145. Is Ed Miliband really backing away from the unions? Left Watch
Yep, the TUC conference is in full effect. Alongside yesterday’s talk of a general strike, we now have the suggestion that pensioners should occupy council buildings in protest at cuts; a “manifesto” for teachers that instructs them to avoid “non-teaching duties” such as supervising children at lunchtime; and — unsurprising, but still deeply unedifying — the sale of t-shirts revelling in the prospect of Margaret Thatcher’s death. It would all make for a grim caricature of the extreme left were it not for one important fact: it’s real.

146. Osborne throws the kitchen sink at Balls... and Balls throws it back at Osborne The Tory Diary
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown committed their party to Conservative spending plans when they fought the 1997 election. Their shrinking of the target at which their enemies could fire set the tone for the next 20 years, followed as it was by one of biggest landslide victories in British history. Voters, the orthodoxy held, are always fearful that Labour, once translated from opposition to Government, will raise taxes more than a Tory Government; and the Conservatives (once the same translation has happened) will cut spending more than a Labour Government.

147. Robert Halfon MP: Ed Miliband isn't talking about Disraeli's One Nation, and this presents Tories with a wonderful opportunity | ConservativeHome
I am one of those who believe that pessimism is a luxury that no Tory can allow himself. So, whilst we can watch Mr Miliband's speech and congratulate him for some political ingenuity — regarding his 'One Nation' clarion call — in practice this gives Conservatives a tremendous opportunity: a chance to reinvigorate the Big Society. For Labour, 'One Nation' still remains another way of saying “the State”. Looking at his speech closely, Mr Miliband argues for “collective action” through the mechanisms of the State. This has been the Socialist cry through the ages; alleviate poverty through redistribution using the levers of Government. He still is arguing for a social-democratic state that robs from the rich in order to give to the poor.Another thought: “One Nation” as expounded by Disraeli was intrinsically “Tory” — it spoke for tradition, not for its own sake, but because it provided an anchor of stability between the generations. For Labour, the '500 year old Oak Tree' is anathema because their view of “One Nation” means Year Zero.Instead of uniting, Mr Miliband's Year Zero seeks to divide. If you have inherited wealth (except, of course, if you come from Hampstead Liberal stock), if you went to a posh school, then automatically you are placed in the category of “undesirable”. An opening for class war — and an opening, too, to create an “internal enemy” — the actions of demagogues throughout the ages, and hardly the stuff of 'One Nation'.

151. Who's to blame for UK's 'cost of living crisis'? Labour, of course - Telegraph
Labour have already lost the argument on austerity and cost of living. Ed Miliband can’t do anything about the economic adjustment.Something quite unexpected happened to me at the weekend. Filling up the car with petrol, I found it to be noticeably cheaper than the last time I did it. Admittedly, this was a while back. All the same, I’ve become so hardened by years of rising pump prices, that to have my presumptions shattered in such a pleasing way was really quite a shock.Nor is it just fuel prices that have been falling. According to the British Retail Consortium, shop prices fell 1.4pc in February, following a 1pc fall in January. Even food price inflation, at “just” 1.1pc in February, is at a seven-year low.

155. Miliband Poster Girl's Union Link Dishonesty - Guy Fawkes' blog
Who would be the perfect person to introduce Ed before he delivered his big speech on trade unions this week? Why, a Labour candidate with no trade union links, of course. Miliband’s team had Birmingham Yardley candidate Jess Phillips warm up for the Labour leader, making sure she emphasised her credentials as a poster girl for Labour’s independence from the unions....Just the one problem: Jess’ claim that she was selected “Not because of my links with any union, company or political pressure group. In fact for the exact opposite reason, because I was none of these things” is a bit of a whopper.

160. A recession made in Downing Street – Telegraph Blogs
Ed Miliband is right. This is indeed a recession made in Downing Street. It was manufactured painstakingly over a decade, first in Number Eleven and then in Number Ten, by Gordon Brown. The lugubrious Fifer inherited a Chancellor's dream scenario: falling expenditure, rising revenues, strong growth and low inflation. For two years, as promised in Labour's 1997 manifesto, he stuck to Conservative spending plans, and debt was paid off. Then, purposefully and methodically, he started blowing everything away.
