33. Climategate 2.0: junk science 101 with Michael Mann – Telegraph Blogs
At last, I've arrived.Michael Mann, inventor of the Hockey Stick, has written to the Wall Street Journal branding me a "denier" and a "contrarian" and "silly." These are badges of honour I shall wear with pride. The letter is interesting for lots of reasons, not least its grotesque hypocrisy. "In recent years", he writes, "attacks on climate science have become personal" – as if somehow the real victims of all this are not the innocent taxpayers being screwed to pay for the great green boondoggle, but ordinary decent climate scientists like Mann and his Hockey Team just trying to get on and do their job.

36. Taxing oil and gas
UK consumers pay dearly for their fuel, mainly thanks to the very high rates of tax on petrol and diesel, and substantial tax on domestic fuels through company tax and VAT as well. In the debate on Scotland’s future the issue of oil and gas tax revenue is more narrowly focused on Petroleum Revenue Tax, a tax on production, and on corporation tax on the producing companies. So what has been happening to this?

Foreign lorry drivers could be offered fuel at hugely discounted rates if they fill up in England – just as British motorists struggle under record prices.Kent County Council wants to set up a ‘duty free’ zone so hauliers coming from France will buy fuel in Dover rather than the other side of the channel where it is currently cheaper. It could mean fuel prices in the port being slashed by 30 per cent.

41. Is Ed Miliband for or against a fuel crisis? - Telegraph
Nearly half of all Labour MPs are sponsored by Unite, the union which has called a strike of well-paid fuel tanker drivers. When fuel tanker drivers last went on strike, in 2000, Tony Blair feared it could cost him his job. He admitted afterwards that the speed with which the dispute escalated had taken him by surprise. The Coalition is not making the same mistake. With the Unite union still more than a week away from its threatened stoppage, contingency planning appears well advanced. The Government’s civil contingencies committee has met and military personnel are being trained to deliver fuel. Motorists have been sensibly advised by Downing Street to make sure they have full tanks for the Easter break, prompting accusations of scaremongering. This is one of those instances where the Government is damned if it does, damned if it doesn’t.David Cameron will be acutely aware that with the Tory party’s poll ratings falling after an unpopular Budget, the prospect of garages running out of petrol is hardly an appealing one. And as George Osborne warned yesterday, the impact on a struggling economy could be devastating. The political risks to the Government if the strike goes ahead are – as Mr Blair will testify – all too real. But perhaps even more vulnerable is Ed Miliband, the Labour leader. For this dispute will throw into sharp relief Labour’s unhealthy dependence on Unite. The union keeps Labour afloat financially. Between 2007 – when it was formed through the merger of Amicus and the TGWU – and the 2010 general election, it gave Labour just under £11 million. Nearly half of all Labour MPs are sponsored by Unite. In return it has a big say in the party’s policy-making. A former Labour general secretary has said: “It is absolutely fair to describe the Labour Party as the political wing of Unite.”

43. UK national debt hits staggering new record of over £1TRILLION | Mail Online
The Government's £1trillion debt mountain is the legacy of nearly a decade of the state living beyond its means under Gordon Brown's Labour government, and the pain caused by the financial crisis. The debt, which is measured as the state's liabilities minus its cash, only increased gradually in the early part of the century when the economy was booming. But the financial crisis sparked an explosion in Whitehall borrowing.

44. The Wets are reclaiming the Tory party - Telegraph
It was David Cameron’s worst week until it became Ed Miliband’s worst week – and then, within hours, it was Cameron’s worst week again. If you blinked at the wrong moment, you missed a whole epoch in national politics. George Galloway was still strutting around the broadcasting studios exulting in the damage he had done to the Labour leadership (which was being described in excitable Labour circles as terminal) when Unite announced that there would be no – repeat, no – haulage strike over Easter, thus rendering the government-induced panic over petrol even more ridiculous. Then this comedy of ineptitude began to look more like tragedy when a woman was critically burned as a more-or-less direct consequence of ministerial warnings about an imminent fuel shortage: warnings that were transparently designed not to avert a crisis but to create the impression of one in order to discredit Labour and its trade union allies.
