177. Ed Miliband's masterstroke to beat the floods? Let's call in a fleet of oil lorries to 'vacuum up' water
Last week The Mail on Sunday published the first extracts from a book by the former Labour Mayor of Doncaster, Martin Winter, which gives a revealing and at times hilarious insight into Ed Miliband’s character.Winter, with whom Miliband lived while campaigning to become an MP, described how the future Labour leader told him a year before the financial crash of 2008 that the ‘economy was about to fall off a cliff’ – and how Labour planned to hold a snap Election before voters found out, but had to abandon the idea.It also disclosed how Miliband set fire to Mr Winter’s office and bought a Muslim prayer mat to replace the burnt carpet.

178. Germany will still sell us her BMWs if we change our relationship with the EU
The main argument that advocates of our current EU relationship advance is that we do more than half our trade with the EU so we have to maintain full membership to keep all those jobs. It is the most stupid argument in current UK politics. It is extraordinary that it has been trotted out uncritically for more than fortty years, and still many in the media fall for it.It is often based on the lie that more than half our trade is with the rest of the EU. This figure ignores our very profitable trade in services, where well over half is with non EU countries. It ignores the Rotterdam and Amsterdam entrepot effect, where trade with the rest of the world passes through these large ports and is counted as EU trade when it is with places further away.

179. David Cameron shoots himself in the foot on the rural vote » Spectator Blogs
Police this week were granted the authority to carry out random, unannounced checks at the home of anyone who has a gun license. Why? They claim that shooters may be ‘vulnerable to criminal or terrorist groups’ and this is the way to tackle the ‘problem’. The new Home Office guidance assures us this won’t occur ‘at an unsocial hour unless there is a justified and specific requirement to do so.’ Some get-out clause.

185. The Axing of Gove: Cameron at his most cowardly | Speaker's Chair
They got their man in the end. Every teacher up and down the country has been rejoicing. Or so we’re led to believe.Which has always been part of Michael Gove’s problem. You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of teachers (they’re usually the head teachers) who have publically backed him and his reforms. Groupthink acts as a natural disinfectant to any would be dissenters.

187. EU's green taxes are killing our OAPs AND why we should all be afraid of press regulation | UK |...
My Ukip colleague and Express commentator Patrick O’Flynn confronted the Labour politician Douglas Alexander on BBC 1’s Question Time a few weeks ago when this subject was raised. He made the point it was utterly misleading for Red Ed to imply he was in any way a saviour of the vulnerable. For it was when he was Energy Secretary that he pushed through the 2008 Climate Change Act which led to huge subsidies being added to our energy bills and restrictions on how the UK can provide energy.

189. EU plans to dissolve Tate & Lyle`s `Mr Cube` | News | UKIP MEPs
Today in the European Parliament, UKIP MEP and farmer Stuart Agnew lambasted EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Cioloş over the EU sugar quota system that is crippling the Tate and Lyle sugar factory in London with 850 jobs at stake. The American owners of Tate and Lyle Sugars may be forced to close its London factory because of EU tariffs on sugar imports. There is a lot of sugar in the world the company could buy, but the EU tariff regime prevents them from buying this sugar economically, and the tarriff-free cane quota is far too small for Tate and Lyle."It [Tate and Lyle] needs more tariff-free raw material," Stuart Agnew told Commissioner Ciolos. "It's got to have that to keep its refinery supplied. At the moment it's slowing down; its closing at weekends, its losing its critical mass and it means the costs of refining are becoming uncompetitive and the factory is going to close and you, actually, are the one person in the world who can keep it open. The beneficiaries of your proposal will be the sugar beet industries in France and Germany - not in Britain - because in Britain, we obeyed EU laws and we closed factories three years ago, and those factories cannot be rebuilt by 2015."

190. Wind turbines: a disaster for birds | Roger Helmer MEP
I’m receiving a lot of letters regarding the shooting of songbirds in Malta for sport. While I’m not opposed in principle to the shooting of birds for sport or for the pot, the annual carnage in Malta seems disproportionate and a possible threat to the species involved. I have accordingly raised the matter several times with the Commission, without any satisfactory answer. This is a good illustration of the ineffectiveness of European Institutions in delivering solutions to problems that concern citizens.

191. A question for Commissioner Oettinger | Roger Helmer MEP
Yesterday I attended a hearing on the future for gas, organised by ALDE — the Liberal Group in the European parliament. An aside: most of ALDE is, in fact, fairly liberal, and pro-free-market. So our UK Lib-Dems are a square peg in a round hole. I don’t normally attend ALDE events, but it was an opportunity to put a question to Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger — and I’m taking my new duties as UKIP Energy Spokesman seriously. Merely to introduce myself: “I’m Roger Helmer, a member of the United Kingdom Independence Party, and I speak for the Party on Industry & Energy” makes a statement, literally and figuratively, and ruffles a few feathers.

192. EU plan to slap VAT on food | Express.co.uk - Home of the Daily and Sunday Express | UK News
EU plans for a radical tax shake-up could cost struggling families and pensioners £800 a year. The European Commission wants VAT exemptions on food, children’s clothes and other essentials abandoned in an effort to harmonise the sales tax across Europe. Its plans come after the Coalition raised the VAT rate to 20 per cent last year but kept an exemption for food, children’s clothes, passenger travel, books, newspapers and other products.Last night the proposals sparked outrage among politicians and public-spending campaigners who attacked the Eurocrats for trying to interfere in Britain’s tax affairs. Ukip leader Nigel Farage said: “In their desperation to raise cash, the EU is prepared to do anything and hurt the most vulnerable.
