113. Peter Hoskin: Let’s look at the Thatcher Years in full, not just in parts Conservative Home...
This article first appeared in the Tuesday edition of ConHome's Party Conference Daily. You probably know the story about the blind men and the elephant. It’s the one where a group of the former touch a specimen of the latter to find out what it is like. One blind man touches a tusk, and concludes that the elephant is like a spear. Another touches the ears, and concludes that it’s like a fan. For yet another, it’s the tail, which feels like a piece of rope. And so on and so on. As John Godfrey Saxe’s verse telling of the story finishes:

114. Jeremy Hunt MP: Six NHS questions Ed Miliband and Andy Burnham can't answer | ConservativeHome
Labour's health policy is heavy on rhetoric and light on policy detail. On Tuesday, Ed Miliband pledged Ł2.5 billion extra for the NHS and social care. This is a 2.2 per cent increase – lower than the 4.4 per cent real terms increase this government has already given the NHS. Labour also left many questions unanswered – here are six:

115. Robert Halfon MP: Conservatives should believe in good business, not big business - as the oil market shows
Today in Parliament, I will lead a debate in Parliament, urging the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Services Authority to investigate the oil market. This is for three reasons:Petrol and diesel have never been more expensive, despite a two-year freeze in fuel duty.Oil companies - we have proof - are stopping cheaper oil prices from getting to market. This hurts people on low incomes, who are filling up the family car.A professional oil trader has now given an explosive statement to my PetrolPromise.com website, explaining in detail how the oil-price is being rigged by speculators and banks........Now I want to see lower fuel taxes, too. I have always campaigned in Parliament - with the Sun, Times, Mail, Express, Telegraph, FairFuelUK, and others - for a cut in fuel duty. In the future, I will always urge the Government to reduce fuel duty if they can.But as Conservatives, we should believe in good business, not big business. If cartels and crony corporates are pushing up the cost of living, we should oppose them just as strongly as we oppose Labour’s vision of a centralised “Big State”.

117. Dominique Lazanski: Britain can't afford to filter content online at home, whilst promoting an...
David Cameron is putting his full support behind the Independent Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection (pdf) that proposes an opt-in mechanism for viewing pornography. Essentially there will be filtering of legal pornography unless a user requests otherwise. It is no surprise that I support all of the arguments against this idea. The unintended consequences of website filter will “risk damaging legitimate businesses and undermining cyber security while further perpetuating the myth that this is an easy technological solution to a complex problem” according to Nick Pickles of Big Brother Watch, and I completely agree. There is no end of legitimate technical reasons not to filter websites and such arguments are what ultimately brought down the SOPA bill in the USA earlier this year.

118. Local elections 2012: By linking UKIP to the BNP, Baroness Warsi is insulting voters she should...
As I settled down to watch the BBC coverage of the election results, I groaned when I saw that Baroness Warsi had been deployed to put a gloss on the good kicking the voters had given the Tories. But, however low my expectations, nothing prepared me for the quite disgraceful, cynical and plain stupid attempt she made to try to link the UK Independence Party with the BNP.it's bad enough that the Chairman of the Conservative Party doesn't know the difference between 'less' and 'fewer', but her ignorance of basic grammar - unsurprising in the representative of a party opposed to grammar schools - is trifling compared to the sheer wrongheadedness of her attempt to smear the disillusioned natural conservative supporters who had deserted her party to put their cross by UKIP candidates.

119. Labour have failed Corby | Local Government
Cllr David Sims, is Leader of the Opposition on Corby Borough council and one of those who has applied to be Conservative candidate for the Corby and East Northamponshire byelection. He believes the Labour-run council is failing residentsThe Council Chamber for Corby Borough Council is in a building called The Corby Cube. This was a building project beset by design faults and costs running out of control. This debacle, together with a number of other financial shortcomings by Corby's Labour controlled council, has gradually begun to persuade the local electorate that Labour cannot be trusted to look after taxpayers' money. There have also been attempts by Labour to keep the information from the public and we have presented a picture to the public that Labour are running a 'cover-up council'.

