241. Leftists become incandescent when reminded of the socialist roots of Nazism – Telegraph...
On 16 June 1941, as Hitler readied his forces for Operation Barbarossa, Josef Goebbels looked forward to the new order that the Nazis would impose on a conquered Russia. There would be no come-back, he wrote, for capitalists nor priests nor Tsars. Rather, in the place of debased, Jewish Bolshevism, the Wehrmacht would deliver “der echte Sozialismus”: real socialism.Goebbels never doubted that he was a socialist. He understood Nazism to be a better and more plausible form of socialism than that propagated by Lenin. Instead of spreading itself across different nations, it would operate within the unit of the Volk.

242. The Tory action this weekend is in Windsor – Telegraph Blogs
The blogs editor doesn’t much like it when I use this space to plug my engagements, so I’ll keep this brief. If you’re free on Saturday, come to what promises to be a superb political conference in Windsor. Speakers include Roger Scruton, Tim Montgomerie, Toby Young, Matt Elliot, Syed Kamall and me.Windsor is an outstanding example of what Conservatives can achieve unencumbered by coalition. Its local authority is, by any measure, one of the most innovative and successful in England: the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has improved services while cutting taxes, exactly as Centre-Right administrations should. Many of the great Conservative policies of past years, from allowing tenants to buy their homes to bringing in entrepreneurs to turn around failing schools, were pioneered by Tory councillors.

243. Paxo gets a stuffing - Telegraph Blogs
So how exactly would the BBC cover Peter Lilley's devastating critique of the Stern Review? This week we had our answer on Newsnight: by trying to bury it beneath a piece of reportage so shrill and tendentious it might have come straight off a Greenpeace press release…. (H/T Bishop Hill)As indeed it pretty much did. The report concerned a Cambridge professor named Peter Wadhams who would like us to believe that he has found devastating new evidence that the arctic is melting faster than ever before. And guess who's providing the mother ship for his adventures?Greenpeace, that's who!Now can you imagine the fuss if a polar research team was sent to the arctic on a ship paid for by Koch Industries. Or Exxon. Or even Biteback, evil, mainly right-wing publisher of James Delingpole's Watermelons. The greenies would have a fit wouldn't they? There'd be a whole wailing wall's worth of lamentation from Monbiot, and Leo Hickman, and Damian Carrington and all the usual suspects. Any scientific research that emerged therefrom would be declared wholly invalid because of its outrageously biased source. So why don't similar rules apply to Greenpeace, a hard-left, virulently anti-capitalist organisation

245. Hollywood fracks up – Telegraph Blogs
Matt Damon's new film Promised Land sounds really promising. It's about a cynical young man sent by a large wind farm company to a lovely village in rural Pennsylvania to seduce the locals with tales of the massive sums of money they'll make if they sign a deal to have huge wind turbines built on their farmland.Dollar signs flash in the greedy hicks' eyes. This wind farm scam is crazy: no way would they have made that much money in their entire lives from just farming. Every one rushes to Damon: "Where do I sign?"But Damon has begun falling in love with a local farm girl who tells him the truth about wind farms: that they're ugly, that they kill birds and bats, that they ravage the countryside, blight views, divide communities and make people sick with their Low Frequency Noise. So instead of bribing locals to have these bat-chomping bird-slicing eco-crucifixes erected in their village, Damon leads the fight back. NO MORE WIND FARMS!f only. But the sad truth is that this lame-assed, eco-propaganda movie has nothing whatsoever to do with the genuine threat of wind farms but with the almost wholly imaginary one of fracking. Fracking has been a godsend to the US economy, blessing it with clean, cheap, abundant energy which has enriched those states lucky enough to have big shale gas reserves, created jobs and increased America's energy security by reducing its reliance on imported gas from unstable countries. What's not to like about shale gas?Well indeed. And this is proving something of a problem for America's showbiz bleeding hearts.

247. Newspapers are worth fighting for – even when they’re wrong - Telegraph
Our imperilled press has proved its value. Don’t let over-regulation weaken it fatally, argues Boris Johnson.Poor old Judge Leveson. I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes. After all those months of hearings, he is now expected to come up with proposals to “regulate” the media, and the Labour Party has said it will back whatever he says. The longer he deliberates, cold towel wrapped around his throbbing temples, the louder the caterwauling from either side of the argument....... it seems incredible that we are proposing new regulation for the traditional forms of media just when they are facing the biggest threat to print since Gutenberg. I have it on good authority that they had a brainstorming session at the Guardian the other day, and discussed the possibility of axing the print version altogether. There is apparently a well-advanced plan to stop the presses, spare the trees and go completely online, within the next two years....... Take it online and you lose all political impact; you lose the vital editorial marshalling of the often excellent journalists and cartoonists and photographers into a single daily statement, a single product – and everything gets lost in the morass of Google news. We will always need a real and not a virtual Guardian.Guilt-ridden Lefties will need it to swat the mosquitoes in Tuscany, or to light the wood-burning stoves in their second homes, or to line the tuck boxes of their little ones as they guiltily pack them off – like dear Polly Toynbee – to their fee-paying schools. And it would be a calamity for us Conservatives if we no longer knew what the enemy was thinking. We need a paper that is genuinely, viscerally hostile to anything that looks remotely like a spirit of enterprise and competition. We need a paper that believes capitalism is fundamentally flawed; that wishes fewer people had jobs in financial services; that thinks the euro was and still is a jolly fine idea; that dislikes the ideology of home ownership (except for Guardian journalists, who are allowed to have more than one); that dislikes anything “elitist” (except for the schools attended by the children of Guardian journalists).

