209. Ed Miliband's back from holiday - which explains his welfare flip-flops Left Watch
Remember Ed Miliband's "laser-like focus on welfare spending"? Or Ed Balls' sudden conversion to "iron discipline" on the budget? How about Miliband's repeated insistence that his party wouldn't commit to reversing any cut in spending unless it was "fully funded". I do, if only slightly, but it appears the Labour...

210. Labour, bishops and Lib Dem peers derail plan to cap benefits | Mail Online
Labour joined forces with Church of England bishops and Lib Dem rebels last night to try to wreck flagship plans for an annual limit on welfare handouts.Ministers reacted with fury as Church leaders suggested that capping benefits at a maximum of £26,000 a year was somehow un-Christian.The bishops helped inflict a dramatic defeat in the House of Lords, with one even invoking the Bible as he argued against the Government’s plans. The decision to back an amendment to the Coalition plans is a major gamble for under-pressure Labour leader Ed Miliband, who has been anxious to present himself as on the side of hard-working families who play by the rules.A weekend poll showed 76 per cent of the public are in favour of the benefit cap, including 69 per cent of Labour voters. The YouGov survey also found that a significant minority – 36 per cent – want still tougher measures, saying no household should get more than £20,000 in welfare payments.Despite the Lords defeat, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith is vowing to stick to his guns. He branded the vote a ‘disgrace’ and accused Labour of sending a ‘very clear message they see nothing wrong with unlimited handouts’ or with a situation where claimants make more by staying at home than working.

212. Labour Minister Slams Ed Miliband's Rent Controls
Ed Miliband’s 1970s-style rent control policy is in further turmoil today after it was revealed that a Labour Minister had previously claimed it would be counter-productive, and ensure the poorest were "shoved out" of properties. Lisa Nandy, a rising star in Labour circles, made the comments at a Fabian's Conference on 25th January.

215. Cameron's reshuffle: too little, too late – Telegraph Blogs
David Cameron, as we know, is an arch practitioner of government by essay crisis. Every time you think it's all going to come crashing on top of him, he stays up all night on his Red Bull and Pro Plus, and dashes off something just good enough to persuade the world that the moment to send him down has not arrived quite just yet.

216. The greatest lesson of the last 50 years: change isn't always progress – Telegraph Blogs
It is all too easy for a blogger to respond a bit too much to the headlines of the day, so every now and again I think it useful to stand back and look at some long-term trends.David Cameron used to speak about Britain's broken society, and even Ed Miliband makes socialist noises about society from time to time. The Lib Dems concede, too, that there are some deep-rooted problems facing any government which could not be solved by handing everything over to Brussels.I know well enough that as a man of eighty years, if I say that many things were better in our society when I was young, those who never knew those years will condemn me as an addled old fool living in the past.

217. Michael Gove plans to cut Department for Education budget in half (which means giving up the HQ with the massage room) | Daily Mail
Education Secretary Michael Gove is to slash his department’s running costs by half in a move which will see 1,000 jobs axed.Radical changes will see one in four civil servants sacked within two years and many of the rest rotated in teams on specific projects. Some work will cease. The ministry’s vast Westminster headquarters – where Labour famously installed a contemplation room for stressed out mandarins – is also likely to be vacated.Officials in ‘corporate services’ such as IT, human resources and finance and IT are likely to bear the brunt of the cuts. The savings programme has been drawn up by the department's permanent secretary Chris Wormald, but has Mr Gove's backing.

218. Joe Armitage: On entrepreneurship and tax cuts, David Cameron is another Margaret Thatcher | ConservativeHome
Joe Armitage is Chairman of Medway Conservative Future and Deputy Chairman (Political), Rochester East Conservatives. He’s also on a gap year interning for a Conservative MP. Follow him on Twitter. On the one hand, some people claim that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher are cut from the same cloth. The Leader of the Opposition even went so far as to say Cameron was a “Child of Thatcher.” On the other, there are those within the Conservative Party who believe that David Cameron is not a conservative, that his policies are centrist and that he has abandoned conservatism: this, to me, is nonsense. The policies of the Coalition Government have produced encouraging results such as job and business creation, but they’ve also brought about an atmosphere which fosters growth, and it’s inevitable that the green shoots will appear.Ed Miliband recently told the Daily Telegraph that “Thatcher created an era of aspiration". It’s true, she did - but I also believe in decades to come, it will be said of Mr Cameron that he, too, is responsible for creation an era of aspiration. When you look at the mission of Lady Thatcher’s government and compare that mission to that of David Cameron’s government, there are many similarities. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting hard work, self-determination and expunging Britain’s dependency culture. That is also true of Lady Thatcher’s aim of self-reliance, individualism and rolling back the state in accordance with negative freedom. When you look at the policies of this Government and compare them to Lady Thatcher’s, one can see that the challenges are very similar challenges. In 1979, when the first Thatcher Government came to power, the highest rate of corporation tax was 52% and the highest Income Tax threshold was a hernia-inducing 83%. These levels of tax were discoursing growth, aspiration and self-development. When David Cameron’s government came to power, corporation tax was 28% and income tax was at 50% - obviously far lower than under Callaghan but too high nonetheless.

