161. Germany will still sell us her BMWs if we change our relationship with the EU
The main argument that advocates of our current EU relationship advance is that we do more than half our trade with the EU so we have to maintain full membership to keep all those jobs. It is the most stupid argument in current UK politics. It is extraordinary that it has been trotted out uncritically for more than fortty years, and still many in the media fall for it.It is often based on the lie that more than half our trade is with the rest of the EU. This figure ignores our very profitable trade in services, where well over half is with non EU countries. It ignores the Rotterdam and Amsterdam entrepot effect, where trade with the rest of the world passes through these large ports and is counted as EU trade when it is with places further away.

162. Governments need to be seen to be in control
David Cameron has enjoyed two great successes as Prime Minister. He led western opinion on the subject of Libya, worked with France to intervene militarily, and presided over a successful military intervention which helped the rebels bring down the dictator. I did not myself think this a good way to spend UK money and risk lives, but I accept that he did it well and his international reputation was enhanced by it. It would be churlish to deny him the credit he is due for the successful action in its own terms.More importantly, he did refuse to allow the UK’s name to go on a new Treaty for fiscal austerity in the EU, and forced the partners to come up with an intergovernmental Treaty of 25 instead of an EU Treaty. This made him extremely popular with the public, reaching a temporary high of support.

164. KWASI KWARTENG: The Tory's new rising star reveals his vision for Britain after Eurogeddon |...
t's difficult to see how we could avoid the economic storm. Our Government would have to reaffirm its commitment to the deficit programme and further cuts in spending would have to be implemented. For this reason, I think a cash freeze of benefits for three years would be simple, fair and save a significant amount. It seems only fair that people receiving benefits should also experience restraint, when people in employment have had to endure pressures due to the cost of living and stagnant wages.

165. The EU: loved by corporates, loathed by entrepreneurs - Telegraph Blogs
What does British business think about our relationship with the EU? It depends what kind of business you ask.The multinationals, the mega-banks, the corporate affairs types who, rather than running firms, drift into positions in their professional associations – these tend to be overwhelmingly pro-Brussels. It’s understandable: they have a great deal invested the present system. Many of them have been brought together by the Mandelsonian lobbyist Roland Rudd in a group called Business for New Europe.Few British companies, however, are gigantic multinationals. Most people in the private sector work for firms with fewer than 20 employees. These businesses can’t afford compliance departments, and certainly can’t afford Brussels-based lobbyists to ensure that regulations suit them rather than their competitors. They face all the costs of EU regulation but get few of the supposed benefits of easier market access.

166. The debt crisis spreads to Spain and Italy: will MPs vote to continue Britain's liabilities?...
The Government has responded to Mark Reckless’s anti-bailout motion with a wrecking amendment. Where his motion “requires” the government to halt the bailouts, theirs “urges”. The Whips’ motion also deletes the reference to the illegality of the bailouts – an illegality which no one in Europe seriously challenges.

168. Controlling the deficit
Yesterday the government reported that its additional borrowing in May amounted to £17.4 billion, £1.1 billion less than in May the previous year. In the first two months of 2011-12 total borrowing reached an additional £27.4 billion, compared to £25.9 billion in the same period the previous year.Total national debt as a proportion of National Income (excluding the bank debt, PFI, PPP and pension deficits) hit 60.6% compared to 53.8% a year earlier. These borrowing figures confirm the pattern in the Red Book and regularly reported on this site. Public spending is still rising overall. Public debt is not yet at an alarming level in relation to the size of the economy, but the government does have to tackle pension liabilities and state owned banks as the totals are much higher than the stated narrow public debt figures.

170. Where the bailout money goes – Telegraph Blogs
If you're wondering why Greece is being so obstreperous about the money it's being offered, ponder this chart (hat-tip, zerohedge). Of every euro given to 'Greece', the Greek authorities get to spend just 19 cents; the rest goes on rescuing bankers and bondholders from the consequences of their malinvestments. Yet again, the poor are bailing out the rich.

171. Nick Clegg amuses his little cult by sneering at the 1950s. Are families really happier now?...
Whilst I would not want The Daily Telegraph and these blogs to become a festival site of back-scratching, I have to commend both Cristina Odone's column of today on Mr Clegg’s diatribe against marriage and the society of the 1950s and Charles Moore's Saturday article on Mr Cameron's attempt to “meddle with the Monarchy”. Not only are they each persuasive insights into their separate subjects but they both say a great deal about the Prime Minister, his deputy and the Government.

172. Sir John Major advises David Cameron on foreign policy. Does he tell him the truth about Europe?...
I have explained often enough on my blog and elsewhere why I was a supporter of the ideals of European unity and integration sixty years ago, and how experience led me to change my mind. So while I criticise Sir John Major for not seeing, when he was Prime Minister, the significance of the giant step towards the single European state inherent in the Maastricht Treaty, I have to compliment him on grasping at last why we “rebels” fought so hard against it.

173. If Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the FT is a free market newspaper, God help France – Telegraph...
Mon centre cède, ma droite recule, situation excellente, j'attaque. The lower he sinks in the opinion polls, the more pugnacious Nicolas Sarkozy becomes. His favourite target is Britain – specifically, free-market capitalism as he imagines it to be practised in Britain.Earlier today, in an especially bizarre outburst, he picked on the Financial Times. 'The FT, as they say in informed circles, has always defended the Anglo-Saxon model, considering the French incorrigible and that we would do better to align ourselves to the Anglo-Saxon model,' he said during a television debate. 'The FT has thought for many years that the solution for the world is that there should be no law. I think exactly the opposite.'There's nothing wrong with national stereotypes, Sarko, but get them right, death of my life and the sacred blue. The notion that the FT is a doctrinally capitalist newspaper is so far off the mark that it's hard to know where criticism should begin. Since at least the early 1980s, the FT has been a corporatist paper of the Centre-Left, occasionally pro-business, but never pro-market. It opposed Margaret Thatcher's economic reforms, taking its hostility so far that it was, in effect, the only British newspaper openly to regret her victory in the Falklands War. Never mind Tony Blair; it backed Neil Kinnock in 1992. It was the single strongest supporter of ERM membership. It loudly applauded the monetary splurge which followed the credit crunch.

175. MPs ignore petition calling for end of government's foreign aid budget | Daily Mail Online

Jean-Claude Trichet tells us the world faced a second Lehman crash in the days and hours before EU leaders launched their €720bn (£612bn) defence fund.
