481. May she defend our laws and ever give us cause… – Telegraph Blogs
As Queen Elizabeth celebrates 60 years on the throne, it is instructive to glance at the changes that have taken place on our doorstep.Spain has gone from being a fascist dictatorship via an absolute monarchy to a parliamentary monarchy, with a failed military coup in 1981 and perennial republican agitationGreece, a monarchy until 1974, experienced seven years of dictatorship under the Colonels after 1967, followed by an abortive naval mutiny, the proclamation of a republic, a brief phase of multi-party democracy and, last year, the suspension of that democracy in a Brussels-backed coup

483. David Cameron is love-bombed by the US liberal media – Telegraph Blogs
The state visit to this country by President Obama has prompted American opinion formers to cast a critical eye over David Cameron and his government – and they like what they see. The New York Times’s David Brooks is positively gushing, favourably contrasting the political maturity of this country with what is happening back home. This is his take on Cameron:

484. Ashton and Van Rompuy fly to the same meeting in separate private jets, gilded princelings of...
I doubt this is what Guy Verhofstadt had in mind when he suggested that Britain save money by allowing the EU to take over its foreign policy. It turns out that Herman Van Rompuy and Baroness Ashton travelled in two separate private jets to the same meeting in Russia. Their flights left Brussels within four hours of each other, both with plenty of empty seats.

486. The Today programme forgets to ask Nick Clegg about the euro. How odd… – Telegraph...
As Holmes told Watson long ago, it is often the fact that the dog did not bark which tells us something important. So it was with the Nick Clegg interview on the Today programme on Thursday. Naturally enough, the interviewer spent more time on what, when and who the Prime Minister told his deputy about the famous "veto" at the December meeting of the EU Council than anything else. That gave Mr Clegg plenty of time to drag out the familiar old chestnut about the three million British jobs put at risk should the United Kingdom become once again a self-governing nation. This time, however, Mr Clegg went further – asserting, without contradiction or question, that those jobs would be "at risk" unless Mr Cameron got back to the "top table". Mere membership of the EU, it seems, is no longer enough to ensure access to its markets. That, however, was not the most remarkable feature of the interview. That was the unspoken agreement between Mr Clegg and the Today interviewer that neither of them would utter the word "euro".Odd, wasn't it? That Council meeting was all about the euro. The biggest threat to the jobs of British workers is the economic shambles in our markets caused by the euro.

487. Cameron's veto is the first step towards a new relationship with our fellow Europeans –...
At last! When all other options had been exhausted, David Cameron has done the right thing. By refusing to sign up to changes in the Treaty of Rome (which is now, after amendments, really the Treaty of Lisbon) the Prime Minister has adopted the policy which, in a conversation with Giscard d'Estaing, I described as “getting the British dog out of the European federal manger”.

488. San Francisco goldfish ban exposes the pathology of America's bourgeois liberal nutjobs –...
In many European minds, America is run by religious fundamentalists and moustache-twirling defence contractors. So, for the sake of balance, it is good to be reminded that there are some real liberal nutjobs living out there too. And you won’t find a more liberal or nuttier city than San Francisco. The San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission has proposed a ban on the sale of goldfish. It says that it wants to discourage “impulse buys” and the farming of tropical species. Pet store owners say the proposal is “stupid”.

489. Greenpeace: give me a child until he is seven… – Telegraph Blogs
Have you seen the latest Greenpeace propaganda campaign? Here it is, above: have a glance and see whether you agree with me that the whole business stinks to high heaven. The second most objectionable part of it is its noisome premise. Volkswagen makes cars not organic tofu ice cream. It is an entirely reasonable position for VW to campaign against CO2 emissions legislation, not least because – as most of us here know – the threat posed by CO2 exists solely in the realm of theory and carbon legislation will do nothing except damage to Europe’s already fragile markets

490. Australia counts the cost of environmental lunacy – and plots its sweet revenge –...
Gosh I’m looking forward to visiting Australia later this year. And the reason I’m so excited – apart from the fact that I’ve never been before to the Land of the Taipan, the Sydney Funnel Web, the Box Jellyfish, the Saltwater Crocodile, and the Great White Shark – is that I know I’m going to be given a hero’s welcome.

493. It's time to leave the EU – Telegraph Blogs
So said a the audience at a packed debate in the Royal Geographical Society, by 470 to 116. I had proposed the motion alongside Christopher Booker and Frederick Forsyth. Opposing it were Denis MacShane, Philip Souta and Richard Laming of the European Movement (Charles Kennedy pulled out at the last minute). My Euro-enthusiast readers will no doubt say, 'Yeah, yeah, so what does that prove? That a bunch of tweed-wearing Spectator readers don't like the EU? I could have told you that for nothing'.It's true that the debate was organised by the Speccie. It doesn't follow, though, that its audience was unrepresentative, at least not on the issue of the EU.

494. Jos̩ Manuel Barroso sends us the bill for propping up the euro РTelegraph Blogs
José Manuel Barroso plans to solve the euro crisis with more debt, more spending, more intervention, more integration – more, indeed, of all the things that created the mess in the first place. Alright, you might say, but that's his problem. If the eurozone wants to self-harm, who are we to stop it?

495. Leaving the euro is remarkably straightforward – Telegraph Blogs
As it becomes clear that the euro is a recessionary device, its supporters are playing their last card: leaving, they say, would be impractical. No longer do they try to claim that staying in is beneficial: everyone can see that it isn't. Instead, they are giving us the old cure-would-be-worse-than-the-disease shtick. A return to national currencies, they tell us, would be so complicated and expensive as to be unfeasible.

496. The lobbying strength of big business is puny compared to that of the global NGOs –...
It's hard not to admire George Monbiot for publishing all his earnings. As he says, journalists often have a giving-it-out-but-not-taking-it problem. I know a columnist, for example, who often writes that Britain needs to export more weapons, but who has never, to my knowledge, divulged that he goes shooting at the expense of a prominent arms dealer. This doesn't stop him dismissing MPs as uniquely venal and corrupt.
