289. The Tory action this weekend is in Windsor – Telegraph Blogs
The blogs editor doesn’t much like it when I use this space to plug my engagements, so I’ll keep this brief. If you’re free on Saturday, come to what promises to be a superb political conference in Windsor. Speakers include Roger Scruton, Tim Montgomerie, Toby Young, Matt Elliot, Syed Kamall and me.Windsor is an outstanding example of what Conservatives can achieve unencumbered by coalition. Its local authority is, by any measure, one of the most innovative and successful in England: the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has improved services while cutting taxes, exactly as Centre-Right administrations should. Many of the great Conservative policies of past years, from allowing tenants to buy their homes to bringing in entrepreneurs to turn around failing schools, were pioneered by Tory councillors.

291. Going for growth – deregulation
Past governments and the present government speak the language of deregulation, but end up regulating more.Opponents always try to blame deregulators for whatever ills in society regulation was trying to cure. Sensible deregulators no more want fraud, credit bubbles, unsafe factories or bad employers than anyone else. There are two main issues. How effective is each regulation – does it really reduce the incidence of the ill you dislike? Is the cumulative burden of all the regulation tolerable, or does the burden in turn create worse ills like too few jobs and lower living standards?

299. Why the Eurozone crisis is a bigger problem for Balls than Osborne Left Watch
Ed Balls is garlanded by the Wintour and Watt double act in the Guardian today for helping to keep Britain out of the Euro: his name takes precedence in their roll of honour over Gordon Brown. (Rightly, the duo also cite John Major and William Hague; wrongly, they omit Sir James Goldsmith.) The list is a reminder of how Balls and Brown forged...

300. The EU has failed. Who are the truly guilty men? – Telegraph Blogs
Being intellectually wrong isn’t the same as being morally wrong. It’s a distinction that is often forgotten in politics, where we habitually dismiss our opponents as liars, blackguards and fiends. Convinced that our opinions are based on demonstrable facts, we easily slip into assuming that the person who disagrees – the person who refuses to see reality as we do – must have some unstated motive. We can’t help it. The tendency to take short-cuts, to press new information into our existing world-view, is encoded in our DNA.

301. European criminal justice and the sovereignty of the British people
Yesterday Parliament debated whether to opt back in to 35 of the EU Criminal Justice measures. We have recently rightly opted out of all 135 measures, as we were entitled do under our version of the centralising Lisbon Treaty. I and others told Parliament why we do not wish to opt back in to anything.

302. Gordon Ramsay: 'I can't believe how easy life is in British prisons' - Telegraph
Gordon Ramsay, the chef, has criticised the level of comfort provided in Britain’s prisons after teaching inmates to cook for a new television series.Ramsay, 45, said he was astounded when he discovered convicted criminals were given five meal choices every night and constant access to television, video games and gym facilities. The restaurateur visited London's Brixton Prison to film Behind Bars, a Channel 4 show in which he teaches 12 inmates to cook and sell their Bad Boys’ Bakery produce to businesses on the outside. However, he said he was disappointed with the prisoners’ lack of work ethic, claiming the lax regime inside gave them no incentive to toil over a stove.

303. Reply on Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
I recently posted the government statement of what they are doing about immigration because I know how important this issue is to many who read this site. Some of you were grateful and surprised by how much action the government is taking. Others cynically complained that it was all words, pointing out that over the last year there has still been a high level of entry.I have listened carefully to Ministers and talked regularly to them about what they are doing. I am quite sure they wish to control numbers, and are taking actions which they believe will do that in a fair and sensible way. They are well aware that so far the numbers have not reduced, but point out that it takes time to get each of these measures into effect and to ensure they are working well at each entry point into the country. They accept that the proof of their measures comes over the next year, when they expect to see results. They are of course ready and willing to examine other ways to achieve what they wish to achieve, especially if the numbers do not decline as they expect.

304. Does a party have to be united to stay elected?
I feel one of the old myths reappearing in the political debate. Some are out and about saying that the Conservative party has to be more united to stay elected. They clearly remember no political history.Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair were both very successful Prime Ministers when it came to winning elections. Both won three in a row with large majorities. Both led divided parties, with very visible splits. Margaret Thatcher faced continuous opposition especially in the early years and at the end, from the so called “wets”, senior politicians including Cabinet members who thought her economic policy was wrong. They regularly briefed the press against her. There were occasional resignations and vocal opposition in the Commons from backbench sympathisers of the rebels.
