321. HOUSE ENERGY SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIR; EPAs CARBON PLAN ILLEGAL, HIJACKS GRID - Tea Party Nation
Washington, D.C. – The Science, Space, and Technology Committee today convened ahearing to examine the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) approach to implementing a far-reaching plan to reduce U.S. carbon emissions. Chairing the hearing, Energy Subcommittee Chairman Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) made the following statement.Chairman Lummis: “Today, we examine one of the most sweeping regulatory proposals in America’s history. The EPA is continuing its regulation rampage, attempting to take control of our nation’s electric system without any legal or scientific justification.“The EPA’s “Clean Power Plan” reaches well beyond just the regulation of power plants. The EPA wants to control the entire system, right down to the amount of electricity Americans use in their homes.

322. World's poor need grid power, not just solar panels - opinion - 04 August 2014 - New Scientist
Small-is-beautiful electricity can't power a way out of poverty; big energy is either dirty or uneconomic. Time for some new ideasTHIS year the World Bank approved a big grant for the latest phase of the world's largest hydroelectric scheme. The Inga 3 dam is part of a megaproject on the Congo river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). With construction due to begin next year, the project could one day deliver twice as much electricity as the world's current largest power station, the Three Gorges dam in China.

323. Conservative MP's secret 'guerrilla' plot with Labour's Ed Balls to make sure EU budget vote was ambushed | Daily Mail
A rebel Tory MP had secret talks with Ed Balls as part of the plot to defeat David Cameron in Wednesday's shock Commons vote on the EU budget crisis.Harwich MP Douglas Carswell discussed the rebellion with a member of Shadow Chancellor Mr Balls's entourage to make sure the rebel Tory-Labour ambush was carried out with deadly effect. The two men discussed in detail how to dovetail their political guerrilla warfare tactics and prevent the Conservative leadership gaining vital time needed to scupper it.The result was a catastrophic 13-vote defeat for Mr Cameron as 53 rebel Tories, mainly Right-wingers, buried their lifelong disdain for Labour and teamed up with Ed Miliband and Ed Balls to humiliate the Prime Minister. The secret talks between Mr Carswell and Mr Balls were compared by one person who was involved as 'the equivalent of a military deception operation'.According to the source, the aim was to enable Mr Balls to break cover first and convince his own MPs that Labour was leading the attack on the Government. In fact it was dreamt up by a small group of Conservative rebels, including Mr Carswell, Mark Reckless and Mark Pritchard.

324. Ed's living wage 'is a disaster for jobs' says former Blair aide behind minimum wage | Mail...
Ed Miliband’s plan to encourage businesses to pay a ‘living wage’ would put 300,000 young people out of work, a former aide to Tony Blair warned yesterday. The Labour leader will today announce that he would offer tax breaks to firms who pay their employees £8.80 an hour in London and £7.65 in the rest of the UK – far higher than the minimum wage, which is £6.31 an hour. But John McTernan, who helped Mr Blair introduce the minimum wage in 1999, warned yesterday that the policy would be a disaster for jobs and hit young people particularly hard.

326. Youth unemployment rises 450k in the time it takes 600k migrant workers to flock to UK | Mail...
Migrant workers from the EU are keeping young Britons out of jobs, new figures suggest.Campaign group Migration Watch UK said statistics released today show the number of migrants working in the UK who were born in Eastern Europe rose by 600,000 since the so-called A8 countries joined the EU in May 2004 while youth unemployment rose by almost 450,000 in the same period.Sir Andrew Green, the campaign group's chairman, said it would be 'a very remarkable coincidence if there was no link at all between them'.Migrants from the A8 countries - Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - 'have tended to be disproportionately young, well-educated, prepared to work for low wages and imbued with a strong work ethic', he said.Youth unemployment in the UK increased from 575,000 in the first quarter of 2004 to 1,016,000 in the third quarter of 2011, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.Over the same period, the number of workers from the A8 grew by 600,000.

I hope you’re ready for “The Dollar Menu” to become the “The Dollar Thirty-Eight Menu”.When things on the dollar menu are $1.38, who does that hurt the most? Poor people. That’s what liberals just don’t understand. They say things that make you feel good then implement policy that is doomed for failure.

