433. Lying climate scientists lie again – about death threats, this time – Telegraph...
There's a great scoop in The Australian today about more lying climate scientists making stuff up.CLAIMS that some of Australia's leading climate change scientists were subjected to death threats as part of a vicious and unrelenting email campaign have been debunked by the Privacy Commissioner.Timothy Pilgrim was called in to adjudicate on a Freedom of Information application in relation to Fairfax and ABC reports last June alleging that Australian National University climate change researchers were facing the ongoing campaign and had been moved to "more secure buildings" following explicit threats.Needless to say the University did everything it could to prevent the investigation, arguing that the release of the climate scientists' emails (why am I getting an eerie sense of deja vu here?) "would or could reasonably be expected to…endanger the life or physical safety of any person". But doughty Sydney blogger Simon Turnill appealed against this stonewalling drivel and won. And here's what was revealed when the 11 relevant emails were eventually released.Ten of the documents "did not contain threats to kill or threats of harm."Of the 11th, the Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim said: "I consider the danger to life or physical safety in this case to be only a possibility, not a real chance."No wonder the university was so keen to keep things quiet. Contrary to the claims of the "climate" "scientists" – widely reported, of course, in the left-wing media – there had been no death threats whatsoever. Yet their vice-chancellor at the time – now the Australian government's Chief Scientist – Professor Ian Chubb decided to move them to "more secure buildings" without, he now admits, having read the emails to see whether these threats actually existed.

434. Even as it drags them under, Greeks cling to the euro – Telegraph Blogs
The markets are now, according to some calculations, pricing in a 75 per cent likelihood of Greece leaving the euro. Most analysts have been of this opinion for at least a year. I've so far resisted the consensus, but I'm beginning to feel the tiniest twinges of doubt.Eurocrats who as recently as last week were committed to the survival of the euro in its present form are privately in despair. As Israeli officials used to say of the Palestinians, they find they have no one on the other side to negotiate with. Most Greeks have voted for parties which are committed to ending the loans-for-austerity deal with Brussels – though they cheerfully insist that they intend to remain in the euro.

435. Now even Pravda admits the 'global warming' jig is up – Telegraph Blogs
It's Death of Little Nell time again in the field of climate "science." The New York Times – aka Pravda – has announced the closure of its Environment Desk. Rumours that the entire environment team, headed by Andy Revkin, have volunteered to be recycled into compost and spread on the lawn of the new billion dollar home Al Gore bought with the proceeds of his sale of Current TV to Middle Eastern oil interests are as yet unconfirmed. What we do know is that it's very, very sad and that all over the Arctic baby polar bears are weeping bitter tears of regret.

436. We are doomed – doomed! – Telegraph Blogs
Some readers feel I'm laying it on a bit thick about our debt levels. Well, have a look at the charts below, which come from the Bank of International Settlement (hat-tip, Tim Clougherty). Let's start with the three forms of debt in Britain, viz personal, corporate and government liabilities:There comes a point when the a country's overall indebtedness begins significantly to reduce its growth. The Bank of International Settlement tells us what this point is: around 90 per cent of GDP for government and corporate debt, 85 per cent for household debt. Now here's the bad news. In Britain, government debt is 89 per cent of GDP, company debt 126 per cent and household debt 106 per cent. We are, in other words, in a downward spiral: as growth slows, debt increases.

437. The EU has failed. Who are the truly guilty men? – Telegraph Blogs
Being intellectually wrong isn’t the same as being morally wrong. It’s a distinction that is often forgotten in politics, where we habitually dismiss our opponents as liars, blackguards and fiends. Convinced that our opinions are based on demonstrable facts, we easily slip into assuming that the person who disagrees – the person who refuses to see reality as we do – must have some unstated motive. We can’t help it. The tendency to take short-cuts, to press new information into our existing world-view, is encoded in our DNA.

438. Tax avoidance isn't morally wrong. It's perfectly sensible behaviour – Telegraph Blogs
I've been roundly abused on Twitter today by those who believe that tax avoidance is immoral, following the publication of my review of Nicholas Shaxson's book on tax havens in the Mail on Sunday.

