177. Why can't the Conservatives all be like Michael Gove? – Telegraph Blogs
Gove: truly we should worship and adore his mighty wondrousness (pic PA)."We're ready to walk out on Europe," Michael Gove has apparently been telling friends. And if there were to be any referendum on the subject he'd vote out.In any sane world this wouldn't be a story. Or only a story along the lines of "Fried eggs don't half go well with bacon," says Education Secretary. Or "dark sky at night, light sky in the morning" observes Gove. The reason it is a story is that we're so unused to hearing any member of our useless government say anything remotely in tune with what the electorate actually feels. Here is Gove saying what most of us have been thinking for years. And being thoroughly, deservedly applauded for it.

178. Ed Miliband lookalike: The worst job I ever had | Mail Online
One of the funniest, and filthiest, sketches on Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s disgusting Derek and Clive Live tapes was called The Worst Job I Ever Had.This being a family newspaper, I won’t detain you with the lurid details. But I’ve often wondered what would be the worst job in the world today.I don’t mean having to stack shelves in Poundland, which some dopey bird has just claimed is a denial of her fundamental human rights.Cait Reilly was even given a column in — where else? — the Guardian yesterday to whine that being asked to undertake a few weeks’ unpaid training at Poundland, or forfeit her £53 a week Jobseeker’s Allowance, was not just beneath her dignity, it was tantamount to ‘forced labour’.Shelf-stacking may not require a university education, or generate much intellectual stimulation, but it is honest toil and provides a valuable service. If it was a toss-up between stacking shelves or going in to politics, you’d find most sensible folk banging on the back door of Poundland any day of the week.According to the Boys in the Bubble, the worst job in the world right now is Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.Even in the vipers’ nest of Westminster, there are very few people who would volunteer to swap places with Ed Miliband. His opinion poll ratings are at rock bottom, his own party openly mutinous. There were times when, if only out of professional curiosity, I’d have taken a passing interest in the fate of the leader of the Labour Party. But the moment Miliband popped up on the Andy Marr show on Sunday, I decided life was too short and switched over immediately to Sky Sports, where Brian Woolnough and his guests were discussing the far more interesting topic of two-footed tackles.Ed Miliband wouldn’t even win a popularity contest in his own family.

179. No Briton can be indifferent when it comes to making a proper cup of tea – Telegraph Blogs
George Orwell once wrote an essay called A Nice Cup of Tea. It wasn't a political allegory. It was about how to, you know, make a nice cup of tea.British people tend to give this question due reverence – as, indeed, do our kindred in the Anglopshere, from Bombay to Bermuda. I've found, though, that the only EU states where you can rely on decent tea are those which, at one time or another, were under the Crown: Ireland, Malta and Cyprus. Elsewhere in Europe, tea means half a cup of lukewarm water with the teabag, still wrapped in paper, on the saucer. The only English-speaking country where the quality of tea is patchy is, curiously enough, the United States. I say 'curiously enough' because, given the circumstances in which the American Revolution began, you'd think the locals took the stuff seriously. Maybe it became unpatriotic to admit as much after 1773. Certainly the tea in Canada, whither many defeated Loyalists repaired, is excellent.

180. The Royal Society is a joke - Telegraph Blogs
I don't want to spoil the plot of my brilliant new book Watermelons – soon to be available in Oz, too, under the title Killing The Earth To Save It - but there's quite a funny bit in the middle (it actually made my wife laugh) where I compare the scientific achievements of the Royal Society with that of Oxford English graduate James Delingpole.Needless to say, Delingpole's achievements ("turned litmus paper blue by dipping in alkali – 1973") don't quite match up to those of the Royal Society's alumni ("designed St Paul's Cathedral; laid groundwork for classical mechanics; discovered law of gravity and three laws of motion…"). But the punchline is this: for all his inadequacies, Delingpole is a lot more trustworthy on "Climate Change" and "global warming" than the Royal Society. The reason for this is very simple: under its most recent three presidents, the Royal Society has abandoned its traditions of scrupulous scientific neutrality in order to immerse itself in political activism.

181. Why do I call them bat-chomping, bird-slicing eco crucifixes….? – Telegraph Blogs
I wonder what it will take before the world truly wakes up to the horror, the corruption, the expense, the pointlessness, the total wrongness-in-every-way of the wind industry. My guess – and it will happen – is the decapitation, by a rogue turbine blade, of an innocent passer-by.Till then, though, we have photographs like this to send the mind boggling as to why anyone, anywhere can still be so purblind as to go on championing these bat-chomping, bird-slicing eco crucifixes. What's particularly interesting about this one is that it was taken in the constituency of one of wind power's most fervent and tireless advocates, Caroline Lucas MP.Here's a picture of the Brighton Bird Chomper

182. Big Wind: the most corrupt and corrupting industry in the world – Telegraph Blogs
There's an excellent article in the Copenhagen Post which I'm going to reprint here in full. It's by a retired high court judge called Peter Rørdam. I'm reprinting it because apart from the place names, every last detail applies to the UK wind industry too. And – from what I've seen personally – the Australian one. And the US and Canadian ones as well. The reason the industry is so corrupt is quite simply that without the lies it tells as a matter of course and without the cosy stitch-ups it arranges with regulators and politicians at taxpayers' expense, it simply would not exist. Take the noise regulations which are currently the subject of an enquiry by the Institute of Acoustics. The reason these noise regulations so badly need re-examining is that the original parameters for noise limits were set by people working for the wind industry with a vested interest in making it as easy as possible for wind farms to be built in as many places as possible. They make no allowance whatsoever for the damage to human health now known to be caused by Low Frequency Noise which – hey guess, what? – isn't even measured by the tame acoustics experts who work on behalf of the wind developers because the system has been rigged so they don't have to.

