17. Rebalancing the economy
The government’s economic plan rightly said it intended to cut the share of the economy taken by the public sector, and boost the share of manufacturing and production. The aim is to reverse the dramatic move in the other direction under Labour. In their last three full calendar years they presided over more than a 10% fall in production industries output, and a 3.7% increase in public sector real output.

18. Exclusive: the NHS report that Labour tried to block » Spectator Blogs
It emerged this morning that Labour MPs took the extraordinary step of blocking the publication of the Health Select Committee report into the NHS – because the conclusions backed up government reforms. I have just been handed details of this report, and it’s clear why Labour wanted it suppressed: it contradicts the party’s attack message. Here are the main points:

21. How we got into this mess
Article on how New Labour ruined the British Economy...On Wednesday I was asked to write an article on how we got into the current economic mess by the Daily telegraph. They told me they wanted it for Monday’s paper. On Friday after I had written it they changed their minds and said they did not want a piece about that after all. I thought I would share it with you here:A couple of years ago many people thought all was well with the world. The economy was no longer an issue. Even some Conservatives would tell me they thought Gordon Brown had done a pretty good job, and that Bank of England “independence” was excellent. Endless repetition of the propaganda, ”We have abolished boom and bust”, lulled many into false security. Two years on and how different it all looks. Even the government has given up repeating the boom and bust mantra, realising hubris came before a tumble. Gordon Brown did not make the Bank of England “independent”. He gutted and filleted it, taking away its duty to manage the government’s own debt, and removing the responsibility to supervise the banks.

24. Britain unleashed: its not money that matters - its markets - Telegraph
If the economy is to grow, Britain’s entrepreneurs must thrive. In the first part of a week-long series examining the health of the free market, Charles Moore asks why the spirit of Adam Smith has given way to a culture of monopoly and over-regulation that stifles innovation.

26. Controlling the deficit
Yesterday the government reported that its additional borrowing in May amounted to £17.4 billion, £1.1 billion less than in May the previous year. In the first two months of 2011-12 total borrowing reached an additional £27.4 billion, compared to £25.9 billion in the same period the previous year.Total national debt as a proportion of National Income (excluding the bank debt, PFI, PPP and pension deficits) hit 60.6% compared to 53.8% a year earlier. These borrowing figures confirm the pattern in the Red Book and regularly reported on this site. Public spending is still rising overall. Public debt is not yet at an alarming level in relation to the size of the economy, but the government does have to tackle pension liabilities and state owned banks as the totals are much higher than the stated narrow public debt figures.

28. The Left hates Margaret Thatcher because she reminds them they are wrong about everything | Daily Mail
Now and again, we are reminded of the sheer nastiness of a certain kind of Leftie. Not, let me stress, all Lefties: I have Labour friends who are motivated by a more or less uncomplicated desire to help the disadvantaged. But they march alongside some committed haters who define their politics not by what they like, but by what they loathe. They also define opponents not as human beings with whom they disagree, but as legitimate targets.A lack of empathy, bordering almost on sociopathy sits behind their talk of caring and sharing. On sale at the TUC Conference, before a storm of protest forced their withdrawal, were T-shirts glorying in the eventual death of Margaret Thatcher.‘A generation of trade unionists will dance on Thatcher’s grave,’ says one, emblazoned with the image of her tombstone.Another is wrapped in a bag printed with the words: ‘In the event of Thatcher’s death, open bag and wear T-shirt immediately.’ The T-shirt has a picture of the former prime minister’s Spitting Image puppet, with the slogan: ‘Hey ho the witch is dead.’Unbelievably, the ‘unemployed’ workers who produced them are taxpayer-funded.Stop and think for a moment about what these T-shirts are celebrating.Lady Thatcher is a frail and elderly grandmother. Yes, she was a strong-willed, divisive politician — and thank heaven she was.A more conciliatory figure would almost certainly not have made the changes necessary to rescue Britain from the mess we were in by the late Seventies.

29. State debt and the Bank of England
Today I want to concentrate on the narrower definition of the nation’s debts – the £1300 billion of official borrowing in the name of the nation that gets measured in the international comparisons, some 80% of GDP. This excludes the public sector pension deficits, the semi nationalised bank liabilities and the private finance guarantees.

30. Petrol heads and rail nuts
Transport policy is a strange UK battleground between car enthusiasts and rail fans. There is a reluctance by some of the participants to recognise that both trains and cars require burning large amounts of fuel, they both pose safety hazards which increase as speed increases, but both are important to many people’s lives. They are both noisy neighbours. New roads and new railway lines are equally unpopular with the people living near to the proposed route.

31. David Laws battles for classical liberalism in the Lib Dems Think Tanks
Eight years ago a group of Lib Dems contributed essays to a volume called the Orange Book which sought to shift thinking in the Party away from socialism and towards liberalism. While social liberalism in the Party was well represented, the case for economic liberalism was not. Nor had it been for many years even before the merger with the SDP. Jo Grimond believed in economic liberalism but he ceased to be Liberal Party leader in 1967.

32. Germany will still sell us her BMWs if we change our relationship with the EU
The main argument that advocates of our current EU relationship advance is that we do more than half our trade with the EU so we have to maintain full membership to keep all those jobs. It is the most stupid argument in current UK politics. It is extraordinary that it has been trotted out uncritically for more than fortty years, and still many in the media fall for it.It is often based on the lie that more than half our trade is with the rest of the EU. This figure ignores our very profitable trade in services, where well over half is with non EU countries. It ignores the Rotterdam and Amsterdam entrepot effect, where trade with the rest of the world passes through these large ports and is counted as EU trade when it is with places further away.
