65. Alex Deane: A vitally important speech by David Davis Comment
For months - since very soon after the formation of the Coalition, in fact - many respected Conservative voices have been saying in private that not enough is being done to cut government spending and encourage growth. Yesterday, that view was given a forceful public voice in a speech by David Davis for the CPS.Alas online it lacks the compelling slides with which DD accompanied his presentation at the ICAEW conference hall (which, by the way, was packed), but I urge you to read it - for both the intellectual rigour and honesty of its message, and for the remarkably direct soundbites.

66. Chris Bryant's immigration speech isn't just a car crash, it's a full on, bollard-smashing...
During the 2010 General Election campaign, a Labour photo opp with Gordon Brown was interrupted by a car colliding with a bus stop. At that point, I thought it was as bad as things could get - how could any metaphorical car crash by a politician possibly outdo the real thing?Chris Bryant is evidently more imaginative, and has today embarked on a one man mission to prove me wrong. Belted into the driver's seat of a rhetorical red mini metro, he careered through the political media, ploughing into bollards, oncoming traffic, tourists and both mounted cavalrymen outside Horseguards.Just to ensure the job was done properly, he brought his political road-trip to a halt by effecting a head-on collision with an Alan Partridge-style joke about how easy it is to mistakenly think obese women are pregnant. The metaphorical car is definitely a write-off.

67. James Wharton MP: How Labour and the LibDems filibustered my EU referendum bill last night
Yesterday was the first day of the Committee stage of my EU Referendum Bill. Having passed its second reading not long ago, I was keen to get it into committee and make progress. The sooner it is back before the Commons for Report and can hopefully get through to the Lords the better. Sadly, however, some of the Labour members of the committee, and its only Lib Dem (Martin Horwood) set out to delay progress as much as they could.

68. Councillor Gareth Elliott: A bigger private sector would do more for poorer children Comment
The privatisation of national assets has always been a highly politically charged topic. Harold Macmillan famously likened Margaret Thatcher’s programme to “selling off the family silver”. Yet for all the scaremongering, the result has generally been a huge success. The UK’s car industry has gone from basket case to one of the most efficient in the world. Nobody today would seriously call for the renationalisation of BT, which is spending over £2bn on super-fast broadband, whilst our flag carrier, BA, is still a national champion; in fact, it is one of the most successful airlines in the world. The experience of privatisation is therefore one of success.Yet there are still areas where private enterprise cannot tread, and not because it couldn’t succeed, but because it is politically unpalatable. Education is one such example, yet it is potentially an area where the private sector could really make a difference.

69. Conservatory Tax? It was bonkers, insists Cameron as he pledges to veto plans that would cost...
David Cameron denounced plans for a ‘conservatory tax’ as bonkers yesterday. He pledged to veto the proposals that would have forced homeowners to spend hundreds of pounds extra on energy efficiency when they build an extension or fit a new boiler. The Mail revealed yesterday that Tory ministers were in revolt over the plan – an element of the so-called Green Deal.Former Energy Secretary Chris Huhne, the original architect, hit back yesterday accusing senior Tories of ‘posturing’ against the guidelines which are meant to encourage homeowners to invest in insulation and other energy-saving measures.Senior Lib Dems initially suggested they would back Mr Huhne and would continue to fight for the plans. But No10 made clear that the Premier will kill the guidelines stone dead.

70. Chris Grayling: High borrowing and high bills - Labour is the same old party - Telegraph
Labour's central argument that we need to borrow will add an extra £2,960 in debt to every working family, says Justice Secretary Chris Grayling.Over the summer we’ve seen more encouraging news that our economy is healing: the growth figures are heading in the right direction, exports are rising, foreign investment is increasing and unemployment is falling. All the reliable indicators confirm that things are beginning to recover. Labour’s central argument for the past three years - that we needed to borrow more to get things moving - has been discredited.

But for families up and down the country, life is still very tough: bills need to be paid, the car needs to go for its MOT, the children want the odd treat. For many, the cost of living remains a real struggle.

71. Robert Halfon MP: Let’s give White Van Conservatism wheels – scrap the 3p fuel tax rise!
On Tuesday, I tabled a Private Members Bill on petrol prices, supported by many other Conservative backbenchers, as well as MPs from Northern Ireland, and Scotland. (You can see an extract in the short video above.) The idea behind it was very simple: that fuel tax should be crystal clear to motorists. In essence, this would sweep away the complex regulations about what fuel garages can and cannot put on their till receipts, and replace them with one simple rule. That whenever you fill up the family car, the till receipt should say in black and white how much fuel duty, VAT, and petrol you have paid. It should also say how much is actually being spent on Britain’s roads. Simple. This would make the tax system more honest; it would be a big deterrent against any future tax-rises; and it would add pressure on the oil companies to be fair.

