353. Labour councillors denounce Ed Miliband's support for cuts | Local Government
It is not just Labour MPs who rely on the trade unions to fund their election campaigns but also Labour councillors. In return the trade unions have reps on the Local Government Committee of constituency parties which choose council candidates. So it is not surprising that Labour councillors are anxious to toe the union line. So they have been attacking their leader Ed Miliband's support for spending cuts and public sector pay freeze.

354. Big government Conservatives like Nicky Morgan are the problem not the solution –...
With ministers like Nicky Morgan, who needs an opposition? writes m'learned colleague Damian Thompson. A good question, well asked. But that doesn't mean I'm going to resist the opportunity to stick the boot in to this appalling woman I'd never heard of before but who is now right up there with Nick Boles, Oliver Wetwin, Kenneth Clarke, Tim Yeo, Baroness Warsi, Lord Deben, Greg Barker – crikey, I'm going to get RSI typing all the names – on the list of people I hold personally responsible for utterly ruining the Conservative party.

355. Memo to the Duke of Gloucester: royals are supposed to cherish their country, not destroy it...
The other day I had lunch with one of those rare MPs who believes in old-fashioned nonsense like duty, integrity and public service. No, it wasn't Tim Yeo: try again….Anyway, this politician's analysis of what's wrong with contemporary British politics was deeply depressing. The reason the people in Westminster are of such low calibre, he argued, is that they reflect a much broader malaise in the populace at large. Everyone's on the make; everyone feels it's the state's job to bankroll their lifestyle; nobody has any sense of personal responsibility, not even those to whom traditionally at least we have looked for our example.

I do not take kindly to being accused of “organised wickedness” by a wet-behind-the-ears Lib Dem non-achiever. Nor, I think, would my fellow cabinet ministers in a government which won its third election victory with more votes than its first. They were men of the calibre of Peter Carrington, Willie Whitelaw, Nigel Lawson – political giants compared with the underachieving Tim Farron.

357. President Obama's top ten insults against Britain - 2011 edition – Telegraph Blogs
In March last year I published a list of Barack Obama’s biggest insults against America’s biggest ally Great Britain, during his time in office. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since then, including the Gulf oil spill and the White House’s campaign against BP, the now infamous Obama-Sarkozy press conference earlier this year, and the release by Wikileaks of US government documents revealing the Obama administration had betrayed Britain in order to appease the Russians over the New START Treaty.

358. Wind industry big lies no. 2: your property values will not be affected… – Telegraph...
"….And there’s no direct evidence that they affect house prices, in fact the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors says they don’t…."This is a quote – a genuine quote: not one devised by his enemies to satirise the outrageous absurdity of the wind industry's specious claims – from Maf Smith, Deputy Chief of the wind industry propaganda arm RenewableUK.I suppose how far it qualifies as a lie depends on how you construe that weasel phrase "direct evidence." Evidence of one kind or another there certainly is aplenty. Here, for example, is a sad letter I received from a gentleman in Northamptonshire. (I've redacted some details because he doesn't want his case jeopardised).

359. The great wind terror: we name the guilty man – Telegraph Blogs
And it's not David Cameron. Or Sir Reginald Sheffield Bt. Or Mrs Clegg. Or Tim "Trougher" Yeo. Or Lord "Ugh" Deben. Or the noisome Chris Huhne… Though, of course, all have played their part at one time or another in the despoliation of our matchless landscape with view-blighting, fuel-poverty-creating, sleep-denying, sick-making, flood-exascerbating, price-inflating, property-value-trashing, greed-stoking, puke-making, bird-slicing, bat-chomping eco crucifixes…I'm talking about the North London Marxist trustafarian ovoid who was, as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, more responsible than any man or weird egg-creature alive for establishing the framework for Britain's disastrous wind policy. It is nicely summed up by this commenter at the Business Green website:Miliband has huge cheek, opportunistically raising his head at this point as if he is an innocent bystander.

360. Michael Heseltine thinks he is infallible. But he's plain wrong about Churchill and Europe...
I have long known of Michael Heseltine's obsession with Europe, his lack of belief in his own country and his infinite belief in his own infallibility. It drove him to join the conspiracy to destroy Margaret Thatcher's government. But his interview on the Today Programme this morning plumbed new depths of irrationality. The grand climax came with his reminder to us all that Winston Churchill had advocated "a United States of Europe". He didn't continue to remind us that Churchill had added that Britain should not be a part of that USE. I would hesitate to accuse Michael Heseltine of dishonesty. I think that it was a simple demonstration of his capacity for self-delusion. Sadly, the interviewer was either unaware of what Churchill said, or unwilling to break the BBC Europhile concensus, and simply let him get away with it.

