369. Should the Conservative party lurch right or left?
There will be all manner of calls in the next few days for a change of direction by Conservative Ministers, in the wake of the big swings to Labour in the local elections. The main feature of the elections was a swing to the left as conventionally described. Labour took many votes off the Lib Dems, and some votes off the Conservatives. It extended its hold on many northern towns and cities, and showed an ability to win some seats in the south as well.

I’m just back from France, looking like a beetroot and stinking of wine. Aside from its most famous produce, and the food, weather and beautiful language, another thing we all like about France is that it is just so empty. As soon as you reach Kent (“garden of England” – the biggest PR job since…

371. The other anniversary – Telegraph Blogs
As the world stared in horror at the ruin of the twin towers, few noticed what would, in normal times, have been Britain's top news story. The Conservatives had elected a new leader, the former Maastricht rebel, Iain Duncan Smith. The party delayed the announcement for 24 hours in deference to the trauma of our American allies; when the declaration was formally made on September 12 2001, the country's attention was still focused on New York and Washington.

372. The New York Times takes down the Clinton Foundation. This could be devastating for Bill and Hillary
Is the New York Times being guest edited by Rush Limbaugh? Today it runs with a fascinating takedown of the Clinton Foundation – that vast vanity project that conservatives are wary of criticising for being seen to attack a body that tries to do good. But the liberal NYT has no such scruples. The killer quote is this:For all of its successes, the Clinton Foundation had become a sprawling concern, supervised by a rotating board of old Clinton hands, vulnerable to distraction and threatened by conflicts of interest. It ran multimillion-dollar deficits for several years, despite vast amounts of money flowing in.Over a year ago Bill Clinton met with some aides and lawyers to review the Foundation's progress and concluded that it was a mess.

373. Sean Penn should return his Malibu estate to the Mexicans – Telegraph Blogs
I’d like to make a statement about the growing crisis in the Americas. It’s time for justice. It’s time for liberty. It’s time to end the ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology. It’s time Sean Penn handed his Malibu estate back to the Mexicans.Sean Penn pretends to be a friend of the developing world, but really he is not.

374. Plain packaging is a bad idea because it's a bad idea - not just because Lynton Crosby...
I was listening to the BBC yesterday – why do so many of my angriest blogposts begin this way? – to a Radio 4 File On 4 investigation into the "tobacco lobby" and "plain packaging."We know why the BBC ran this story, of course. For party political reasons. Labour – the BBC's most natural ideological soulmate – is currently trying to do a smear job on the Conservatives' campaign strategist Lynton Crosby. Because his firm also does campaign work for the tobacco industry, Ed Miliband and co are striving somewhat desperately to pin the recent government decision to shelve "plain packaging" for cigarettes on Crosby's sinister influence.Amazingly – as we saw again in today's PMQs – Labour honestly think this crap story has legs. And one of the main reasons Labour nurture this delusion is because of the way it has been enthusiastically bigged up by their amen corner at the Observer, the Guardian, the Independent and the BBC none of whom appear to have bothered asking themselves the basic question which all editors really ought to ask before running a story:

375. Left Watch | Conservative Home
By Tim Montgomerie Follow Tim on Twitter. Over at the New Statesman I'm described as an "economic neanderthal" by the left-wing economist David Blanchflower. My experience is that people usually resort to abuse when they're losing an argument and Blanchflower has been the leading champion of the Ed Balls view that Britain should carry on adding to its debt as if there's...

376. How many died in the great Blackpool earthquake of '11? – Telegraph Blogs
….Exactly same number of people killed in the terrible nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island, funnily enough. And with just the same result: masses of manufactured green outrage; demand by a highly vocal minority of anti-capitalist activists (Eg that living argument for never sending a boy to Westminster, Huhne C) that still more extravagant precautionary measures be adopted to ensure that producing energy is even more costly and difficult than it was before. (H/T GWPF)As I've argued elsewhere, shale gas is our lifeline at one of the darkest hours in our economic history. One day, David Cameron may finally come round to appreciating that not offending your more obstreperous Coalition partners is slightly less important an issue than not bankrupting your economy. By that stage, though, unfortunately, it may already be too late.

