385. Lying Lefties, gruesome polyester chasubles and Dave's bedtime Belgian buns – Telegraph...
Crusading Left-wing journalists thought the internet was going to be their friend, enabling them to broadcast the evils of capitalism to a new audience. But things haven’t gone quite to plan. Instead, the web has thrown a spotlight on liberal hacks indulging in a habit that they just can’t kick, however hard they try.I refer, of course, to making stuff up. With the best of intentions, naturally.

386. Shapps warns councils "may well not be rewarded" for Council Tax rises | Local Government
A warning from Housing Minister Grant Shapps on the Radio 4 Today programme to councils turning down the offer of funding for a Council Tax freeze this year because they thought it would make it easier for them to dodge a referendum next year.

387. Could Tony Blair come back to UK politics in an elected House of Lords? – Telegraph Blogs
That headline is not designed to be a Question to Which The Answer Is No. I really do wonder if an elected House of Lords will provide Blair with a way to get back into British politics.Blair is feeling very restless. The former Labour leader is, friends say, feeling aggrieved that so many of his fellow Britons think that he is now hardly ever here. The perception is that he is only interested in the money-making opportunities, sorry I mean policy challenges, in countries overseas. He has even hired a communications advisor to help him "re-engage" with the UK. That is classic Blair. Rather than hiring a spin-doctor to re-engage, why not just re-engage?

388. Exam board insists A-level Politics students give left-wing answers Left Watch
The left wing leanings of parts of the educational establishment have long been obvious - and plenty more have been drawn out by the hysterical opposition to Michael Gove's Free School reforms. The nature of the politics curriculum itself hasn't yet been explored, though. Today, the Telegraph features a must-read piece by 18-year-old A-level...

389. Vocational education report author rejects Miliband's anti-Government attacks Left Watch
Ed Miliband has decided to make vocational education a key part of his conference speech this afternoon, judging by the coverage in the press this morning. He is attacking the Government, ostensibly for not doing enough to provide vocational opportunities to students - despite the fact the Government is taking action on the issue.Professor Wolf, a respected economist, has now released a statement which refutes Miliband's partisan attack, by praising Michael Gove's implementation of her report, and welcoming Miliband to the "emerging consensus" on education:

391. Britain Unleashed: ten ideas to revive our economy – Telegraph Blogs
1. Make taxes lower, simpler and flatter. Every minute spent wrestling with a tax return is a minute taken off work. Every penny spent on accountants' fees is a penny passed on to customers. The current system suits the super-rich, whose experts are adept at finding its folds and pockets; but it’s a disaster for small and medium businesses.2. Stop printing money. Two years of high inflation have served to disincentivise work while doing nothing to make credit more available. Savers and pensioners have been punished, productivity damaged and competitiveness eroded to no good end.3. Respect free contract. If I want to work for you, and you want to employ me, and we’re both happy with the terms and conditions, the government ought not to come between us and pronounce our arrangement illegal. This ought to be a basic principle in an open society, but its implications are colossal.

392. Only in America….. – Telegraph Blogs
(H/T Maltesertoo – who posted the litany below, for which I take no credit, in comments. It's proving so popular I think it deserves a wider circulation.)1) Only in America could the President talkabout the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund-raising event.2) Only in America could people claim that the government stilldiscriminates against black Americans when we have a black President, ablack Attorney General, and roughly 18% of the federal work force is blackwhile 12% of the population is black.3) Only in America could we have had the two people most responsiblefor our tax code, Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury Departmentand Charles Rangel who once ran the Ways and Means Committee, BOTH turn outto be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.

393. Rick Santorum is a big government conservative. He'd be a disaster in the White House –...
I'm trying to think of good reasons why Rick Santorum did so well in the Iowa caucus, only losing to Romney by 8 votes. So far all I can come up with is:1. He's not Mitt Romney.2. He's not Newt Gingrich.3. Iowans feel more intellectual voting for the only candidate with a surname which sounds like a Latin genitive plural.4. They're cussed, flinty, independent-minded folk those Iowans and aren't going to let small details like electability get in the way of their decision-making.5. Santorum put a lot of energy into sucking up to Iowans and anyway he's the kind of old school, bible-bashing social conservative that they like. What this doesn't mean, though, is that we're going to end up with President Santorum. Or, if we do, it will be a disaster. As Michael Tanner notes at NRO, Santorum is the very opposite of what the US wants or needs right now. He's a big government conservative.

