82. Steve Barclay MP: Conservative Voice is for everyone on the centre right who wants to reach out...
Yesterday morning I was delighted to join the launch of Conservative Voice, a new group founded by Don Porter, alongside fellow MPs Liam Fox, David Davis, Dom Raab and Robert Halfon.Political party membership is falling across the board and progressively ageing. A key challenge is therefore how we engage and enthuse those who hold right of centre views but who do not currently identify with the Conservative Party. In doing this, the focus of Conservative Voice is unashamedly to secure more elected Tory representatives across all levels of local and national government and - above all - to defeat Labour at the next election.

83. Roger Helmer MEP: Climate alarmism is falling out of favour in the rest of the world - but...
We might as well hang up a sign in the airports: "Closed for Business". While EU leaders pontificate about prioritising growth and jobs, we have climate mitigation policies in place that massively raise energy costs and force industries, companies, jobs and investment out of the EU altogether. In the name of environmentalism, we force them to go off-shore, to jurisdictions with lower environmental standards. It's a whole spectrum of energy-intensive businesses. Metals like steel and aluminium -- a highly energy-intensive industry. Cement. Chemicals. Glass. Paper and wood-processing. We talk about "rebalancing the economy towards manufacturing" and in the next breath propose "a floor price for carbon". Then we wonder why industry sails off into the sunset. I have been writing about this for years, but it was brought home to me with added force at a dinner-briefing last night hosted in Brussels by EUROFER, the European Steel Association. Normally at these events there are speeches/briefings/presentations followed by a debate with interventions from the floor. In this case, after a couple of speeches, attention turned to dinner and the debate never happened. My carefully-crafted question was condemned to languish un-asked, so I'll ask it now.

89. David Ruffley MP: The 50p tax is bad for Britain. Scrap it. Comment
The 50p rate proves “we’re all in this together”. Or so leading modernisers will have you believe. But they’re wrong, as five hundred entrepreneurs reminded us in a letter in today’s The Daily Telegraph. They urge George Osborne to abolish the 50p top rate of income tax in this month’s Budget.Waiting until 2014 or 2015 to scrap it is risky. If the Chancellor leaves it that late, the 50p rate will have done still more damage to the economy. It could also become a political football at the General Election. Much better to get it out of the way now.It is true that some opinion polls last year showed that the 50p tax rate had public support. But would the public be quite so supportive if they were reminded that without the drive and energy of successful entrepreneurs, jobs and growth decline?Labour introduced the 50p rate in 2010, largely for class war reasons in their desperate search for votes. George Osborne, boxed in, judged that he could not be seen to cut tax for “the rich” given that his priority was to build support for reducing the biggest deficit in British peacetime history. But he must now listen to the 500 entrepreneurs against 50p as he constructs this month’s Budget. Whilst this most political of Chancellors will be concerned about “the optics” of cutting tax at a time of national austerity, he has already laid the ground for scrapping the 50p tax rate.

90. Chris White MP: The time has come for Britain to lead the way in developing a modern industrial policy | ConservativeHome
Today, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills is making a speech outlining his views on an industrial policy. This is something that I and other colleagues have been calling on the Government to deliver over a period of many months. As co-chair of the Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group – a body which brings together MPs, Peers, world-beating companies, experts, trade unions and industrial representative bodies – one of the most consistent messages I have heard from manufacturers is the need for the Government to put in place a long term framework for the UK’s manufacturing future.Government cannot do everything, but what it can do is to be clear about the sort of support it is going to give to industry, the sectors or technologies that it believes Britain can lead the world in developing and create a culture of confidence amongst British businesses.Manufacturing is particularly crucial to developing a successful industrial policy.

91. Roger Helmer MEP: Camborne are wrong about the single currency. Our recovery begins when the...
Cameron and Osborne have a clear line on the eurozone. While they think the €uro was a misguided venture, and they don’t want to join -- ever -- the argument goes that a disorderly breakdown of the €uro would be a disaster for the UK economy, and that the eurozone is such a key trading partner for the UK that any recession there would cause us huge damage.Based on this analysis, Cameron makes encouraging noises about “Big bazookas”, and (despite the Veto) about the UK’s moral support for efforts to save the €uro. And he is prepared to cough up billions of British tax-payers’ money for the IMF, knowing that much of it will be diverted to “Saving the €uro”.I think this analysis is fundamentally flawed. For a start, I don’t believe that the €uro can be saved, and I believe that attempts to do so are just throwing good money after bad.

92. Roger Helmer MEP: When they tell you that half our international trade is with the EU, that’s...
I picked up an incoming Tweet this morning from my good friend and colleague Dan Hannan MEP. It reads: “Denis MacShane told me, didactically, that we sell more to Belgium than Brazil. That, Denis, is precisely our problem.”Dan makes an important point. The fact is that between 40 and 50% of Britain’s international trade is with the EU’s 26 (EU less UK). The exact figure is debatable, because of the Rotterdam effect and other technical problems with analysing the trade statistics. There is the standard, familiar Europhile interpretation of this simple fact. “50% of our trade” (they say) “is with the EU. This, by itself, justifies our membership, and means that the costs are worth it”. You will have spotted the errors in this statement. There is the implicit assumption that trade depends on membership (Not true: ask Norway or Switzerland). There is the nice round 50%, which is almost certainly exaggerated. And there is the failure to address the European Commission’s own estimates that the trade benefits of membership amount to around 1.8% of GDP, while regulatory costs amount to about 5.5% - three times higher.

94. Blame Labour for Mid-Staffs scandal... says ex-Labour Health Secretary Frank Dobson who warned Tony Blair against targets & competition in hospitals
A former Labour Cabinet Minister broke ranks last night and disowned Tony Blair’s government for the ‘reckless’ NHS shake-up blamed for the Mid-Staffordshire hospitals scandal.Frank Dobson, Health Secretary from 1997-99, said he warned Mr Blair that a ‘mad rush’ to bring in more competition and targets in hospitals could harm patients. But Mr Blair ignored him and gave his Cabinet job to a crony who agreed to force through the changes.Mr Dobson told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I told Blair that reckless changes could undermine patient care, but he didn’t want to listen.’
