273. Osborne's tax breaks for frackers: at once too much and too little – and far, far too late...
Two cheers for George Osborne's latest announcement on tax breaks for frackers. Actually, maybe one cheer, because I can see at least a couple of things seriously wrong with it.The first is that it is a function not of high principle and sound practice but of the internecine warfare which has been ravaging this useless Coalition throughout its existence. Fracking would be great for Britain and it's what our economy very much needs sooner rather than later. All the relatively sane members of the Coalition have long known this from Owen Paterson and Michael Fallon to Osborne himself. But at every turn they have been hamstrung by the Lib Dem green ideologues at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, led by the dreaded Ed Davey, who have put every conceivable obstacle in the nascent industry's way. Osborne's tax break, in other words, is merely an expensive means of trying to counter DECC's obstructionism.

274. The only EU referendum worth holding is one on membership - Telegraph Blogs
Almost no politician – other than Ken Clarke, obviously – admits to being against a referendum on the EU. Yet, oddly, we never seem to hold one. It’s easy enough to see why. Politicians dislike referendums, but like winning elections, and understand that there is massive public support for a vote on the EU. They therefore play it long, assuring us of their commitment in principle to a plebiscite, but warning us, Humphrey-like, that now is not the most propitious moment. Reluctant to allow the possibility of Britain voting to secede, they keep deferring the decision, hoping that something will turn up.Many Euro-enthusiasts now think they have identified that something: the new treaty being demanded by Angela Merkel, intended to intensify the political integration of the…

275. Cameron's reshuffle: too little, too late – Telegraph Blogs
David Cameron, as we know, is an arch practitioner of government by essay crisis. Every time you think it's all going to come crashing on top of him, he stays up all night on his Red Bull and Pro Plus, and dashes off something just good enough to persuade the world that the moment to send him down has not arrived quite just yet.

276. Osborne is sharpening his axe - but will Cameron let him use it? – Telegraph Blogs
There was a time when David Cameron thought Twitter was for twats, but that was before the social media network became a turbo-charged means of shaping public and media opinion. Now it turns out that Twitter is for him, and Downing Street will shortly be introducing @DavidCameronLeader, or something similar, which will bring us the daily thoughts of the Prime Minister. The official No 10 account, which pumps out Government news and details of what Mr Cameron is up to, has more than two million subscribers, but cannot be used to make political points. The PM’s advisers, who are frustrated by hostility in the media and indifference among broadcasters, say Twitter will allow him to reach voters directly with his version of the Government’s successes and failures.

277. 'Kim so horny': pornography might be the one North Korean industry that's flourishing –...
Porn, porn, porn, porn, porn. Thanks to David Cameron’s crusade against filth, all anyone can think about in Britain at the moment is porn (and the Royal Baby – that’s a big thing here, too). And with so much hardcore smut on my mind, I of course got to thinking – do the North Koreans indulge in this most vile of vices? Turns out, they do.At first, you might think North Korea is a very puritanical society. Back in the 2000s, a South Korean women’s underwear factory operating in the Hermit Kingdom was nearly shut down after communist officials found that workers were wrapping the produce in paper that featured nearly-nude women. Golly gosh, shock horror! The only way to keep the factory open was to let only female labourers do the wrapping in closed rooms. It gives the impression that North Koreans are all too busy launching satellites and building socialism to waste time on Debbie Does Dallas. But think again. According to blogger Moon Sung Hwee, one of the few liberalisations that Kim Jong-il (AKA The Dear Leader) brought to North Korea, after he replaced his father as Kim Number One, was a voracious appetite for smut.

278. Rotherham, Hislop, Common Purpose – Telegraph Blogs
Perhaps the least surprising aspect of the Rotherham childcare story is that Car Crash Commissar and Child Catcher in Chief Joyce Thacker was a member of Common Purpose. The secretive Fabian organisation has been getting quite a bit of media attention, lately, thanks to a bravura investigation conducted by the Daily Mail. Common Purpose has been described as a Left-wing version of the Freemasons (apologies to the Freemasons who certainly don't deserve to be bracketed in the same noisome category) and to get an idea how it operates, here's an excerpt from the Mail piece

279. The euro is nothing more than a sacred cow. It is time to take it to the abattoir –...
At the turn of the year we naturally look forward to what the next twelve months might hold for us, both as individuals and as a country. But it is not a bad idea to look back to what was happening, or rather not happening, twelve months ago. What strikes me is that very few of the Guardianista or BBC establishment were then even prepared to discuss the possibility that the euro might be heading for partial, let alone complete, collapse.Yet here we are. Today Programme interviewers can no longer laugh to scorn those who have long predicted a crisis of the kind now facing the eurozone. Senior bankers and Treasury Ministers now admit to contingency planning for the odds-on case of Greece leaving the euro – and for the possibility that Italy and Spain might follow.

