161. Sir Antony Jay: slash the BBC by two thirds! – Telegraph Blogs
The BBC's reporting of David Cameron's recent adventures in Europe has been a disgrace. Last night – following the example set by that very exemplar of quisling Europhile values the Today programme – the BBC's Ten O'Clock News managed to reiterate about half a dozen times its view that Britain had been left more "isolated" than ever by Cameron's eminently sensible decision not to sell his country's interests for a mess of pottage. To listen to Nick Robinson and co, you might actually have imagined that it was somehow a bad thing for Britain not to wish to shackle itself to the rotting corpse of the EU;

162. The British case for Mitt Romney – Telegraph Blogs
In 1660, some of the men who had ordered the execution of Charles I were themselves put to death, their corpses mutilated and strung up in public. A Royalist mob gathered at Tyburn, yelling angrily at the cadavers: ‘Enthusiasts! Enthusiasts!’The British have never been especially keen on enthusiasm, either in its modern sense, or in the older meaning of ‘seized by religious fervour’. Americans – ideological descendants, in many ways, of those regicides – differ from us perhaps more in this than in any other regard. When I took my seat in the Tampa convention hall with a group of MEPs, our Republican friends said: ‘You might be on camera, so try to behave like Americans: no eye-rolling’.

163. Liverpool Council spend £1.28 million a year on security for empty homes | Local Government
Channel 4 has been running a campaign as well as TV programmes about the number of empty homes in the country, The Great British Property Scandal. Among the shocking revelations was that Liverpool Council has an annual bill of £1.28 million for security on its empty homes. Why not sell them?

164. The 'Un-Credible Shrinking Man' broadcast: proof that Labour has gone insane – Telegraph...
Labour’s latest party political broadcast has just been uploaded on YouTube. It is a real broadcast, produced at considerable expense by a political party that aspires to be the government of this country. And it proves the Labour Party is slowly but surely going clinically insane. It’s not just the ludicrous caricature of the Conservatives – including a gratuitous dig at the late Baroness Thatcher. Or the infantile portrayal of Nick Clegg. Or the fact it seeks to treat the electorate like they’re sniggering schoolchildren. It proves conclusively that Labour is no longer serious about winning the next election. It has no serious strategy, or serious policy, or any intention of convincing the nation it is serious about governing.Instead the people who run it – or pretend to run it – are playing a game. They are living out a self-indulgent student fantasy in which they get to strike poses, and shout slogans, and scream “Toff!” at every passing Tory they see.

165. The Europhile CBI continues to be wrong about almost everything – Telegraph Blogs
The CBI, in its various incarnations, has managed to get virtually every big call wrong. In the 1920s, it wanted to go back to gold at the pre-war rate. In the 1930s, it was for appeasement. In the 1940s, it was often for nationalisation. In the 1950s it was for state planning. In the 1960s, it was for tripartite industrial relations. In the 1970s, it was for price controls. In the 1980s, it was for the ERM. In the 1990s it was for the euro. Now, its leaders trot out precisely the same discredited line in favour of EU membership. Britain mustn't put itself in the same position as Norway, argues John Cridland, the CBI Director General. Actually, I'd gladly swap our problems for those of Norway – the country the UN reckons the best place in the world to be born. Although Norway's relationship with the EU is not perfect, almost no one there wants to exchange it for full membership.

166. How Wisconsin and Alabama just helped save the world – Telegraph Blogs
From my poolside in Puglia I was going to do you an amusing post about The Archers. I expect it would have been very funny. But sadly we shall never know. That's because I want instead to draw your attention to two important stories from the US which, I suspect, will have far greater impact on the world than even Nigel Pargeter's murder (by politically correct BBC harridans) ever did. I refer to Governor Scott Walker's victory in Wisconsin and an equally important but perhaps less well-publicised victory won in the Alabama house and senate over the UN's malign and insidious Agenda 21. (H/T Darren Nelson and Barry Corke).Walker's victory has been thoroughly and expertly analysed by my estimable colleague Tim Stanley. For the benefit of those readers who a) find US politics remote, weird or dull and/or b) think Walker was one of the Brothers responsible for The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More before going a bit weird on his solo albums, I'd just like to reiterate that this is a story of significance to all of us.

167. Boris Johnson in secret talks to make shock comeback in the Commons and take on Cameron ahead of...
London Mayor Boris Johnson could make an early Commons comeback after multi-millionaire Tory MP Zac Goldsmith offered to sacrifice his safe seat. The sensational prospect of an early Commons comeback by Boris Johnson loomed last night after a top Tory MP offered to sacrifice his seat for him to take on David Cameron.Multi-millionaire rebel Zac Goldsmith has told Mr Johnson that if the Prime Minister goes ahead with a third runway at Heathrow he will resign his safe seat in Richmond, South-West London, and let the London Mayor contest it in a by-election. The bombshell proposal was put to Mr Johnson when the two men met for secret talks last week to plot how to kill off Government moves to expand Heathrow.

168. Official: Great Barrier Reef doing just fine – Telegraph Blogs
I have just been snorkelling over the Great Barrier Reef. (Not all of it: it's 1,600 miles long). And I can now officially confirm that it's doing just fine. The fish and corals are in excellent shape. Not one of the bits I investigated showed any signs of a) overheating due to global warming, b) dissolving due to ocean acifidication or c) collapsing in despair at man's selfishness, greed and refusal to amend his lifestyle.Who'da thunk, eh?But this didn't, of course, stop our snorkel guide slipping in global warming, as a matter of course – a bit like when in the old days Christians used to say grace before dinner – into his introductory talk. Nor did it stop the craft on which we travelled, spewing, to the reef bearing signs from the Queensland park authorities claiming that ocean acidification is real. Why do they expose us to this alarmist drivel?