248. Children just aren't going to know what sun is – Telegraph Blogs
There's a great piece by David Rose in the Mail On Sunday nicely summing up what a lot of us here knew already: that the thing we really need to fear right now is not global warming but global cooling. And that, on current evidence, it's global cooling we're going to get.The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years. The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century.Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.Rose's piece comes hot on the heels of an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal signed by 16 distinguished scientists (proper ones: not "climate" "scientists") noting the continuing absence of ManBearPig:

249. Victims are the last people who should set policy – Telegraph Blogs
I hadn’t planned to blog about Leveson. Everyone else has had a say, and you don’t need to read much further than the posts on Telegraph Blogs by James Delingpole, Dan Hodges and Rupert Myers to see what’s wrong with a state-regulated press. But I’ve been driven to take to the keyboard by the repeated suggestion that the response to the report ought to be determined by victims of press abuse rather than by our elected representatives. It’s not a new phenomenon. There will always be editors who want the mothers of fallen Servicemen to comment on whether we should be in Afghanistan or who want Doreen Lawrence to be the final arbiter of the government’s policy on race. Still, here is a hard thing that needs saying: victims deserve our sympathy and our respect, but they are no more qualified than anyone else to determine what the law should be.

250. Can you blame MPs for taking their voters for granted? – Telegraph Blogs
What does Labour have to do to lose a seat like Rotherham? The previous MP, Denis MacShane, resigned after obtaining public money by deceit – a far worse case of malfeasance than many which attracted heavier opprobrium during the expenses revelations. The candidate chosen to select him, Sarah Champion, was imposed by the NEC, prompting half the local party to walk out in protest. The council's inactivity over child grooming cases was juxtaposed with its unbelievable removal of foster children from UKIP-voting parents.

251. Teen Ed Miliband wanted Britain to leave Europe but now refuses referendum demanded by his union backers
Ed Miliband was ridiculed today for spending his teens campaigning for Britain to leave Europe. The Labour leader delivered leaflets in the 1983 general election campaign, in which left-wing leader Michael Foot vowed to withdraw the UK from the European Community.David Cameron joked about it being ‘his idea of fun’ as a Tory MP claimed it was ‘strange’ that Mr Miliband now opposes holding an in-out referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU.

252. Red Pill, Blue Pill | Telegraph Blogs
The other day m'learned colleague Ambrose Evans Pritchard wrote a piece in praise of money-printing. What the world needs is more Quantitative Easing, he argued, though this time deployed in "nuclear force."I have no doubt that this would bring about a full recovery very fast if conducted with enough panache, but is it possible to marshal political consent for such revolutionary action? The Tea Party Congress, like Europe's bourgeousie, would rather wallow in liquidation, Puritan cleansing, and mass default than tolerate the possibility of a solution.I couldn't disagree more violently with this analysis.

254. God, I'm brilliant! – Telegraph Blogs
Like my esteemed colleague Dan Hannan, I have a pathological aversion to posting up videos of myself on my blogs. In this case, however, I feel I must make an exception. It's not often you get to appear on Uncommon Knowledge being interviewed by the mighty Peter Robinson. (Our subjects: Climategate; Watermelons; the imminent collapse of Europe)Peter Robinson is the uber-poised, uber-intelligent, uber-civilised (well he did go to Ch Ch) commentator, broadcaster and former Reagan aide who as a young man scripted the "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Brandenburg Gate speech in Berlin in 1987. He's the co-founder of the US conservative website Ricochet which contains some of the most brilliant writing in the entire blogosphere and fabbo podcasts too including one mysteriously called Radio Free Delingpole

256. Ignore the scaremongering: America would be better off if Britain left the EU – Telegraph...
Would a British exit from the EU harm Britain’s partnership with the United States, and weaken the Special Relationship? The idea that it would is an argument that is being increasingly deployed by Eurofederalists on both sides of the Atlantic, and the Obama administration has also sent strong signals that it is against a British withdrawal.I expect that the US angle will be hammered on heavily by the pro-EU lobby in advance of the planned 2017 UK referendum, even among those who care little about the Anglo-American alliance. In Nick Clegg’s words, “we would not be taken as seriously by the American friends. The special relationship is special because they rely on us to stand tall in our own European back yard. That would not happen if we turn our back on Europe.” Downing Street has also played into this argument, highlighting US concerns, as has the Labour opposition. Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander has warned that Britain would be “relegated diplomatically and economically.”
