I'm new to stocks and I'm kind of curious as to what stock is and what are up and coming stocks as well. A simple, straightforward explanation for laymen would be nice.

Simply put, a stock is something a company uses in order to raise its capital. It can also get bank loans and issue bonds, if it wants. Stock is effective in raising capital without raising debt. Meanwhile, up and coming stocks are the kind of stocks that are called as such because they promise big dividends.