169. Allotments are a blessing to everyone - socialist councillors are not | Telegraph Blogs
Our own commitment to cultivation is not, thus far, great: I planted six onion bulbs in a large pot, and proceeded to drown them. Keith has fared better. His two tomato plants now bear 22 potential fruit (he counts them every evening). There was also a chilli plant on the kitchen windowsill, which produced one tasteless, chilli-shaped object, before withering. So it’s fair to say that we’re not natural gardeners. That meagre bounty – two tomato plants, in a bag – stands in our back garden. But if we didn't have a garden, or if we were suddenly to come over all Tom and Barbara (though we're more Margo and Jerry, really, what with our pulsating fear over the curse of socialism in the Algarve), but if we were to throw off corporate life, and turn instead to a life of vegetable self-sufficiency, I know what we'd do. We'd apply for a plot on the Barnet allotments.

170. The euro crisis: stand by for years of slow, wretched decline – Telegraph Blogs
What is a recession supposed to look like? The question is prompted by the number of Britons who, returning copper-tinted from the Algarve or the Mediterranean, remark that Greece/Spain/Portugal seems to be functioning perfectly well. What exactly were you expecting? Mad-Max-style civilisational breakdown? In even the deepest crises, normal things take place. As a teenager…

171. T-shirts looking forward to Margaret Thatcher's death don't demean her: they demean the Left | Telegraph Blogs
Well that was smart. The TUC – presumably by accident rather than design (they’re not returning my calls on the subject) – has allowed its annual congress to establish the Brighton franchise of the chic new "Die Thatcher, Die!" clothing range. For those not up to speed with this latest fashion craze, renowned international couturier The Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre has unveiled its autumn collection. And its catalogue contains a couple of cheeky little numbers, including a T-shirt with a picture of Margaret Thatcher’s spitting image puppet, and the words “Hey ho the witch is dead”, and another T-shirt featuring a white cross with “Thatcher” across it and the slogan: “A generation of trade unionists will dance on her grave”....the damage is done, and we know what happens next. First there is a cry of synthetic outrage from elements of the Right. “This sick merchandise tells you all you need to know about some in the union movement – baseless, cowardly and utterly devoid of morality,” said Tory MP...

172. You're not happy about a Fiscal Union? FU! – Telegraph Blogs
Sure enough, Cleggie is already trying to reverse the substance of Friday morning's deal, arguing that the eurozone states should be able to use EU structures and mechanisms rather than having to establish their own institutions. This would, of course, make a mockery of the veto, and I can't imagine David Cameron would countenance it – although, as I argue in the MoS, our Brussels apparatchiki will work frantically to convince him.Britain's strategic aim should be to provide for the development of two parallel bodies: the European Union (EU) and the Fiscal Union (FU). The former should be allowed to subside gradually into an amplified free trade area, while the latter becomes a federation. I suspect that, at that stage, the numbers would be far more evenly matched than 26 to one.FU is, indeed, precisely the attitude that many eurozone leaders seem to take to their voters. You're unhappy about the loans-for-austerity racket? FU! You'd prefer a devaluation to endless poverty? FU! You don't see why your business has to close so that the euro can hold together? FU!

173. When the crash comes, blame the half-educated economics graduates who led us there –...
For the better part of a decade, bearded survivalists holed up in places like Idaho have been telling us that paper money is finished, and that we should buy precious metals, while sophisticated economics graduates who write for the FT have been insisting that gold is massively over-valued. It turns out that, if you'd listened to the snaggle-toothed mountain men, you'd have made a packet. Yet again, the 'experts' got it dismally wrong.Supporters of Keynesian economics often engage in an unconscious intellectual preening. When I blog about Europe or localism or Tory politics, the negative reaction in the comment thread is usually along the lines of 'Shaddap, Hannan, you utter ****.' But whenever I touch on our debt levels, the comments are much likelier to focus on my…

174. War, debt, drunkenness, a broken nation: the real legacy of Tony Blair – Telegraph Blogs
Fifteen years ago, the carefully stage-managed crowds cheered as their hero arrived in Downing Street to take office on a wave of hopes for a better Britain. What was his legacy? What did Tony Blair achieve? Debt, war, ignorance, welfare dependency, social division. The crushing burden of debt has held back our wealth creating industries, left us with higher taxes, lower pensions, higher prices, and fewer jobs

175. Wind turbines ARE a human health hazard: the smoking gun - Telegraph Blogs
How much more dirt needs to come out before the wind industry gets the thorough investigation it has long deserved? The reason I ask is that it has now become clear that the industry has known for at least 25 years about the potentially damaging impact on human health of the impulsive infrasound (inaudible intermittent noise) produced by wind turbines. Yet instead of dealing with the problem it has, on the most generous interpretation, swept the issue under the carpet – or worse, been involved in a concerted cover-up operation.

176. Cigarettes in Plain Packaging: | Roger Helmer MEP
I continue to be very angry at Andrew Lansley’s intrusive and prescriptive approach to cigarette packaging. He says that he wants a consultation on the issue, but at the same time he supports the “Plain Packaging Protects” campaign.I object first because there is no evidence that this statement is true. A cigarette from a plain pack is no safer or more dangerous than one from a branded pack. He is assuming that plain packs will reduce consumption, but I have seen no evidence to support the idea.I object secondly because of his hypocrisy and cynicism in pretending to call for a consultation when he has clearly made up his mind.
