In 2001 he moved to post of CEO of the wind turbine company REpower Systems AG and remained there until 2007. From February 2008 he was CEO of electric power company RWE subsidiary RWE Innogy. In 1999 he was made an Honorary Professor of chemistry at the University of Hamburg.Vahrenholt was for years a true believer in climate alarmism — until he read “The Hockey Stick Illusion”. He is now a convinced sceptic, and recently collaborated with colleague Dr. Sebastian Lüning to write a new book “The Cold Sun: Why the Climate Crisis Isn’t Happening”, currently only available in German, but scheduled for publication in English later this year.

137. “Demand-side management”: Blackouts by another name..and why “green energy” is economic nonsense | Roger Helmer MEP
In a recent speech Ed Davey announced that energy intensive companies would be paid to switch off their machinery during times of high demand. As many have noted, this not what happens in healthy energy markets. Although this policy is called ‘demand-side management’, jargon does not disguise what is still a blackout. But simple economics can determine a much better approach to energy policy than the managed decline preferred by the deeply unpopular minority party in the coalition.

139. What do the election results tell us?
Labour won 2158 seats, Conservatives 1005 and Lib Dems 431. Congratulations to Labour on their success. Thank you to all those outgoing Councillors who have worked hard and who now have been asked to stand down.SNP and Plaid came fourth and fifth, with the Greens picking up 40 seats in sixth place, or fourth place amongst UK wide parties. The English Democrats lost their 2 Councillors and UKIP made no net gains, staying with 9.This leaves Labour controlling 75 Councils, the Conservatives 45, the Lib Dems 6 and SNP 2. No other party controls a Council. Turnout was a very low 32%.All parties and anyone who believes in democracy should be worried that 68% did not think it worthwhile voting. There was plenty of choice on the ballot papers in many places. If people still did not think there was sufficient choice they could have stood themselves. So why was there such a mass abstention?

141. Thinking about thorium | Roger Helmer MEP
I have previously written about thorium, a metal which offers an alternative to uranium for nuclear energy. Its supporters argue that it offers benefits in terms of safety, very little radioactive waste, no material suitable for weapons, and fuel availability not for centuries but for millennia. The biggest barrier to thorium development is not technical, but commercial. Existing players in the nuclear business have a massive investment in uranium technology, and would need big incentives to develop what is, in essence, a parallel substitute technology.

142. Face It, The Right Are Going to Lose the Next UK General Election, Unless...
David Cameron has said he thinks schools should teach mainly in imperial measurements rather than in nasty, foreign, and undeniably French metric.Funny that. It's almost like he'd had spies at the rowdy Conservative conference fringe event the night before - staged by smokers' rights campaigner Forest and Conservatives for Liberty - where I raised this very topic in a speech on Europe. I noted the irony that even though we defeated Napoleon in 1815 and Hitler in 1945 we still seem to have inherited half their policies all the same. From Hitler, inter alia, we got the clampdown on smoking and the obsession with environmentalism. From Napoleon, among other things, we got the metric measurement system - despite the fact that most of us continue stubbornly to think in pints and miles rather than half litres and kilometres.

143. My investment secret: be as boring as you can » The Spectator
Dull old smelly shares are often a better deal than ‘new economy’ ones.Have a read of the following list and see if you can guess its significance: lubricants, iron ore, steel, oil, pharmaceuticals, ships, telecoms, food packaging, oil, property. With the exception of telecoms and property, and perhaps pharmaceuticals, are they just boring, old, dirty industries which are part of Britain’s industrial heritage but play a declining part in our dynamic, 21st-century service-based economy?
