- 1. How to fix the NHS: a doctor's prescription | The Spectator
I’m a doctor, and I don’t care about the NHS. In this country, that’s an almost heretical statement — but it’s true. What I mean is that I have absolutely no interest in ensuring its survival simply because it’s a great national treasure. What I care about is making sure that we have the best possible and most cost-effective healthcare system. And as it happens, despite the strikes, panic and doom-mongering, I think the NHS — by which I mean a nationalised healthcare model — is the best option available, if only someone were brave enough to make the right changes in the right way.

- 2. Labour's private hospital stitch-up: Shocking evidence of how the Left sabotaged NHS success story
Shocking evidence of how Labour and union figures had the first privately run NHS hospital declared a failure has been uncovered by the Daily Mail. There are growing calls for an inquiry into how Hinchingbrooke in Cambridgeshire was rated ‘inadequate’ by the Care Quality Commission watchdog – only months after winning an award for patient care. But the Mail has learned that:Individuals who helped draw up the CQC’s damning report have close ties to the Labour Party and unions which oppose NHS privatisation. The local NHS body, which suddenly slashed the hospital’s funding and imposed arbitrary fines, is heavily influenced by Labour activists.

- 5. Double standards II?
The day before yesterday we looked at the different approaches to the health and financial sectors when large companies make mistakes. I agree with those who wrote in to say one of the worst features of banking was the way the state bailed them out instead of making them pay their own losses and sort themselves out, whilst protecting depositors rather than bondholders and shareholders. You may recall I was against the bail outs at the time. One of my reasons for opposing the equity bail out was the likelihood it would fuel resentment at bankers on a large scale. Today I want to look at the different approach we take towards serious error in the public and private sectors.

- 7. Exclusive: the NHS report that Labour tried to block » Spectator Blogs
It emerged this morning that Labour MPs took the extraordinary step of blocking the publication of the Health Select Committee report into the NHS – because the conclusions backed up government reforms. I have just been handed details of this report, and it’s clear why Labour wanted it suppressed: it contradicts the party’s attack message. Here are the main points:

- 9. When I criticised the NHS, my elderly mother was harassed – which helps explain the mess...
Three years ago, at the very moment that he was presiding over the abominations at Mid Staffs – and, as we now know, several other hospitals – Andy Burnham, then Health Secretary, was calling me ‘unpatriotic’ for pointing out the poor performance of the NHS in international league tables.I mention it, not to have a go at the poor fellow – the rest of the country is already doing that – but to explore the connection between the tendency to shout down any criticism of the NHS and the number of British hospitals which are, as the Keogh Report put it, ‘trapped in mediocrity’. Any organisation that is treated as being beyond reproach is bound in time to become flabby, self-serving and producer-centred. It happened to the mega-charities. It happened to the United Nations. It would be surprising if the NHS were an exception.

- 11. Time to get real about NHS costs | Vanessa Feltz | Columnists | Comment | Daily Express
SHOULD we have to pay towards our NHS treatment?” I asked a top London GP. “of course”, he replied, “but it’ll never happen. No government would risk the unpopularity of trying to drive such a policy through. It would mean annihilation in any election. What’s more the very notion of parting with so much as a penny for what we all think should be free at the point of service goes so profoundly against the grain, people would take to the streets and riot.”Senior doctors are insisting the current level of care provided gratis on the NhS is unsustainable. Their solution is to draw up a list of “core” services. Anything on the core list would be free. Anything deemed less than essential would be charged for. of course the list doesn’t yet exist, so there’s no knowing if blood tests, ultrasound scans, pregnancy tests, condoms, breakfast, lunch and dinner and bed baths would be considered “core” or chargeable.

- 14. Keogh review: 11 NHS hospitals to be placed in special measures as Jeremy Hunt reveals thousands of patients needlessly died
Labour faced its ‘darkest moment’ yesterday over its stewardship of the Health Service as a devastating report laid bare an appalling catalogue of failings at 11 hospitals where ‘thousands’ of patients needlessly died.Voters are told that Labour is the only party in whose hands the NHS is safe, but David Cameron and Jeremy Hunt said the study proved the opposite to be true.Labour had presided, they said, over a culture of ‘cover-up’ where targets were more important than people and ministers’ reputations more important than care.A damning review by the NHS medical director, Sir Bruce Keogh, into 14 hospitals with higher-than-expected death rates found that all had ‘ingredients’ of Mid Staffs, the hospital where up to 1,200 died on filthy wards.