Today I am in New York on my publicity tour for Watermelons and as I sat at breakfast this morning, chomping on an Ess-a-bagel and reading Thomas Sowell’s Basic Economics I found myself wondering – not for the first time – why it is that liberal-lefties manage to be so utterly wrong about everything.“Because they’re stupid,” said a libertarian friend of mine.

379. Another, even better letter to the Bishop of Exeter on the subject of wind farms –...
Last week I wrote a letter to the Bishop of Exeter on the subject of his foiled plan to plonk half a dozen bat-chomping, bird-slicing eco crucifixes on church land in three pretty North Devon villages. This letter from Rupert Wyndham – reproduced by Jo Nova – is even better. (H/T Ian Wilson). Here it is:14 June 2012Rt. Rev. Michael LangrishBishop of ExeterThe Bishop’s OfficeThe PalaceExeter, UKDear Bishop Langrish,Earlier in the week I listened to what you had to say following the welcome decision to withdraw the diocese’s application to erect wind turbines in Devon. 380. 'Imagine there's no shale gas' - Telegraph Blogs
As Yoko Ono's not-nearly-as-famous-or-talented late husband once almost wrote:"Imagine there's no frackingIt isn't hard to do.No jobs or cheap energyThe world economy in the poo…."So how good John Lennon must be feeling right now as he looks down from his heavenly cloud to observe his caterwauling beloved and their ubertalented progeny Sean Ono Lennon carrying on the fight against the Evil Cheap And Abundant Energy Menace They Call Shale Gas. The bit John will feel specially proud of, I imagine, is the one where Sean Ono (who describes himself as a "hippie" who "doesn't condone violence") Tweets lovingly to one of his pro-shale-gas critics "You are an argument for abortion."

381. Nicholas Stern - the most dangerous man you've never heard of – Telegraph Blogs
Ask almost anyone who Nicholas Stern is and you'd surely draw a blank. But as Andrew Montford suggests at his Bishop Hill blog, there are few men who have had quite such a deleterious effect on our lives as this dreary ex-civil servant now known – to those few who do know of him – as Lord Stern and doing very nicely thank you at his extremely well-paid job fomenting climate alarmist drivel at the Grantham Institute.Says Montford (and gosh how it does the heart good to see this mild-mannered fellow getting so righteously, viciously angry!)Nicholas Stern is to blame. When you see wind farms covering every hill and mountain and most of the valleys too, you can blame Stern. If you can't pay your heating bills, ask Stern why this has happened.

382. The state is failing its duties. The British people will soon run out of patience –...
There have been a couple of erudite reports recently that no doubt cost a great deal of money to produce, and came to rather similar conclusions. One was looking at the way in which the scale of the disorders and looting escalated, particularly in London this summer; the other at the difficulty in maintaining an atmosphere conducive to teaching in classrooms.

383. UN reveals its master plan for destruction of global economy – Telegraph Blogs
Former US secretary to the United Nations John Bolton once famously said: “The [UN] Secretariat building in New York has 38 stories. If it lost ten stories it wouldn’t make a bit of difference.” (H/T Milo)But I’d say Bolton was being too modest in his aspirations. Far too modest. I’d suggest that if we lost all 38 stories the benefits to mankind would be almost incalculable. Right now, indeed, it’s likely that the United Nations poses a far greater threat to Western Civilisation and the world’s economic future than Al Qaeda does

384. There has been no global warming since 1998 – Telegraph Blogs
The headline of this post really shouldn’t be controversial. It chimes perfectly with what Kevin “null hypothesis” Trenberth wrote in that notorious 2009 Climategate email to Michael Mann:The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.And it’s what Phil Jones admitted in a BBC interview when he said that there had been no “statistically significant” warming since 1995.
