225. Why is the BBC wasting our money on JK Rowling's socialist misery porn? – Telegraph Blogs
JK Rowling says it made her want to cry, the scene in her first adult book The Casual Vacancy, where council-flat Krystal tells her little brother Robbie to eat his crisps before his Rolos. I'll bet it did. I've no doubt in JK's imagination, its one of those literary heartbreak moments right up there with the death of Little Nell – or even the death of Dobbie the House Elf. Well obviously it would be because, as we know, the primary duty of any half way serious author is not to bother with decent plotlines or plausible characters or a reasonable prose style. Rather, it is to show how totally you empathise with the plight of the poor and downtrodden. In The Casual Vacancy, Rowling has achieved this not just through brilliant imaginative exercises like the Rolo 'n' crisps scene but also by the daring move of making anyone who actually works for a living (you know, the vile pigs who provide the money that keeps Krystal and Robbie in crisps n Rolos) more hateful and despicable in every way than Snape and Voldemort combined.

226. If this is Britain's energy policy, we're toast | Telegraph Blogs
"Global warming" is SO totally over. Even President Obama concedes this now. The problem is that after twenty years or more of infectious drivel from the richly-funded global junk science community (NASA, the Royal Society, the "University" of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit, the National Academy of Sciences, etc), the minds of too many politicians have been poisoned, and too much damage has already been done.Which brings us to Energy Secretary Ed Davey's draft energy bill. It's a disaster. It will, if implemented, do untold damage to the British economy and the British landscape.

227. The reason we can now debate immigration is that racism is in decline – Telegraph Blogs
“Racist! Racist!” chorused the trainee barristers. And they meant it. It was the early 1990s, and I was debating the Maastricht Treaty before an audience of young lawyers at one of the Inns of Court. My debating partner had listed a series of policies that were being partially transferred to Brussels: policing, diplomacy, environmental regulation and so on. When he added immigration to the list, the gowns before us began to shake angrily. It takes a real effort to remember the way immigration used to be discussed. Or, rather, not discussed. As my debating partner found, to raise the subject at all was to invite accusations of bigotry. Never mind that he hadn’t said whether the EU would increase or decrease migratory flows. Never mind that the beneficiaries of EU free movement would be overwhelmingly white. You couldn’t even use the word “immigration”.

228. France and Greece are just the beginning – Europe is entering a downward spiral –...
I write in the Daily Mail about Europe's rejection of austerity. It's not just the French and Greek election results. Within the past ten days, the Dutch and Romanian governments have also been brought down over their attempts to make savings. The same thing will keep happening across the Continent, at election after election.Eurocrats, too, are tiptoing away from cuts, belatedly aware of how outrageous it sounded to argue for austerity in the 27 member states while demanding a 6.8 per cent budget increase for themselves. We can expect a very different strategy now, one based on higher spending and deeper European integration. Stand by for Eurobonds, a common finance minister, pan-European taxes, EU-wide stimulus packages etc. This was, of course, the approach which brought Europe to its present…

229. Eurosceptics – an apology – Telegraph Blogs
"In common with all other Europhile columnists, I have spent the past 20 years suggesting that opponents of the EU are little better than football hooligans. Whatever their stated objections, I have insisted on inferring chauvinism as their real motive. Eurosceptics might have protested that the European Commission was undemocratic, that the EU budget was corrupt, that the Common Agricultural and Fisheries Policies were disastrous. But I interpreted these objections as crude dog-whistles to xenophobes. Critics of the Brussels system might speak Esperanto (as Sir Teddy does), or be married to Germans (as Nigel Farage is), but I dismissed them as Little Englanders of the ugliest sort."I now accept that they were right all along. The EU has wrecked our economy, distorted our democracy and curtailed our liberty....

230. Memo to the Occupy protesters: here are ten things we evil capitalists really think –...
Chatting to some Occupy protesters this morning, I was struck by how wide of the mark were the beliefs they attributed to me as a Right-winger. In the interests of deeper understanding, here are ten things which – trust me – most of the Tory scum I hang around with think. Obviously, I don’t expect to turn my Leftie readers in a single post; still, they might get a clearer idea of what we actually believe.

231. 'Creating a fairer Britain': inside the confused world of the Equality and Human Rights Commission
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has just published its “Business Plan” for 2014/15.Of course it is not a business. I am not sure if the Commission sees itself as running a business, i.e. that it is confused about itself, or if it uses the word to confuse the rest of us, in the way that HMRC calls me one of its “customers” as it helps itself to the contents of my wallet. At any rate the Commission's “Chair” which I thought was a piece of furniture, and surely that should be Chairwoman, the Baroness O'Neill tells me that there are “wide-ranging plans to take action to promote fairness and equality of opportunity in Britain's future economy”, “to promote fair access to public services, and autonomy and dignity in service delivery,” and “to promote dignity and respect, and safeguard people's safety”.I would not want anyone to think that I am opposed to fairness in our society. However, I fear that the Commission all too often confuses fairness of opportunity with equality of outcome.

