163. Ed backs off showdown with unions: Miliband accused of watering down attempts to weaken stranglehold on party
Ed Miliband was accused of watering down attempts to weaken the stranglehold of Labour’s union paymasters on his party last night amid claims that his Spring showdown with the unions will last just two hours.The Labour leader has billed the meeting with the union barons in March as an historic event that will redraw the relationship between union and party members.The changes were deemed necessary after accusations that the Unite union attempted to fix a selection in the Falkirk constituency. Labour are also reeling from publicity about Unite’s bully boy tactics during the strike at the Grangemouth petrochemical plant, when union officials intimidated staff and their families.Last weekend, it also emerged that another company boss was hounded at his family home after he announced plans to move a transport operation. Matthew Ingle from a village near Skipton, North Yorks, had to hire security guards and sought a High Court injunction after protestors descended on his home and bad mouthed him to his neighbours.

If I had to name half-a-dozen moral failures of the Labour years my choices would be...Borrowing during the good years so that the cupboard was bare when the rainy years arrived and leaving huge debts for the next generation;Creating a complex, demotivating welfare system that trapped people on benefits and discriminated against the two parent family;Allowing uncontrolled immigration that didn't discriminate between the skills of migrants so depressing the wages and opportunities of Britain's working class communities;A grade inflation in schools and a neglect of vocational education that means many young people are under-equipped to prosper in a competitive world;

170. T-shirts looking forward to Margaret Thatcher's death don't demean her: they demean the Left | Telegraph Blogs
Well that was smart. The TUC – presumably by accident rather than design (they’re not returning my calls on the subject) – has allowed its annual congress to establish the Brighton franchise of the chic new "Die Thatcher, Die!" clothing range.For those not up to speed with this latest fashion craze, renowned international couturier The Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre has unveiled its autumn collection. And its catalogue contains a couple of cheeky little numbers, including a T-shirt with a picture of Margaret Thatcher’s spitting image puppet, and the words “Hey ho the witch is dead”, and another T-shirt featuring a white cross with “Thatcher” across it and the slogan: “A generation of trade unionists will dance on her grave”....the damage is done, and we know what happens next. First there is a cry of synthetic outrage from elements of the Right. “This sick merchandise tells you all you need to know about some in the union movement – baseless, cowardly and utterly devoid of morality,” said Tory MP...

174. Mansion tax: Labour shows its true colours with this spiteful tax on homes - Telegraph
If the two Eds get their way, an Englishman’s home will not be a castle, but a leaky ruin.At last we can see exactly what kind of a Labour leader Ed Miliband proposes to be – and he is taking his party right back to the politics of envy and nihilistic class war that kept them out of office for a generation. The proposal for a new tax on people’s homes is ill-thought-out, unjust and un-British.The proposed tax is unfair on those who may be asset-rich – the elderly widow springs to mind – but whose income is low. If Labour were to pursue the policy announced last week, and set the threshold at £2 million, the result would be bizarre – from discontinued improvements to deliberate vandalism: anything to help the home owner limbo dance under the danger area. It is peculiar to try to raise money for the state by taxing this one particular form of wealth, and in this one particular way. As for Labour, they have shown their true colours. The Blairites in the party must be watching with incredulity and despair. Never mind the individual injustices – the message of the Miliband policy is that Labour is once again hostile to one of the deepest instincts of the British people: to show the energy, enterprise and ambition to want to improve your own home and to raise its value. I cannot believe Miliband will pursue this policy through to the election. If he does, he will have signed his political death warrant.