331. Why is the US economy doing better than the UK? | John Redwood's Diary
All the so called neo-Kenysians are out and about telling us that the US is recovering well owing to further fiscal stimulus, whilst the UK is said to be faltering thanks to a government “cutting too far and too fast”. It is time to debunk this nonsense.Let me start by saying I think Keynes was a great economist. His insights into the creation of money, inflation, and growth are important. All mainstream political parties are heir to his traditions in several respects. All agree that the state should borrow to offset a fall in demand in a recession. All agree that there needs to be controls over money and credit creation with a monopoly money system organised by the state. The Central Bank has to decide on overall levels of money and credit. They do not, however, tend to follow his precepts in a boom, when they ought to be asking the state to control spending and repay debt.

333. Unpalatable truth about food banks the Left finds so hard to swallow: Political football and...
Growing food banks charity the Trussell Trust has been accused by Iain Duncan Smith of 'political messaging' and 'scare-mongering', writes STEVE BIRD.When the organisers of a charity food bank in Coventry received their 10,000th client, they held a ceremony during which the city’s mayor handed a free bag of shopping to a man considered to be the most deserving recipient.Amid a ripple of applause from the crowd of officials, a grinning Darren Harvey stepped forward to receive the emergency supply of food, which was enough to feed him and his family for about three days. The event was intended to highlight the plight of poor people who cannot afford to buy basic foodstuffs, a situation the Left has blamed on welfare cuts and described as a ‘national crisis’. It was filmed by a BBC TV team as part of a documentary called Britain’s Hidden Hungry.

334. Want a Tory victory in 2030? Fight to turn the North East blue | Conservative Home
We’ve covered the habits and fallacies of the Miserablist Left on ConservativeHome before – here and here, for example. The most glaring example (quite literally) is Ed Balls, whose squirming in the face of good economic news has been a joyful sight to behold. But it’s important to remember the pessimistic trend extends beyond the Shadow Chancellor and, indeed, beyond the bounds of the Labour Party. The Guardian presented a monumental example of miserablism at the weekend, declaring the North East of England, which includes my home town, to be “teetering on the brink” of becoming “Britain’s Detroit”.The article provoked a furious response from across the North East – understandably, given that it had been rubbished simply in order to make an attack on “Tory cuts”, regardless of the truth of the matter or the harm it might do to the already under-rated North East. Those of us who grew up there spend a good portion of our time correcting people’s misapprehensions, which are largely borne of 30-year-old news footage and re-runs of Our Friends In The North. It’s a source of eternal frustration that whole tracts of the country think of smoking slag-heaps and strikers when the reality includes the nation’s most beautiful countryside, Granger’s glorious sandstone architecture, massive redevelopment and car plants which turn out more vehicles each year than the entirety of Italy.

335. The dirty secret of Britain's power madness: Polluting diesel generators built in secret by foreign companies to kick in when there's no wind for turbines - and other insane but true eco-scandals | Daily Mail
Thousands of dirty diesel generators are being secretly prepared all over Britain to provide emergency back-up to prevent the National Grid collapsing when wind power fails. And under the hugely costly scheme, the National Grid is set to pay up to 12 times the normal wholesale market rate for the electricity they generate. One of the main beneficiaries of the stopgap plan is the Government itself, which stands to make hundreds of millions of pounds by leasing out the capacity of the generators in public-sector property including NHS hospitals, prisons, military bases, police and fire headquarters, schools and council offices. But the losers will be consumers who can expect yet further hikes in their electricity bills in the name of ‘combating climate change’.The scheme is expected to cost £1 billion a year by 2015, adding five per cent to energy bills.

336. Paper: Climate Policy Models Are 'Useless' | The Daily Caller
Models used to craft climate models are “close to useless” when it comes to crafting policies to combat global warming, according to a recent paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.Economist Robert Pindyck writes that integrated assessment models (IAMs) used to craft global warming policy “have flaws that make them close to useless as tools for policy analysis” and trick government officials “into thinking that the forecasts the models generate have some kind of scientific legitimacy.”