232. An EU referendum is coming. Which party will get the credit? – Telegraph Blogs
It's the Prisoner's Dilemma. The party which offers a referendum on leaving the EU will gain a hefty electoral premium. Though neither of the big two is exactly enthusiastic – politicians rarely like to initiate projects with uncertain outcomes – each wants to stop the other getting there first. In March, I suggested that an In/Out referendum was starting to look inevitable. A month later, Newsnight's Allegra Stratton, whose sources are generally excellent, Tweeted that both parties were moving that way. A few days afterwards, Patrick O'Flynn reported in the Daily Express that Labour would promise a referendum in its next manifesto. The following week, Peter Mandelson called for such a vote. Now James Forsyth writes in the Spectator (no link) that the inclusion of a Europe referendum in the next Conservative manifesto is 'basically a certainty'. There is some discussion over the precise timing and wording, though the preferred scenario seems to be an In/Out vote following a renegotiation, as first suggested here. Even The Economist has reluctantly come to accept that such a vote is on the way.

233. Archbishop Sentamu's real offence in the eyes of his nasty critics is that he sticks firmly to...
The public debate about the succession to the post of Archbishop of Canterbury brought to my mind an incident some years ago in the days of the NuLab government, when I derived some constructive amusement from my work on the Opposition back benches. As I walked up the stairs from the Members’ entrance to the House, one of the more light-heated of the bishops fell into step with me, and we exchanged greetings before he cheerily asked me: “What mischief are you up to today, Lord Tebbit?”

234. 97 per cent of climate activists in the pay of Big Oil shock! – Telegraph Blogs
Unless you're a reader of the Guardian Environment's recently added section "Sacrifice your children to Mother Gaia. It's the only way!", you'll probably never have heard of the man who co-edits it, Dana Nuccitelli. But you'll certainly be familiar with his most famous bogus statistical artefact: the one he created with fellow climate alarmist John Cook to prove that 97 per cent of climate scientists really DO believe in global warming. The claim has been roundly debunked. Apart from the problems with its statistical methodology, its findings are essentially meaningless. As Ben Pile points out in this characteristically measured, thoughtful piece,"Nuccitelli’s survey results are either the result of a comprehensive failure to understand the climate debate, or an attempt to divide it in such a way as to frame the result for political ends."

235. How the green lobby smears its enemies – Telegraph Blogs
To those of us who were children between the early 1960s and and the early nineties, Johnny Ball was always something of hero. First he presented Play School, later he presented the maths entertainment series Think Of A Number. We liked Johnny. He was always smiling, always engaging. He was one of us. Then later, he went on to enjoy even greater credibility by being the dad of Radio 1 (now Radio 2) DJ Zoe Ball and therefore the father in law of DJ Norman Cook aka Fat Boy Slim.

236. If Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the FT is a free market newspaper, God help France – Telegraph...
Mon centre cède, ma droite recule, situation excellente, j'attaque. The lower he sinks in the opinion polls, the more pugnacious Nicolas Sarkozy becomes. His favourite target is Britain – specifically, free-market capitalism as he imagines it to be practised in Britain.Earlier today, in an especially bizarre outburst, he picked on the Financial Times. 'The FT, as they say in informed circles, has always defended the Anglo-Saxon model, considering the French incorrigible and that we would do better to align ourselves to the Anglo-Saxon model,' he said during a television debate. 'The FT has thought for many years that the solution for the world is that there should be no law. I think exactly the opposite.'There's nothing wrong with national stereotypes, Sarko, but get them right, death of my life and the sacred blue. The notion that the FT is a doctrinally capitalist newspaper is so far off the mark that it's hard to know where criticism should begin. Since at least the early 1980s, the FT has been a corporatist paper of the Centre-Left, occasionally pro-business, but never pro-market. It opposed Margaret Thatcher's economic reforms, taking its hostility so far that it was, in effect, the only British newspaper openly to regret her victory in the Falklands War. Never mind Tony Blair; it backed Neil Kinnock in 1992. It was the single strongest supporter of ERM membership. It loudly applauded the monetary splurge which followed the credit crunch.

Low interest rates, cheap money, incentivised debt, disincentivised thrift: these were precisely the things that caused the crash in the first place. We won't get out of our predicament by accelerating the policies that got us into it.

238. Chris Huhne's favourite yoghurt ingredient – Telegraph Blogs
Let me explain the analogy, which I first introduced to a nauseated world in a Spectator column penned in bile in the aftermath the Eton Grocer's spectacular general election non-victory. Here's the relevant passage:Quite the most absurd piece of recrimination I've heard so far from the Cameroons, though, is the notion that the real people to blame for all this are those 900,000 or so folk who voted UKIP, as well as all those rabid head-banging types like James Delingpole who were so unhelpful in pointing out the flaws in Project Cameron's splendid policies. If only we'd held our noses and accepted that the Cameroons, for all their flaws, were our last hope of restoring Conservatism to power in Britain, then Dave might be in position right now to effect Real Change. This is what I call the Dog S**t Yoghurt Fallacy. Suppose your preferred brand of fruit yoghurt manufacturer has been losing sales of late and has decided, after doing a bit of market research, that it may be necessary to alter the formula slightly. What at least some of the punters are clamouring for these days, it seems, is not chunks of fruit in their yoghurt but bits of dog poo instead.