220. Greenpeace and The Guardian: yet again, sticking up for the bad guys – Telegraph Blogs
When is a scandal not a scandal? When it comes via Greenpeace and is splashed over the front page of The Guardian, I'd say. While obviously I'm delighted that The Guardian and Greenpeace think I'm so powerful that I have the ability to effect a 180 degree shift in government onshore wind policy just by the mere threat of standing in a by-election, I do think a little examination of news priorities might be in order here.In an op-ed for tomorrow's Daily Telegraph (which will probably appear online later this evening), I explain – not for the first time: but hey repetition is always useful if you want to get your idea across – why it was that I chose to stand in Corby as the anti-wind farm candidate. It's because I honestly believe that the Great Wind Energy Scam is by far the greatest scandal of our age. As I've argued time and again, in articles like this, this, this, and this, the wind industry is a very expensive solution to a non-existent problem.

222. Politicians’ pyjamas: Cameron wears satin, Balls prefers a string vest and Hague, a kaftan | The Spectator
Let’s talk pyjamas. Specifically, let’s talk paisley pyjamas. Never mind what poor Mr Newmark had hanging out of his; concentrate on the garment itself. You never think of politicians in pyjamas. Although now I’ve started, and I just can’t stop.David Cameron, I suspect, used to sleep in tracky bottoms and a Smiths T-shirt until really quite recently. These days, though, it’ll be a suit of something expensive and slinky, maybe black satin, or green. While Ed Miliband’s pyjama situation you just know will be chaos. Possibly he still wears the now tight and farcical Thomas the Tank Engine ones he had when he was 11. Keeps meaning to buy new ones, never does.

223. EU squanders our aid millions, says minister: (so why hasn't he done anything about it for two...
An aid minister has accused the EU of squandering hundreds of millions of pounds of British taxpayers’ cash on countries that are too wealthy to need help.Alan Duncan said that while he shared the public’s anger over the massive spending, the UK was being ‘forced’ to hand over huge amounts of money – but then has no say over how it is spent.Last night, however, a fellow Tory accused Mr Duncan of crying ‘crocodile tears’, because he had done nothing to reduce the EU aid bill despite having been in office for the past two years. One sixth of Britain’s aid budget – some £1.4billion – goes straight into EU coffers. Much is spent in relatively rich nations such as Barbados, Iceland, China and Brazil; which the UK refuses to fund directly. Some £800,000 of the EU aid budget is going on a water park and tourist complex being built in Morocco by the French owners of Center Parcs. The cash is being spent to ensure L’Oasis de Noria, on the outskirts of Marrakesh, is ‘environmentally friendly’.

224. Obama: driving a green dagger into the heart of the American dream - Telegraph Blogs
When it comes to pinpointing the nadir of the Obama administration, future historians are going to suffer a serious case of option paralysis. Was it Benghazi? The NSA? His use of the IRS to harass the Tea party? The various scandals involving his black ops department, the EPA? Obamacare?Personally, though, I think the one they will eventually plump for is Obama's Climate Action Plan of June 25 2013. The economy, after all, is everything. Without an economy you can't afford a domestic policy, let alone a foreign policy. So you'd think the very last thing any president would do as his country began to show the first vague signs of slow – and quite possibly illusory – recovery after a long recession would be to jeopardise it with a whole new raft of utterly pointless regulation and wasteful government expenditure. Why it would be like seeing a man drowning and, instead of throwing him a life line tossing him a lead weight. But that's just what President Obama has done with today's Climate Action Plan whose gory details you can read here.
