97. Drivers punished for going green - Telegraph
Motorists face having to pay increased road tax as the Treasury considers plans to claw back hundreds of millions of pounds in revenue that will be lost as drivers opt for greener cars. The Daily Telegraph has learnt that government officials have begun private discussions with the motoring industry and drivers’ groups about an overhaul of the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rules. The talks come as ministers try to prevent a fall in tax revenues as more motorists choose smaller, cleaner cars that incur a lower rate of duty. Labour has accused the Coalition of planning a “stealth tax” on drivers, effectively punishing them for going green.Ministers say that while they have not finalised their plans, changes may be necessary to ensure the “sustainability of the public finances”.

102. Report: MPs Should Ignore EU Rules and Challenge Brussels to 'Do Its Worst'
MPs should unpick EU laws, declare the UK Supreme Court to be the country’s highest authority, and challenge Brussels to "do its worst", the head of the Civitas think tank has urged in a new report. In his report, The Demise of the Free State: Why British Democracy and the EU Don't Mix, Dr David Green admits that such a challenge to the EU's authority would amount to a "unilateral declaration of independence", and says that this is preferable to an immediate renegotiation, allowing us to take time unpicking EU laws one-by-one.Dr Green writes: "It is tragic to watch the free people of Britain, who historically led the way in establishing modern freedom and democracy, absent-mindedly give up their powers of self-government."

103. Joe Armitage: On entrepreneurship and tax cuts, David Cameron is another Margaret Thatcher | ConservativeHome
Joe Armitage is Chairman of Medway Conservative Future and Deputy Chairman (Political), Rochester East Conservatives. He’s also on a gap year interning for a Conservative MP. Follow him on Twitter. On the one hand, some people claim that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher are cut from the same cloth. The Leader of the Opposition even went so far as to say Cameron was a “Child of Thatcher.” On the other, there are those within the Conservative Party who believe that David Cameron is not a conservative, that his policies are centrist and that he has abandoned conservatism: this, to me, is nonsense. The policies of the Coalition Government have produced encouraging results such as job and business creation, but they’ve also brought about an atmosphere which fosters growth, and it’s inevitable that the green shoots will appear.Ed Miliband recently told the Daily Telegraph that “Thatcher created an era of aspiration". It’s true, she did - but I also believe in decades to come, it will be said of Mr Cameron that he, too, is responsible for creation an era of aspiration. When you look at the mission of Lady Thatcher’s government and compare that mission to that of David Cameron’s government, there are many similarities. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting hard work, self-determination and expunging Britain’s dependency culture. That is also true of Lady Thatcher’s aim of self-reliance, individualism and rolling back the state in accordance with negative freedom. When you look at the policies of this Government and compare them to Lady Thatcher’s, one can see that the challenges are very similar challenges. In 1979, when the first Thatcher Government came to power, the highest rate of corporation tax was 52% and the highest Income Tax threshold was a hernia-inducing 83%. These levels of tax were discoursing growth, aspiration and self-development. When David Cameron’s government came to power, corporation tax was 28% and income tax was at 50% - obviously far lower than under Callaghan but too high nonetheless.

State pensions handed out to future generations will be ‘derisory’, with cash reserves set to run out as soon as next year, a report has warned.A ‘serious flaw’ in the national accounts will leave the Government short of funds to pay pensioners within the next year, according to the Centre for Policy Studies think-tank.As a result, the Treasury will soon be forced to raid income tax receipts in order to keep up the payments, it said.An academic at the CPS warned that the research shows the current level of state pension is ‘unsustainable’.

108. Middle England for wind turbines and expensive energy? Pull the other one. – Telegraph...
I note that the green lobby is trying to spin the protests at Balcombe in East Sussex as Middle England in revolt against fracking. What absolute rot! Never mind that some of the protestors were seen sitting in comfy middle-class-style camping chairs and drinking tea out of actual china cups (there will always be the odd useful idiot at these events) – the fact is that this was part of a well-orchestrated campaign by the usual suspects of the green-stained hard left to close down Western industrial civilisation by whatever means they can.Fracking is the best hope we all have of a quick economic recovery, lower energy prices and an end to the lunacy of onshore and offshore wind. Why, then, would any even half-way informed Middle Englishman or Middle Englishwoman oppose it?

110. Rebalancing the economy
The government’s economic plan rightly said it intended to cut the share of the economy taken by the public sector, and boost the share of manufacturing and production. The aim is to reverse the dramatic move in the other direction under Labour. In their last three full calendar years they presided over more than a 10% fall in production industries output, and a 3.7% increase in public sector real output.

111. One million useless solar panels - JoNova
Only five years ago Australia had a mere 20,000 solar systems installed on homes across the country. Now thanks to a Gonzo-Big-Daddy-Government we have over one million solar systems, almost all of them producing electricity that could have been made for something like a fifth of the price with coal. The Clean Energy Regulator spins it as though wasting money on inefficient equipment in the hope of reducing world temperatures is a good thing for Australia.

112. SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Boris, the lost Rolling Stone | Mail Online
Would you give this busker 20p? Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, showed off his musical skills — or lack of them — with an impromptu performance on an acoustic Gibson guitar at St Pancras Station before meeting winners of a busking competition.Boris (above) used to hero worship Keith Richards in his youth and, aged 16, tried to emulate the Rolling Stone by buying a pair of tight purple cords and playing (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction on a borrowed guitar.‘My abysmal failure to become a rock star only deepened my hero worship,’ said Johnson.