120. Alex Deane: A vitally important speech by David Davis Comment
For months - since very soon after the formation of the Coalition, in fact - many respected Conservative voices have been saying in private that not enough is being done to cut government spending and encourage growth. Yesterday, that view was given a forceful public voice in a speech by David Davis for the CPS.Alas online it lacks the compelling slides with which DD accompanied his presentation at the ICAEW conference hall (which, by the way, was packed), but I urge you to read it - for both the intellectual rigour and honesty of its message, and for the remarkably direct soundbites.

121. David Cameron uses PMQs to attack “something for nothing” Miliband The Tory Diary
Unsurprisingly, two subjects simmered to the fore in PMQs today: the Work Programme and tomorrow’s Leveson Report. The first of these occupied most of the exchange between David Cameron and Ed Miliband. The second emerged in backbench questions. So, let’s start with the leaders’ exchange, shall we? This promised to be rocky ground for Mr Cameron, given just how underwhelming yesterday’s welfare-to-work statistics were — and that’s how it seemed at first. Ed Miliband began by quoting David Cameron, speaking last year, to the effect that the Work Programme is the "biggest, boldest effort to get people off benefits and into work that this country has ever seen." You could almost sense the embarrassment rising, like a heat haze, from the Coalition benches. But Mr Cameron rescued the position in double-quick time.

123. Think Tank Head: Conservatism Is All About Optimism | The Daily Caller
To Arthur C. Brooks, Ph.D., the president of the American Enterprise Institute, America is obviously exceptional “for what we reward” as “you see it from all the people around the world desperate to get here.”Until cultural institutions and values were deconstructed by the left, America traditionally rewarded hard work and opportunity, a magnet for entrepreneurs everywhere.

124. Dozens of Tory MPs will join rebellion over vote on Europe referendum - Telegraph
David Cameron faces the biggest rebellion of his premiership next week as dozens of Conservative MPs are expected to defy the Government and vote in favour of a referendum on Britains relationship with Europe.Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee of back-bench Conservative MPs, warns today that a referendum would give the British people “one of the most important decisions about the future of our democracy and our economy”.In an article for The Daily Telegraph, Mr Brady says that it is not appropriate for the Prime Minister to seek to use Parliamentary whips to force Conservative MPs to vote against the plan for a referendum. Next week, the Commons will vote on a motion calling for a referendum, either on Britain leaving the European Union or to renegotiate this country’s relationship with Europe.

125. David Laws battles for classical liberalism in the Lib Dems Think Tanks
Eight years ago a group of Lib Dems contributed essays to a volume called the Orange Book which sought to shift thinking in the Party away from socialism and towards liberalism. While social liberalism in the Party was well represented, the case for economic liberalism was not. Nor had it been for many years even before the merger with the SDP. Jo Grimond believed in economic liberalism but he ceased to be Liberal Party leader in 1967.

127. As long as the Eurosceptic vote is fragmented, the Euro-enthusiasts will keep winning –...
In 1993, Canada’s Conservatives were wiped out. The governing party lost all but two of its 156 MPs and began a lengthy spell in opposition. Defeat on such a scale doesn’t happen for just one reason, of course, but the Tories’ single biggest disadvantage is easily identified: the Right-wing vote was split........You can probably guess where I’m going with this argument. The latest YouGov poll has my party on 32 per cent, and UKIP on 9 per cent. Together, that’s a Conservative government; separately, it’s a Labour government. It’s true, of course, that not every UKIP voter is a former Tory. Then again, the relevant question is not ‘how did they vote before?’ but ‘if UKIP didn’t exist, how would they vote today?’ It seems not unreasonable to assume that the majority would support the most convincingly Eurosceptic party on offer.

128. What's the difference between a high street banker and a back street fraudster? | The Deep End (ConservativeHome)
Has the backlash against the bankers gone too far? Perhaps, but given the sheer number and variety of banking scandals, it’s a wonder they’ve got off so lightly. In an essay for the London Review of Books, John Lancaster’s theory is that because the scandals have come so thick and fast, we haven’t been able to focus on what really should be making us angry
