65. We’re right about the euro - that’s why Europe is angry - Telegraph
The latest summit failed to provide any solution to the crisis in the single currency, writes Boris Johnson. I know some people are unsettled to see all these powerful Europeans getting so very, very cross. Angela Merkel has said that we weren’t even negotiating properly. Nicolas Sarkozy can hardly bring himself to mention Britain by name and has been filmed apparently refusing to shake David Cameron’s hand. Across the Continent, the papers are full of wrathful headlines about the general arrogance and stupidity of the Englanders/Anglais/Inglesi. I watched some poor Lib Dem Euro MP who seemed about to explode with disgust at the UK’s handling of the recent summit.

66. EU to set up euro-election 'troll patrol' to tackle Eurosceptic surge - Telegraph
The European Parliament is to spend almost £2 million on press monitoring and trawling Eurosceptic debates on the internet for "trolls" with whom to debate in the run-up and during euro-elections next year amid fears that hostility to the EU is growing.

69. As long as the Eurosceptic vote is fragmented, the Euro-enthusiasts will keep winning –...
In 1993, Canada’s Conservatives were wiped out. The governing party lost all but two of its 156 MPs and began a lengthy spell in opposition. Defeat on such a scale doesn’t happen for just one reason, of course, but the Tories’ single biggest disadvantage is easily identified: the Right-wing vote was split........You can probably guess where I’m going with this argument. The latest YouGov poll has my party on 32 per cent, and UKIP on 9 per cent. Together, that’s a Conservative government; separately, it’s a Labour government. It’s true, of course, that not every UKIP voter is a former Tory. Then again, the relevant question is not ‘how did they vote before?’ but ‘if UKIP didn’t exist, how would they vote today?’ It seems not unreasonable to assume that the majority would support the most convincingly Eurosceptic party on offer.

70. I don't want supporters of the euro to crawl in penitence; I just want them to stop repeating...
Douglas Carswell recalls vainly trying to convince a Tory researcher in the mid-1990s that Britain shouldn’t join the euro. That researcher is now a Cabinet minister and has, to be fair, changed his mind. (I have a pretty good notion of whom Douglas has in mind, because I was there during their altercation. Indeed, I had the same argument with the fellow dozens of times.)

71. Ambrose Evans-Pritchard: 2012 could be the year Germany lets the euro die - Telegraph
So we enter Year IV of the Long Slump, the cruellest yet though not the most acute. There will be no Chinese credit explosion this time, no real help from post-bubble India or over-stretched Brazil. It will be a global downturn on all fronts, aborting what remains of recovery even before industrial output in the OECD bloc has regained its pre-Lehman peak. The second wave will hit with youth unemployment already at 45pc in Greece and 49pc in Spain; and with the US labour participation rate already at depression levels of 64pc.

72. The Today programme forgets to ask Nick Clegg about the euro. How odd… – Telegraph...
As Holmes told Watson long ago, it is often the fact that the dog did not bark which tells us something important. So it was with the Nick Clegg interview on the Today programme on Thursday. Naturally enough, the interviewer spent more time on what, when and who the Prime Minister told his deputy about the famous "veto" at the December meeting of the EU Council than anything else. That gave Mr Clegg plenty of time to drag out the familiar old chestnut about the three million British jobs put at risk should the United Kingdom become once again a self-governing nation. This time, however, Mr Clegg went further – asserting, without contradiction or question, that those jobs would be "at risk" unless Mr Cameron got back to the "top table". Mere membership of the EU, it seems, is no longer enough to ensure access to its markets. That, however, was not the most remarkable feature of the interview. That was the unspoken agreement between Mr Clegg and the Today interviewer that neither of them would utter the word "euro".Odd, wasn't it? That Council meeting was all about the euro. The biggest threat to the jobs of British workers is the economic shambles in our markets caused by the euro.

73. Euro-enthusiasts can't quite hide their contempt for the masses – Telegraph Blogs
How do you get a poll to register a large majority in favour of EU membership? Easy. Confine your survey to quangocrats, charity heads, civil servants, CEOs of multi-national corporations and the like. The pro-EU lobby group, British Influence, has been trying to get people excited about its poll of “leading figures” – that is, 700 bien pensant metropolitans of whom, sure enough, 69 per cent want to stay in the EU. Indeed, the only surprise is that, of a demographic specifically selected for pro-Brussels bias, 31 per cent don't agree.

74. Is the survival of the euro in Britain's interest? – Telegraph Blogs
Not necessarily. The prosperity of the eurozone plainly is in our interests: it absorbs around 40 per cent of our exports, and comprises countries which are our friends and allies. But the survival of the euro and the prosperity of its constituent nations are two very different things.True, the break-up of the euro would involve costs. But it's becoming obvious that the costs involved in holding it together are much higher

76. Ireland's woes will continue until it leaves the euro – Telegraph Blogs
In the 1990s, you used to hear the argument that Ireland was growing thanks to the EU. It wasn’t true. Ireland was growing because it had restructured its tax system so as to stimulate enterprise. The sectors which were doing best – notably software and financial services – were those which were untouched by Brussels regulation.

77. France and Greece are just the beginning – Europe is entering a downward spiral –...
I write in the Daily Mail about Europe's rejection of austerity. It's not just the French and Greek election results. Within the past ten days, the Dutch and Romanian governments have also been brought down over their attempts to make savings. The same thing will keep happening across the Continent, at election after election.Eurocrats, too, are tiptoing away from cuts, belatedly aware of how outrageous it sounded to argue for austerity in the 27 member states while demanding a 6.8 per cent budget increase for themselves. We can expect a very different strategy now, one based on higher spending and deeper European integration. Stand by for Eurobonds, a common finance minister, pan-European taxes, EU-wide stimulus packages etc. This was, of course, the approach which brought Europe to its present…

78. A new relationship with the EU?
Mr Cameron’s article yesterday in the Sunday Telegraph did represent an important advance in government thinking. He now agrees with those of us who say we need a new relationship with the EU. He agrees it is not just a case of saying “No” to future transfers of power, but getting powers back that have already been ceded.I also agree with him that holding an In/Out referendum soon would be bad news if the In campaign won. The Uk would then have little bargaining power to get a better relationship, and would have lost the chance to leave the EU if things got worse.

79. Tory fury at Nick Clegg's 'pygmy' insult to Britain as Lib Dem leader accused of talking nation down...
Mr Clegg’s U-turn, and his suggestion that Britain is too weak to survive without the patronage of Brussels, sparked a furious reaction from Tory MPs, with one describing his comments as ‘arrogant, petulant and self-indulgent’.One, Peter Bone, said: ‘If he were really a man of his word he would stop talking down Britain, withdraw from the Coalition and force an election – then we would see just how much public support there is for his brand of Euro-fanaticism.’

80. EU emissions up: US emissions down | Roger Helmer MEP
We’ve become so inured to the Brussels story that the USA is the Great Polluter (although it’s now #2 to China in absolute terms), and to the idea that the EU is the good guy on CO2 emissions, that it comes as a shock to challenge it. Isn’t it the EU which goes to Cancun and Copenhagen and Rio and pleads for firmer climate action, while the bad guys like the USA, China and India drag their feet? Isn’t it the EU which has passed vast and wasteful laws closing down coal-fired power stations, setting up cumbersome Emissions Trading Schemes, and mandating renewables? Isn’t it a prominent EU member-state — the UK — which has gone a step further, and passed a law requiring emissions reductions of 80% by 2050?