72. Joe Armitage: On entrepreneurship and tax cuts, David Cameron is another Margaret Thatcher | ConservativeHome
Joe Armitage is Chairman of Medway Conservative Future and Deputy Chairman (Political), Rochester East Conservatives. He’s also on a gap year interning for a Conservative MP. Follow him on Twitter. On the one hand, some people claim that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher are cut from the same cloth. The Leader of the Opposition even went so far as to say Cameron was a “Child of Thatcher.” On the other, there are those within the Conservative Party who believe that David Cameron is not a conservative, that his policies are centrist and that he has abandoned conservatism: this, to me, is nonsense. The policies of the Coalition Government have produced encouraging results such as job and business creation, but they’ve also brought about an atmosphere which fosters growth, and it’s inevitable that the green shoots will appear.Ed Miliband recently told the Daily Telegraph that “Thatcher created an era of aspiration". It’s true, she did - but I also believe in decades to come, it will be said of Mr Cameron that he, too, is responsible for creation an era of aspiration. When you look at the mission of Lady Thatcher’s government and compare that mission to that of David Cameron’s government, there are many similarities. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting hard work, self-determination and expunging Britain’s dependency culture. That is also true of Lady Thatcher’s aim of self-reliance, individualism and rolling back the state in accordance with negative freedom. When you look at the policies of this Government and compare them to Lady Thatcher’s, one can see that the challenges are very similar challenges. In 1979, when the first Thatcher Government came to power, the highest rate of corporation tax was 52% and the highest Income Tax threshold was a hernia-inducing 83%. These levels of tax were discoursing growth, aspiration and self-development. When David Cameron’s government came to power, corporation tax was 28% and income tax was at 50% - obviously far lower than under Callaghan but too high nonetheless.

73. Tim Yeo - like a cross between Ebola and Chris Huhne | Telegraph Blogs
Tim Yeo has been all over the media like an outbreak of Ebola today, alleging that George Osborne is trying to sabotage Britain's "green energy revolution" by tinkering with the Coalition's draft energy bill.Tim Yeo, president of the energy and climate change select committee, said: "The Treasury has clearly intervened in the draft bill in a way that will put up bills to consumers and put off investors by increasing their risks."This is exactly the opposite of what the Treasury says it wants," he told BBC News.Perhaps now is a good opportunity to remind ourselves why giving Yeo any kind of say in Britain's energy future is a bit like putting Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in charge of a committee with the remit Whither Israel?

74. Robert Halfon MP: Yes, Labour messed up migration. But there's nothing unConservative in critising TESCO
So much for Labour and the recasting of immigration policy. Chris Bryant’s interview on Radio 4 Today was a car-crash, not just because mistakes were made in the pre-release (Kent instead described as the place where Tesco closed a Distribution Centre, rather than Harlow, Essex, being a prime example), but because most fair-minded people know why we are in this mess in the first place. The last Labour Government allowed de facto uncontrolled immigration, and grossly underestimated the amount of migrants who would come here - especially those from Eastern Europe. They also signed all the EU Directives that allowed big companies to hire agency workers on the cheap - in technical parlance, known as ‘The Swedish Derogation’.But behind the political posturing, there is a more serious point: the problem of big corporate juggernauts, and the way they treat their workers.

For roughly ten years you have been able to take your telephone number with you when you change phone provider – imagine if you could take your bank account number with you if you decide to change your banker?Oftel, under the leadership of Sir Don Cruickshank from 1993-98, saw through legislation that forced telephone companies to allow customers to transfer their telephone number from one company to another with ease. Now the Treasury Select Committee, of which I am a member, has discussed the possibility of requiring banks to do the same.

80. Nick Faith: So Osborne wants to boost the north. Good. But he needs policies that will do the job.
‘Growth must reach the North and low-earners’. The headline of George Osborne’s article in The Times caught my eye this morning. Instead of slapping himself on the back, the Chancellor used yesterday’s positive growth figures to send out a message that he intends to create the conditions for private sector job creation outside the south east. This is a hugely significant intervention. To date, the Conservatives' strategy has been focused on painting themselves as the only party that can be trusted to take the hard economic decisions for the long term benefit of the country. At every opportunity, Labour politicians – notably the two Eds - have been ruthlessly portrayed as big spenders unable to manage the country’s credit card. Downing Street wants people to believe that Balls wouldn’t look out of place on a shopping spree with Carrie Bradshaw (she of Sex in the City fame).
