- 1. Wind farms vs wildlife - The Spectator
Wind turbines only last for ‘half as long as previously thought’, according to a new study. But even in their short lifespans, those turbines can do a lot of damage. Wind farms are devastating populations of rare birds and bats across the world, driving some to the point of extinction. Most environmentalists just don’t want to know. Because they’re so desperate to believe in renewable energy, they’re in a state of denial. But the evidence suggests that, this century at least, renewables pose a far greater threat to wildlife than climate change.

- 2. Professor Ian Plimer Slams the Great Wind Power Fraud – STOP THESE THINGS
A simple evaluation of ideological electricity shows that it is unsustainable. The answer is certainly not blowing in the wind. The amount of energy embedded in steel pylons, concrete footings, blades, wiring, magnets, land clearing and roads is more than a wind pylon would ever generate in its working life. Wind farms cannot generate electricity in a gentle zephyr or a gale, cannot operate continuously and optimistically operate at 20 per cent of nameplate capacity.

- 3. Coal Ash Is More Radioactive than Nuclear Waste: Scientific American
The popular conception of nuclear power is straight out of The Simpsons: Springfield abounds with signs of radioactivity, from the strange glow surrounding Mr. Burn's nuclear power plant workers to Homer's low sperm count. Then there's the local superhero, Radioactive Man, who fires beams of "nuclear heat" from his eyes. Nuclear power, many people think, is inseparable from a volatile, invariably lime-green, mutant-making radioactivity.Coal, meanwhile, is believed responsible for a host of more quotidian problems, such as mining accidents, acid rain and greenhouse gas emissions. But it isn't supposed to spawn three-eyed fish like Blinky.

- 5. The dirty secret of Britain's power madness: Polluting diesel generators built in secret by foreign companies to kick in when there's no wind for turbines - and other insane but true eco-scandals | Daily Mail
Thousands of dirty diesel generators are being secretly prepared all over Britain to provide emergency back-up to prevent the National Grid collapsing when wind power fails. And under the hugely costly scheme, the National Grid is set to pay up to 12 times the normal wholesale market rate for the electricity they generate. One of the main beneficiaries of the stopgap plan is the Government itself, which stands to make hundreds of millions of pounds by leasing out the capacity of the generators in public-sector property including NHS hospitals, prisons, military bases, police and fire headquarters, schools and council offices. But the losers will be consumers who can expect yet further hikes in their electricity bills in the name of ‘combating climate change’.The scheme is expected to cost £1 billion a year by 2015, adding five per cent to energy bills.

- 6. One million useless solar panels - JoNova
Only five years ago Australia had a mere 20,000 solar systems installed on homes across the country. Now thanks to a Gonzo-Big-Daddy-Government we have over one million solar systems, almost all of them producing electricity that could have been made for something like a fifth of the price with coal. The Clean Energy Regulator spins it as though wasting money on inefficient equipment in the hope of reducing world temperatures is a good thing for Australia.

- 10. Wind power costs up to ten times more! | Roger Helmer MEP
That’s a lot of money. The wind industry wants you to believe that the cost of wind power is not much more than that of conventional generation, and is coming down. They mutter on about “grid parity”, and the rising prices of fossil fuels. It’s been clear to me for some time that they’ve failed to account for a number of vital factors, but I didn’t know quite how many vital factors. Now I’ve got hold of a paper by Gordon Hughes, Professor of Economics at Edinburgh University, written for Lord Lawson’s Global Warming Policy Foundation. And it makes stunning — and alarming — reading. It’s called “Why is wind power so expensive?“. And it says that wind costs nine to ten times as much as Combined Cycle gas.

- 11. Sustainable energy just isn't …. well, sustainable | Roger Helmer MEP
I’ve just returned from a flying visit to Vaasa, Finland, with the European Energy Forum. The delegation was led by Slovenian MEP Romana Jordan. Vaasa boasts an “energy cluster” of cutting-edge companies in the energy field, and we spent a very solid day with Wärtsilä, a global Finnish company developing and making very large internal combustion engines. These have been widely used in shipbuilding, where the company has a substantial market share, and has production and assembly operations around the world, including key ship-building nations like China and Korea. But increasingly, engines of this type are also used for power generation, especially as back-up for wind. I’d always assumed that conventional gas-fired generation was the natural back-up for wind, but it seems that these machines are also ideal for the purpose. They can run on heavy or light fuel oil, or natural gas (think shale gas), and on bio-fuels and some oil wastes. They ramp up rapidly as the wind drops, and can switch instantly — literally instantly, we saw it done — from gas to diesel.Wärtsilä has made a rational commercial decision to market these machines as back-up for wind, given the commitment of European governments to renewables. But the message I took away was that wind, as a significant contributor to power generation, absolutely requires back-up.

- 13. Wind turbine fires 'ten times more common than thought', experts warn - Telegraph
Study backed by Imperial College finds wind turbines prone to "catastrophic" fires but the true scale of the problem is unknown. Wind turbines may catch on fire ten times more often than is publicly reported, putting nearby properties at risk and casting doubt on their green credentials, researchers have warned. The renewable energy industry keeps no record of the number of turbine fires, meaning the true extent of the problem is unknown, a study backed by Imperial College London finds on Thursday.

- 14. WWF: wilful, woeful, culpable ignorance | Roger Helmer MEP
I recently wrote about Prof Gordon Hughes’ very thorough and striking report on the economics of wind power, which shows that when you include the essential conventional back-up, wind costs nine to ten times as much in capital terms as a regular gas-fired power station, and achieves little or no CO2 emissions savings. You might just as well throw money into a bottomless pit.....So how do those doughty green campaigners at WWF respond to these numbers? Do they pause and reconsider? Not a bit of it. Do they start to question their simplistic assumptions? Oh no. Jenny Banks, a policy officer at WWF-UK, says “It’s ridiculous to expect that a dash for gas at the expense of renewables would lead to bigger carbon cuts. This is based on a very idealistic view of the effectiveness of the EU emissions cap”.Oh no it’s not, Jenny. It has nothing whatever to do with the “EU emissions cap” (she means the EU ETS), which as we all know has utterly failed. No. It’s based on a very realistic view of the economics and ecological implications of wind power. Wind power is a disaster. It’s simply gesture politics. WWF is basing its policy on a simplistic, old-fashioned view of renewables, and is failing to check the reality.

- 15. Wind turbines ARE a human health hazard: the smoking gun - Telegraph Blogs
How much more dirt needs to come out before the wind industry gets the thorough investigation it has long deserved? The reason I ask is that it has now become clear that the industry has known for at least 25 years about the potentially damaging impact on human health of the impulsive infrasound (inaudible intermittent noise) produced by wind turbines. Yet instead of dealing with the problem it has, on the most generous interpretation, swept the issue under the carpet – or worse, been involved in a concerted cover-up operation.

- 16. Ministers at war over secret wind farm evidence - Telegraph
An official study of the impact of wind farms and renewable energy on the countryside is being suppressed by the Department of Energy, Coalition sources have disclosed to The Daily Telegraph. The newspaper has learnt that a new Government row over wind farms is blocking a report that could provide official confirmation that the controversial turbines can harm rural areas.Sources have said that the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) — run by Ed Davey, a Liberal Democrat — wants to stop Owen Paterson, the Conservative Environment Secretary, publishing a major report that he has commissioned on renewable energy and the rural economy.
