276. A lesson from Louise Mensch's GQ interview Tory MPs
Mensch said:"I’m not even a PPS (parliamentary private secretary, the lowest run on the ministerial ladder). It’s kind of annoying. What do I have to do to get promoted over here? Am I being disloyal? I don’t know.""I need to sit down with my whip and say "What do I have to do?" No, every time there is a raft of PPS promotions and my name is not on them, I have to sit down and think ‘What am I doing wrong?"There is no reason whatsoever why Mensch shoudn't be a PPS. 278. Councillor Alan Dean accused of being 'Malcolm Tucker of local politics' in voicemail row |...
A councillor who left an expletive-laden message on a junior colleague's answerphone has been accused of being the 'Malcolm Tucker of local politics'.Liverpool City Council’s Labour chief whip Councillor Alan Dean has been compared to the foul-mouthed spin doctor in the hit political comedy The Thick Of It after the voicemail was leaked online. The character, played by new Doctor Who Peter Capaldi, is best known for his screaming tirades at Cabinet ministers and his underlings. And Cllr Dean pulls a remarkable impersonation of Tucker in an answerphone message for former Labour councillor Jake Morrison.Cllr Dean can be heard on the voicemail asking Cllr Morrison 'what the hell he was playing at' after apparently telling a local paper he may step down after just one term in office. He then continues his tirade, repeatedly swearing, before shouting: 'You have really p***** on your chips this time mate'.Cllr Morrison, who became the city’s youngest elected councillor when he won an election aged 18 in 2011, was suspended shortly afterwards by the Labour party following complaints about his behaviour by fellow council member Wavertree MP Luciana Berger.

How does failed US president Obama keep a straight face when ordering the British public to vote to remain in the EU?The US is part of NAFTA – the North American Free Trade Agreement. This was signed by Canada, Mexico and the United States creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. NAFTA came into force on January 1st 1994 and superseded the Canada-United States Free Trade AgreementSo, NAFTA is a kind of North American Common Market just like we used to have in Europe before the political elites changed the European Common Market into their grand political project – the European Union.

281. Councillor Gareth Elliott: A bigger private sector would do more for poorer children Comment
The privatisation of national assets has always been a highly politically charged topic. Harold Macmillan famously likened Margaret Thatcher’s programme to “selling off the family silver”. Yet for all the scaremongering, the result has generally been a huge success. The UK’s car industry has gone from basket case to one of the most efficient in the world. Nobody today would seriously call for the renationalisation of BT, which is spending over £2bn on super-fast broadband, whilst our flag carrier, BA, is still a national champion; in fact, it is one of the most successful airlines in the world. The experience of privatisation is therefore one of success.Yet there are still areas where private enterprise cannot tread, and not because it couldn’t succeed, but because it is politically unpalatable. Education is one such example, yet it is potentially an area where the private sector could really make a difference.

282. Tory Wars: Every National Scandal Will Now Involve Cameron's Successors Positioning Themselves
Acting as a human buffer in the House of Commons chamber yesterday, the insurmountable Eric Pickles separated Michael Gove and Theresa May, the two Conservative cabinet ministers who have been warring recently. When the Home Secretary gave way for the Education Secretary she tried to shuffle past Pickles, handbag in hand, presumably with the intention of leaving the chamber. Pickles blocked her path, shot her a cold glance, and pointed his finger at the empty space next to Gove. May reluctantly sat down and was forced to endure the ensuing sparkling performance of her colleague.

284. Robert Halfon MP: Let’s give White Van Conservatism wheels – scrap the 3p fuel tax rise!
On Tuesday, I tabled a Private Members Bill on petrol prices, supported by many other Conservative backbenchers, as well as MPs from Northern Ireland, and Scotland. (You can see an extract in the short video above.) The idea behind it was very simple: that fuel tax should be crystal clear to motorists. In essence, this would sweep away the complex regulations about what fuel garages can and cannot put on their till receipts, and replace them with one simple rule. That whenever you fill up the family car, the till receipt should say in black and white how much fuel duty, VAT, and petrol you have paid. It should also say how much is actually being spent on Britain’s roads. Simple. This would make the tax system more honest; it would be a big deterrent against any future tax-rises; and it would add pressure on the oil companies to be fair.

285. Joe Armitage: On entrepreneurship and tax cuts, David Cameron is another Margaret Thatcher | ConservativeHome
Joe Armitage is Chairman of Medway Conservative Future and Deputy Chairman (Political), Rochester East Conservatives. He’s also on a gap year interning for a Conservative MP. Follow him on Twitter. On the one hand, some people claim that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher are cut from the same cloth. The Leader of the Opposition even went so far as to say Cameron was a “Child of Thatcher.” On the other, there are those within the Conservative Party who believe that David Cameron is not a conservative, that his policies are centrist and that he has abandoned conservatism: this, to me, is nonsense. The policies of the Coalition Government have produced encouraging results such as job and business creation, but they’ve also brought about an atmosphere which fosters growth, and it’s inevitable that the green shoots will appear.Ed Miliband recently told the Daily Telegraph that “Thatcher created an era of aspiration". It’s true, she did - but I also believe in decades to come, it will be said of Mr Cameron that he, too, is responsible for creation an era of aspiration. When you look at the mission of Lady Thatcher’s government and compare that mission to that of David Cameron’s government, there are many similarities. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting hard work, self-determination and expunging Britain’s dependency culture. That is also true of Lady Thatcher’s aim of self-reliance, individualism and rolling back the state in accordance with negative freedom. When you look at the policies of this Government and compare them to Lady Thatcher’s, one can see that the challenges are very similar challenges. In 1979, when the first Thatcher Government came to power, the highest rate of corporation tax was 52% and the highest Income Tax threshold was a hernia-inducing 83%. These levels of tax were discoursing growth, aspiration and self-development. When David Cameron’s government came to power, corporation tax was 28% and income tax was at 50% - obviously far lower than under Callaghan but too high nonetheless.

286. Labour voters - and even The Independent - support IDS' benefits cap, leaving Miliband and the...
YouGov found (£) (PDF) that 69% of British people, including two-thirds of Labour supporters, either support the Coalition's benefits cap of £26,000 per household or think it should be even stricter. Only 16% want a more generous cap or no cap at all. The cap is one of the reasons why welfare reform is the most popular part of the Coalition's programme. In times of plenty hard-working families are more willing to indulge a wasteful benefits system but when the "squeezed middle" is facing a decade of flat or falling incomes there is no support for any indulgence of any kind.
