed Miliband faced embarrassment in his crusade against tax avoiders last night after it emerged a key Labour donor has saved millions of pounds by running online gambling from a tax haven. 236. Labour controlled Camden council spends £186,877 on union officials | Local Government
Amidst all the debate about the £10 million a year the trade unions find to give to the Labour Party there should be some reflection as to why the unions have so much spare cash in the first place. It is because the salaries of 2,493 union officials are picked up by the taxpayer.Today the Conservatives are highlighting the £186,877 spent by Ed Miliband’s local council, Labour-controlled Camden, on full-time equivalent union officials from Unison and the GMB trade unions. These two unions alone have donated more than £8 million to Labour in the last two years.

237. When I criticised the NHS, my elderly mother was harassed – which helps explain the mess...
Three years ago, at the very moment that he was presiding over the abominations at Mid Staffs – and, as we now know, several other hospitals – Andy Burnham, then Health Secretary, was calling me ‘unpatriotic’ for pointing out the poor performance of the NHS in international league tables.I mention it, not to have a go at the poor fellow – the rest of the country is already doing that – but to explore the connection between the tendency to shout down any criticism of the NHS and the number of British hospitals which are, as the Keogh Report put it, ‘trapped in mediocrity’. Any organisation that is treated as being beyond reproach is bound in time to become flabby, self-serving and producer-centred. It happened to the mega-charities. It happened to the United Nations. It would be surprising if the NHS were an exception.

238. Reply on Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
I recently posted the government statement of what they are doing about immigration because I know how important this issue is to many who read this site. Some of you were grateful and surprised by how much action the government is taking. Others cynically complained that it was all words, pointing out that over the last year there has still been a high level of entry.I have listened carefully to Ministers and talked regularly to them about what they are doing. I am quite sure they wish to control numbers, and are taking actions which they believe will do that in a fair and sensible way. They are well aware that so far the numbers have not reduced, but point out that it takes time to get each of these measures into effect and to ensure they are working well at each entry point into the country. They accept that the proof of their measures comes over the next year, when they expect to see results. They are of course ready and willing to examine other ways to achieve what they wish to achieve, especially if the numbers do not decline as they expect.