394. Mitt Romney and David Cameron: conservatives who won't defend conservatism – Telegraph...
Is any of the GOP presidential candidates actually capable of standing up for small government, liberty and free market capitalism? You'd have thought that celebrating these values would be an essential part of their job. But not, apparently, if you're so desperate to beat Mitt Romney you'd sell your every last ideological principle down the river.

395. Why I owe Aussie QC Raymond Finkelstein a pint – Telegraph Blogs
Today's column is dedicated to Raymond Finkelstein QC. Raymond who? Well, he's the kind of left-leaning activist lawyer I'd normally run a mile from – especially since he's behind a scary new report which, if implemented, will kill what's left of freedom of speech in Australia and pretty much criminalise climate scepticism. (H/T John O'Sullivan; Peter Dun)But as far as I'm concerned, the man's a total bloody hero and when I come to Oz in mid-April I'd like to buy him a pint. Why? Because thanks to good old Raymond I'm going to sell loads more copies of my book Killing The Earth To Save It: How Environmentalists are Ruining the Planet, Destroying the Economy and Stealing Your Jobs (Connor Court).

396. The knives were out for Osborne – but he rescued his reputation – Telegraph Blogs
Ed Balls tells the story of a recent Labour focus group that was asked what it thought of George Osborne. One man replied: “George Osborne? Was he the one crawling around dressed in a pink catsuit?” The Chancellor has the hide of a rhinoceros, but even he would balk at being mistaken for George Galloway. Yes, he sometimes gives the impression of relishing his unpopularity, on the principle that if he isn’t hated he isn’t doing his job properly. But he would rather people loathed him than confused him with someone else. To those tempted to commiserate, he says he always expected to be reviled in office because of what he had to do, which might explain the rueful smile when he was booed by 65,000 people at the Paralympics.

397. 'Printing money is the last resort of desperate governments when all other policies have failed'...
So said George Osborne in January 2009, and he was absolutely right. Inflation rewards fecklessness, punishes thrift, disincentivises work and weakens the competitiveness of the entire economy.George did admit one exception. Quantitative easing, he allowed, 'can’t be ruled out as a last resort in the fight against deflation'. One might debate that proposition in the abstract but, in practical terms, it is utterly irrelevant. There is no danger of deflation in Britain. On the contrary, prices are rising alarmingly.

398. Entrepreneurs still on strike
Mr Brown left the Coalition government a nasty posion pill. He put Income tax (and NI) up to 52% on top rate payers, and he raised National Insurance, the tax on jobs. The incoming goverment moved a little to take some of the sting out of the NI, but left the high top rate of Income Tax in place. They then added to the problem by raising Mr Brown’s very competitive 18% rate of Capital Gains Tax to 28%.

399. Luvvies for hypocrisy, intellectual dishonesty and lazy groupthink – Telegraph Blogs
The story so far: Caitlin Moran (yes, all right: I know lots of you claim never to have heard of her, but she's a bestselling author on both sides of the Atlantic and one of our most fluent and entertaining columnists) has been fighting a war to clean up the social media site you never use, Twitter. But now she has been rumbled as a major source of offensive, potty-mouthed, insensitive Twitter chat herself. And now, in response, Caitlin has felt compelled to launch into one of her increasingly tedious apologiae pro vita sua (Caitlin, Caitlin, you were SO much more fun in the days when you stuck to celebrities and vajazzling) to justify why, like, it's OK for Caitlin Moran to make flip, glib, matey in-jokes about AIDs and gay…

400. How the pro-choice Today programme distorted Lansley's inquiry into the abuse of the Abortion Act | Telegraph Blogs
The Today programme obviously reckons it is the highest authority in the land – the Supreme Court, Government and General Synod all in one. Today sets the agenda and the priorities – and woe betide any hapless minister who dares challenge their liberal orthodoxy. That orthodoxy rates abortion on demand up there with FairTrade Coffee and Boardroom Quotas. So when Andrew Lansley had the temerity to order the CQC investigation into what this paper had exposed as the grotesque and potentially illegal abuse of the 1967 abortion law, he had a fight on his hands. Today attacked him for politicising the issue – why the urgency? Why waste a whole million pounds and 'cancel' inspections into care homes?
