465. Germany's constitutional court weighs the legality of the bailouts – Telegraph Blogs
Germany’s federal constitutional court will today consider the legitimacy of the eurozone bailouts. The case has been brought by a coalition of concerned citizens, including a number of eminent economists, a leading law professor and a CSU MP.Let me give the judges a hint. All they have to do is look at Article 125 of the Treaty:

466. Euro crisis: Britain got it right, and is consequently less influential than ever –...
Being a British Eurosceptic in Brussels means spending a great deal of time being patronized by not-terribly-bright people. I’ve lost count of how many times a Euro-integrationist MEP has tried to put me right, adopting the tone one would take with a recalcitrant six-year-old. The conversations usually end with the federalist delivering some utter banality along the lines of “If you are not present at the table, you cannot be part of the discussion!” and then wandering off with a delighted grin, convinced he has won the argument.

467. Ed Miliband is still in denial about Labour's spending binge - LeftWatch
By Jonathan Isaby Labour leader Ed MIliband has written a piece behind the Times' paywall today that he has now helpfully reproduced on his own website. He accuses the Government of propagating "a great deceit designed to damage Labour" over his party's handling of the economy: What is this deceit? It is that the deficit was caused by chronic overspending rather than a...

469. Cameron and Osborne are giving public schoolboys a bad name – Telegraph Blogs
“The problem is that policy is being run by two public school boys who don’t know what it’s like to go to the supermarket and have to put things back on the shelves because they can’t afford it for their children’s lunchboxes. What’s worse, they don’t care either.”If this quote came from Vince Cable it could safely be dismissed as the peevish mutterings of a typical Lib Dem malcontent doing his damnedest to tar the Conservatives as a party for the spoiled, remote, arrogant rich. But it doesn't come from Cable, it comes from truest of blue Tory backbenchers Nadine Dorries. And Dorries is absolutely right

470. Ten Questions to Ed Miliband about phone hacking and Tom Baldwin - LeftWatch
By Tim Montgomerie Follow Tim on Twitter. (1) Why did Ed Miliband’s office send out an email to his top team in February 2011 (written by Tom Baldwin himself) saying “BSkyB bid and phone-tapping . . . these issues should not be linked”, yet today he is doing precisely that? (More at the New Statesman). (2) Having decided to attend Rupert Murdoch’s summer party only a few...

471. European integration does nothing for peace – Telegraph Blogs
Happy Europe Day. Or is it 'Merry Europe Day'? I always forget. No doubt most readers will be spending the day in prayer and fasting, but here in Brussels we're being treated to a series of receptions, parades and wince-making songs sung by children. In the chamber just now, speaker after speaker stood up to deliver the solemn clichés that the occasion demands.

472. A cautionary tale from George I, King of the Hellenes – Telegraph Blogs
EU leaders are still, hilariously, claiming that Greece will avoid a default and meet its obligations. Greek political leaders, with equal comedic genius, insist that they really are going to raise revenue and cut spending. Here's a little story about Greek politicians which I came across in an old biography of the Duke of Edinburgh.Shortly after George I – Prince Philip's grandfather – had ascended to the Hellenic throne, he called a Cabinet meeting. Around the table were the patriarchs of Greek politics, men whose surnames still dominate contemporary administrations. During the discussion, the young monarch rose from the table in order to illustrate his point on a wall map. When he returned to his chair, his gold fountain pen was missing.

473. Free speech is in retreat throughout the West – Telegraph Blogs
There's a sizzling piece by Mark Steyn in the current issue of National Review, which reveals quite how far democracies have gone in restricting free speech.Citing, among many, the example of a musician on the Isle of Wight who was charged with racism after performing Kung Fu Fighting in the hearing of a Chinese couple, he makes the point that it is no longer possible to infer the legal status of words from the words themselves:“There were funky Chinamen from funky Chinatown” is legal or illegal according to whosoever happens to hear it. Indeed, in my very favorite example of this kind of thinking,

474. The two most Eurosceptic speeches came – mirabile dictu – from MEPs –...
The two most anti-Brussels podium speeches were delivered by Euro-MPs. Now there's a sentence that couldn't have been written at any of the past 50 Conservative conferences. The first came from that flinty and patriotic Geordie, Martin Callanan, who tore into the EU's plans for fiscal federalism, demanded a broad repatriation of powers and promised that his MEPs would never support a penny of extra spending by Brussels. The second came from Jan Zahradil, leader of our trans-national alliance, the European Conservatives and Reformists, who was cheered as he told delegates that they had been right all along, and that the Tories spoke for millions of unconsulted Europeans who had been failed by their own elites. European integration, he declared, was the problem, not the solution.

475. Is the survival of the euro in Britain's interest? – Telegraph Blogs
Not necessarily. The prosperity of the eurozone plainly is in our interests: it absorbs around 40 per cent of our exports, and comprises countries which are our friends and allies. But the survival of the euro and the prosperity of its constituent nations are two very different things.True, the break-up of the euro would involve costs. But it's becoming obvious that the costs involved in holding it together are much higher

476. Ludwig von Mises on the financial crisis – and the calamitous response to it –...
Ludwig von Mises isn't an easy read. His early works are in German, and his later books, though written in English, read like ponderous translations from his mother tongue. He has an unnerving tendency to swerve from dense, technical prose to furious polemic. He was, by all accounts, a difficult and rebarbative colleague.

477. Tories, Tea Partiers, Nazis: Chris Huhne lashes out at the forces of evil – Telegraph...
When he lays into the 'Tory Tea Party tendency', I'm guessing that Chris Huhne means me. I am, as far as I know, the only elected Conservative actually to have organised a Tea Party – that is, an anti-tax rally (see here). Not that the Environment Secretary seems to have our views about tax in mind. Rather, he is using 'Tea Partiers' in the sense that most British Lefties do, to mean 'horrid people'. The Environment Secretary usually claims that his opponents are like Nazis. This time, though, he's taking off the gloves. Never mind Adolf Hitler; these Right-wing Tories are like… like… Sarah Palin!

478. How many people would support the 50p top rate tax even if they believed it was shrinking our...
Here's the question I'd like to see someone put to Nick Clegg: 'If you were presented with incontrovertible proof that wealth taxes were, on balance, costing the Treasury money, would you still support them?'The Deputy PM would, of course, dispute the basis of the question. He'd insist that wealth taxes do bring in net revenue, and I'm sure he'd be sincere: it's human nature to believe the facts which best match our assumptions. I might point to several surveys showing that wealth taxes in general, and the 50p rate in particular, drive away more revenue than they raise. But he might retort that I am subject to a cognitive dissonace of my own.

479. Nick Clegg's sulk makes David Cameron's EU 'no' look even better – Telegraph Blogs
David Cameron consolidated Friday's success with a statement that eschewed gloating in favour of a rehearsal of the facts of the past few days. He responded to France and Germany in good faith, he said, the implication being that they did not reciprocate. Saying no wasn't easy – it was not without risks – but it was the right thing to do.

480. Fakegate – Telegraph Blogs
I wasn't going to write about yesterday's Heartland Institute shock-horror revelations in the Guardian because I thought it was a non-story. "Independent libertarian think-tank spends trifling* sums of money to counter the state's liberal-left propaganda". Gosh, hold the front page. Run it next to the story about the Pope being caught worshipping regularly in Rome and the photograph of a bear pooping behind a tree…Since then, though, it has got much more interesting. Turns out that at least some of the "leaked" documents purporting to show the round, unvarnished face of capitalist, anti-science evil may have been faked.