439. The Battle of Hastings, as told by Chris Bryant Left Watch
Following the gripping instalment from Chris Bryant's diary in today's Independent, ConHome presents an earlier extract, during his previous incarnation as King Harold the Second: Sunday, 11.15pm I'm told some Norman immigrants have landed near Hastings, probably with the intention of taking my job. 441. Is Iran now more liberal than Saudi Arabia? Do we need to change allies? – Telegraph Blogs
In Davos, Hassan Rouhani is mounting a formidable charm offensive. Ambrose Evans-Pritchard reckons that "the 30-year US vendetta with Iran is over in all but name".This prompts a wider question. Are we about to see a radical realignment of the West's relations in the Middle East? Or, more specifically, are the United States – and possibly Britain – about to recalibrate their relationships with various regional players?

442. To Prince Philip, Barack Obama's bomb-proof Cadillac probably seems like something out of Star...
Once again the Duke of Edinburgh shows himself to be a master of the one-liner. People on Twitter are saying that he extemporized one of his famous quips as the Obamas disembarked from their eight-ton, bomb-proof Cadillac limousine. This is the “Beast” you may have read about: it has eight-inch-thick doors, oxygen tanks, hidden submachine guns, tear-gas cannons, Kevlar-reinforced run-flat tyres and glass that can withstand armour-piercing bullets. It must seem like something out of Star Trek to Prince Philip, so no wonder (it’s said) he waved in the direction of the car and said: “You survived.” Mrs Obama seems to have got the joke; apparently she was tittering.

444. George Galloway and the rise of sectarian politics – Telegraph Blogs
Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability. It is hard not to feel a batsqueak of admiration for George Galloway. Most British people like to see mavericks beating the system, and Gorgeous George has smarmed his way through personal, political and financial crises that would have brought down almost any other public figure. His self-belief is like some inexorable force of nature. It is none the less depressing to watch him creating identity politics in Great Britain. When candidates seek office by growing beards, proclaiming their dislike of alcohol, ostentatiously adopting Muslim phraseology and focusing almost wholly on foreign policy, they do little to encourage national cohesion.I have seen confessional and ethnic politics at work around Europe. In little pockets across the Continent, parties have sprung up to represent linguistic minorities and irredenti communities. They are always complacent and frequently corrupt, for nothing is more deleterious to democratic engagement than the belief that you have to vote for ‘your’ party. Candidates take voters for granted; voters stop caring about manifestos.

445. Queensland turns the tide of environmental lunacy – Telegraph Blogs
Just a fortnight, now, before I fly to God's Own Country to promote Killing The Earth To Save It (Connor Court) and tell the Aussies some home truths about the great global warming swindle. But do you know what? I think, to judge by the Queensland election results, one or two of them might have twigged already. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that those Queenslanders have just won the climate war equivalent of El Alamein. (H/T Bob Carter, Stefan Bjorklund, Sonya Porter, Mark Hatherly)

446. This isn't a carnival, it's a police state – Telegraph Blogs
Next weekend, I shall be living in a police state. There will be policemen at either end of my little street, policemen on duty outside my local pub, policemen guarding the entrance to the supermarket. If I go to the shops and plan to return to my flat by anything other than the circuitous “official” route, I’ll have to show my local residents’ ID to one of the 5,000 police officers patrolling the neighbourhood. You see, I live in Notting Hill and it’s Carnival time again.

447. Labour Co-Op MPs slam zero hours contracts...while their own donor uses them | Left Watch
Evidently the news has gone out today from Labour HQ that it's time Opposition MPs did something over the summer recess. The topic of choice is zero-hours contracts and, lo and behold, flurries of Labour MPs have been tweeting away.I've picked out the four tweeting MPs above for a reason. As well as dutifully obeying the orders of the day, they have something else in common - each is a Labour & Co-operative Party MP.One of the major employers caught up in the zero hours row that they are stoking is Co-Operative Funeralcare, part of the Co-Operative Group, aka the people who fund the Co-Op Party.

448. This 'modernising' government is turning the clock back – to the violence and illiteracy...
Very often when I raise my head and mutter, or even shout, that things were arranged better in my young days, I am told that "You can't turn the clock back." It is a way of closing down the discussion. There is then no need to consider whether or not things were better. You just can't put the clock back, so that is that. Francis Maude was at it yesterday, seeking to prevent any discussion of whether or not Conservatives should be in favour of changing the definition of marriage, which has served us across so many cultures and religions so well for so long.