280. The greatest lesson of the last 50 years: change isn't always progress – Telegraph Blogs
It is all too easy for a blogger to respond a bit too much to the headlines of the day, so every now and again I think it useful to stand back and look at some long-term trends.David Cameron used to speak about Britain's broken society, and even Ed Miliband makes socialist noises about society from time to time. The Lib Dems concede, too, that there are some deep-rooted problems facing any government which could not be solved by handing everything over to Brussels.I know well enough that as a man of eighty years, if I say that many things were better in our society when I was young, those who never knew those years will condemn me as an addled old fool living in the past.

284. Boris is unstoppable, and now Murdoch wants him to lead the Tory party – Telegraph Blogs
David Cameron is on course to lose the next election, and his leadership, and he knows it. He has admitted as much to friends, who are even now using the summer weeks to debate what might be done to get the Prime Minister out of his difficulties. On the surface, normal business is suspended. The Olympic truce has been embraced by the political classes. The Games fortnight offers a respite from daily combat. But behind the scenes nothing has changed. The Government is still scratching around furiously to produce some sort of autumn relaunch that might give the Coalition fresh impetus, while Tory MPs agonise about their future and scheme their schemes. And among the plotters, it is Boris Johnson who has snatched the spotlight away from the Prime Minister and used the Games as a launch pad for his leadership ambitions.

285. Things are looking brighter and brighter for UKIP and darker and darker for the Lib Dems –...
The second batch of by-elections at Croydon, Bradford and Rochdale seemed to confirm the trends to be seen in the earlier contests. Labour did quite well, although with such low percentage polls it is hard to say if they were flattered by the particulalry poor performance of the Lib Dems and indeed of the Conservatives. Clearly those with most to shout about were UKIP, with two second places and one third, compared with the Tories' one third, one fourth and one humiliating eighth, or the Lib Dems appalling score of one third, one fourth and one eighth.Rotherham was, of course fought in particularly favourable circumstances for UKIP. The appalling allegation that UKIP supporters, being racists, were unfit to foster children was so outrageous and gave UKIP such publicity that they were bound to do well.

286. Nothing being done to stop massive electoral fraud in Tower Hamlets | Local Government
Cllr Peter Golds, leader of the Conservative opposition in Tower Hamlets, says the police and the Electoral Commission are ineffective in ensuring free and fair elections in his boroughIn terms of the conduct of elections, the Borough of Tower Hamlets is in a league of its own. The lack of action taken on fraud and intimidation can be laid at the police and election officials. However, the system itself must share responsibility.

287. 97 per cent of the world to be destroyed tomorrow! – Telegraph Blogs
No, not really. It's just my little joke, based on pretending to take people like the BBC's resident climate activists David Shukman, Richard Black and Roger Harrabin seriously.I'll tell you what doesn't amuse me, though. Here I am in Wales, on my holidays, enjoying the semi-sun, and suddenly I get emails from and Tweets from sensible people on my side of the argument saying: "Help! Help! The BBC has gone mad for this story about the NASA satellite showing that 97 per cent of Greenland has melted and apparently it's 'unprecedented'. What do we do?"

288. Floods policy: yet more evidence the Coalition just doesn't have a ruddy clue – Telegraph...
Yesterday it was reported that the Coalition had decided we should all be liable for the cost of flood damage, regardless of where we live. This puzzled me, as the Coalition's decisions so often do. The only way it would make any kind of sense would be if you believed a) flooding is a new and unnatural phenomenon resulting directly from late 20th century Man Made Climate Change or b) that everyone is now so stupid they cannot be trusted to act in their own best interests and that it is therefore government's job to hold their hands and wipe their bottoms for them from cradle to grave.