183. Harriet Harman: Help! Help! Theresa May has "dogged my path"...followed me round TV...
Never let it be said that the Daily Mail is incapable of squeezing every last drop of vinegar from the sponge. As I highlight in the newslinks below, the paper manages to cram into its headline reporting the Labour Deputy Leader's interview with Total Politics that she is:An Earl's niece,Attended a £20,000-a-year school,And is the daughter of a Harley Street doctor.

184. Ed Miliband 'plans to use public funds to bail out Labour' | Mail Online
Secret moves by Ed Miliband to use millions of pounds of public funds to bail out the Labour Party by raiding allowances paid to councillors were revealed last night.A leaked report shows that the Opposition leader plans to force more than 5,000 Labour councillors to hand over seven per cent of their town hall ‘wages’ to stop party coffers running dry.And Labour’s frontbench team has called for increases in wages paid to councillors, which would benefit the party by resulting in an increase in the value of the new levy.Draconian methods have been prepared to enforce what one Labour MP referred to as the ‘Miliband rescue levy’.Those who refuse to pay up will be thrown out of the party.

186. European conservatism isn't done for yet – Telegraph Blogs
Conservatives, while often gloomy in their political outlook, tend to be warm and merry in their personality. I’ve just spent the weekend in Oxford with 120 young activists from around Europe, and found myself lifted by their optimism. They came from across the continent, from Iceland and the Faroe Islands to Turkey and Moldova. There were delegates, too, from our Anglosphere allies: Young Republicans from the US, Young Liberals from Australia, a Francophone Tory from Quebec. Some were libertarians, others conservatives. A few wanted to become MPs, but most were simply interested in advancing their ideas. They were fizzing with energy – some Polish girls, having stayed up all night with everyone else, cheerfully went straight on to Mass on Sunday morning – and they could all see very clearly what most…

187. Small wonder Labour are enthusiastic tax-avoiders - the party is in dire financial straits
Today's Times contains an awkward revelation for Ed Miliband - despite turning a surplus last year, Labour managed to organise its tax affairs so efficiently that the party paid no corporation tax whatsoever.Of course, there's no suggestion they did anything illegal, but given Miliband's regular drum-beating about the immorality of tax avoidance it is more than ironic to see his party's accountants engaged in such nifty footwork. Had they paid tax on the headline surplus, their bill would have been over half a million pounds.

188. The Left has gone loopy | Telegraph Blogs
The polls have narrowed. Labour’s lead has evaporated to between 1 and 2 per cent. Miliband no longer looks like a PM in waiting, but like a Neil Kinnock tribute act. What’s going on?The Left has gone loopy, that’s what. It’s not me saying it, but what thousands of voters seem to be telling the pollsters each week. Westminster watchers are so busy watching every nuance in SW1, they have missed something that folk outside can see clearly: the Left today is simply not credible.

189. If the real Margaret Thatcher had been like Meryl Streep's Iron Lady, I wouldn't have supported...
Last week I saw the film The Iron Lady. I regret to say it confirmed all my worst fears from having seen the trailer some time ago. This is primarily a film about an old lady suffering from dementia. The actress, Ms Streep, is well made up to resemble Margaret Thatcher in both old age and her younger years and has acquired a number of her gestures and movements as well as some entirely new to me.There are other people depicted in the film whom I did not recognise and some who were vitally important to her during her time as Prime Minister who did not appear at all.If you have seen, or intend to see this film, remember that it uses the name and reputation of Margaret Thatcher to sell tickets, but it is not about the Margaret Thatcher whom I knew and served in government. Above all, do not believe that the portrayal of Denis Thatcher is anything like that devoted, humorous, thoughtful and wise man. That is drawn for the same purpose.

190. Young people are going to bad universities to study subjects no employers want. This tragedy is...
Surprised to hear that more than 20,000 graduates from the year of 2011 were still unemployed six months after they graduated? We shouldn't be. This is a full-scale tragedy written, orchestrated and adapted for real life by the Government, and the victims are our young people. We need to see the figures that show employment numbers broken down to show the difference between the "new" universities, and Oxbridge or older, more established universities. We need the figures broken down also by degree subject. If they are, we start to see the true story: aspirational young people encouraged to go to universities that lack credibility to study subjects employers don't want. Result? Massive debt, wasted years and slapping hamburgers in an outlet where the manager joined McDonald's straight from school.

191. On green issues no one talks more 'crap' than David Cameron – Telegraph Blogs
"Get rid of all the green crap" David Cameron has told his aides. According to today's Sun, at any rate. I'm sure Lynton Crosby will be delighted – even if Downing Street has subsequently issued a careful statement saying that this doesn't sound like the kind of language the Prime Minister would use.So that's a non-denial denial then. But even if Cameron did issue such a directive, in slightly more prime ministerial terms, crap remains what, essentially, he was talking. Let us not forget that only last week Cameron was explicitly linking Typhoon Haiyan to "climate change."
