- 113. Liberal Vision » Blog Archive » ASH abuse of public money must end
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is a campaigning health charity set up in 1971 by the Royal College of Physicians to work towards eliminating the harm caused by tobacco. This could have been a force for good - afterall there is nothing intrisically wrong with wishing to reduce the harm caused by tobacco. It rather depends how you go about it – and that is so often determined by who is footing the bills.ASH receives huge amounts of money from the taxpayer and sadly, like so many publicly funded bodies with too much money and too little scrutiny it has NOT gone about its task well. ASH has now become a fat, over-staffed, political, and single-minded organisation hell bent on eradicating smoking from the face of the earth, by whatever means necessary.

LABOUR leader Ed Miliband constantly trumpets his commitment to “nation” politics. Tragically that nation is not ours. It is the European Union’s federal superstate. This is the truth behind his wilfully obscure rhetoric about Britain’s relationship with the EU.

Eric Pickles has stepped in to stop ‘bullying’ councils from fining people who rent out their driveway.Last year town halls began threatening households with fines of up to £20,000 for renting out their driveways if they had not secured planning permission for a ‘change of use’.But the Communities Secretary announced yesterday that new regulations, which came into force two weeks ago, will prevent councils from making money from ‘resourceful and entrepreneurial families’.He said the government guidance would encourage people to make a bit of extra money, and insisted that homeowners have a ‘fundamental right’ to rent their driveway.

So was the gist of a pair of Headlines I saw the other week, and been meaning to mutter something about on this blog ever since.Anyone else see the logic in this?Around 26th Feb, George Osborne says “UK has Run out of Money“, and seems to be going ahead with a Fuel Tax rise at a time everyone’s screaming out for him to cut the damn things to stop harming the economy + cut government spending to fund Tax cuts. Then a few days later, there is the headline “Foreigners to get £20,000 HIV Drugs FREE on the NHS“….

- 120. Prime Minister's Questions: Get Miliband an Ambulance
It’s Labour's economic focus week, so as you might expect Ed Miliband decided to run for the National Health Service (NHS), and why not? He’s in urgent need of treatment after all.Last week he was the “sick man” of party leaders, and this week he needed a political ambulance to get him from the scene of the crash. He hoped that ambulance would be talking about a subject he feels safe on: Britain's healthcare system. His first question was about cancer waiting times. He said that two million people were awaiting treatment. Cameron gently pointed out that 15 percent more people were being treated now than under Labour, and that average Accident and Emergency waiting times were down.

The London Mayor addresses a rally of Conservative activists tonight, before his official speech to the conference faithful in Birmingham tomorrow.Mr Johnson vowed to take on the 'quitters, the splitters, the kippers' who are trying to undermine the Tory party. And he mocked defectors with an extraordinary sex joke. He told delighted Tory activists:'The EU commission wants to ban vacuum cleaners on the grounds that they are too powerful.‘If you do not handle your vacuum cleaner correctly, you may end up inhaling the hamster – the budgerigar through the bars of the cage.‘And I have read that there are some people – probably the type who are thinking of defecting to UKIP – who present themselves at A&E with barely credible injuries sustained through vacuum cleaner abuse.’The outspoken remark is likely to infuriate UKIP supporters, and will draw comparisons to when defence minister Anna Soubry said of Mr Farage: 'I always think he looks like somebody has put their finger up his bottom and he really rather likes it.'

- 127. What's Going On Inside Britain's National Health Service?
I have to declare my position before you start reading this: I think the UK's National Health Service is pretty awful. My experiences with it over my 27 years on this planet have been less than ideal, and it is with this in mind that I ask the question: "What is going on in our National Health Service?"Don't get me wrong, there obviously has to be some way to protect the "most vulnerable" in society, as Ed Miliband might put it, using the most provocatively emotional language he can to back up his idea that everyone and anyone should be offered "free" healthcare, with the "free" part in reality ripped from your pay cheque every month without your permission. *Deep breath*I get into a lot of discussions with conservatives and pinkos alike wherein we debate the merits of Britain's National Health Service. While I can acknowledge that on a day-to-day basis many lives are saved – I stand by the fact that I truly believe the harm being done for the benefit of the system, and within the system, are not commensurate with the benefits it offers to Britain.