362. With Steve Hilton gone, who will talk Tory to David Cameron? – Telegraph Blogs
Steve Hilton, who is taking a leave of absence from No10, is blessed with two small children and a wife who holds a stratospheric job for one of the world's biggest companies. Rachel Whetstone spends one week in three in California in her role as global communications supremo for Google. Her importance to the firm is such that at some point she was going to have to base herself permanently in San Francisco, which is what has happened. And in those circumstances, the guru had no choice but to follow. They will go a bit later this year, on a promise to return in time to oversee preparations for the 2015 election.

363. The BBC: less trustworthy, more dangerous than a cannibal polar bear – Telegraph Blogs
Today's endangered polar bear story du jour comes, you won't be at all surprised to hear, from the BBC's news website. An "environmental photojournalist" named Jenny E Ross took a photograph of a polar bear eating a cub – and concluded, as of course any self-respecting environmental photojournalist would, that this was probably the result of "climate change"."This type of intraspecific predation has always occurred to some extent," she told BBC News.

364. The Wets are reclaiming the Tory party - Telegraph
It was David Cameron’s worst week until it became Ed Miliband’s worst week – and then, within hours, it was Cameron’s worst week again. If you blinked at the wrong moment, you missed a whole epoch in national politics. George Galloway was still strutting around the broadcasting studios exulting in the damage he had done to the Labour leadership (which was being described in excitable Labour circles as terminal) when Unite announced that there would be no – repeat, no – haulage strike over Easter, thus rendering the government-induced panic over petrol even more ridiculous. Then this comedy of ineptitude began to look more like tragedy when a woman was critically burned as a more-or-less direct consequence of ministerial warnings about an imminent fuel shortage: warnings that were transparently designed not to avert a crisis but to create the impression of one in order to discredit Labour and its trade union allies.

365. Just imagine if the Iron Lady had got the big call wrong – Telegraph Blogs
I sense that the share price of Margaret Thatcher anecdotes is peaking, so I’m offloading some stock. Ten years ago, the great woman came to lunch with a group of Telegraph writers. Determined not to ask a sententious question about public policy, I instead blurted out: ‘Is there anything worth watching on television at the moment, Lady Thatcher?’She fixed her fierce blue eyes on me, trying to remember who I was. (On a previous occasion, I had managed to thump her on the elbow while making an expansive point, and she has been wary in my presence ever since.) Then she softened. ‘We enjoy the Sunday evening programmes, dear, especially those stirring Methodist hymns. But we find that even they are becoming a little wishy-washy these days’.It is often said that Margaret Thatcher had no small talk, but this is another way of saying that she took even the paltriest things very seriously.

366. If ever we get out of this economic mess, it'll be thanks to City AM – not the Financial...
There's a characteristically good editor's letter in City AM today on Tax Freedom Day.CONGRATULATIONS: you’ve just started to work for yourself. Today is tax freedom day, the day when Britons stop working for the chancellor and start working for themselves. The Adam Smith Institute has calculated that for the first 149 days of the year, every penny earned by the average UK resident will be taken by the government in tax. This year’s tax freedom day falls two days later than it did in 2011; net tax hikes mean the government is taking a larger share of our hard-earned income than before. That remains true despite the chancellor’s humiliating and confusing partial u-turn on the pasty and caravan taxes last night.

367. Young people’s ‘yolo’ spending is a symptom of a much bigger problem | Spectator Coffee House
‘You’ve got to stop eating those croissants,’ my parents tell me. I know they’re right, but have they seen the croissants? As crisp as a Hilton bed sheet and golden like the sun. They caution that they’re a waste of money, and I get it. In the early stages of my addiction I forked out £1.50 apiece; then the coffee shop grew hungry for more. £1.75 they demanded. That’s £8.75 a working week. Think of a month’s worth. (You do the maths – because I can’t).For years I’ve had enormous remorse over my unnecessary spending, believing myself to be the naughty one of my friends. But then a company called RateSetter made me see my croissant addiction in a different light. In its study, which was published earlier this week, it found that enormous swathes of 18 to 30-year-olds spend money on similar items – such as coffee, takeaways, fashion and Netflix. Researchers have described this cohort as ‘yolo’ (you only live once) spenders.
