97. David Ruffley MP: The 50p tax is bad for Britain. Scrap it. Comment
The 50p rate proves “we’re all in this together”. Or so leading modernisers will have you believe. But they’re wrong, as five hundred entrepreneurs reminded us in a letter in today’s The Daily Telegraph. They urge George Osborne to abolish the 50p top rate of income tax in this month’s Budget.Waiting until 2014 or 2015 to scrap it is risky. If the Chancellor leaves it that late, the 50p rate will have done still more damage to the economy. It could also become a political football at the General Election. Much better to get it out of the way now.It is true that some opinion polls last year showed that the 50p tax rate had public support. But would the public be quite so supportive if they were reminded that without the drive and energy of successful entrepreneurs, jobs and growth decline?Labour introduced the 50p rate in 2010, largely for class war reasons in their desperate search for votes. George Osborne, boxed in, judged that he could not be seen to cut tax for “the rich” given that his priority was to build support for reducing the biggest deficit in British peacetime history. But he must now listen to the 500 entrepreneurs against 50p as he constructs this month’s Budget. Whilst this most political of Chancellors will be concerned about “the optics” of cutting tax at a time of national austerity, he has already laid the ground for scrapping the 50p tax rate.

98. Alex Deane: A vitally important speech by David Davis Comment
For months - since very soon after the formation of the Coalition, in fact - many respected Conservative voices have been saying in private that not enough is being done to cut government spending and encourage growth. Yesterday, that view was given a forceful public voice in a speech by David Davis for the CPS.Alas online it lacks the compelling slides with which DD accompanied his presentation at the ICAEW conference hall (which, by the way, was packed), but I urge you to read it - for both the intellectual rigour and honesty of its message, and for the remarkably direct soundbites.

99. Why should broke Britain bankroll immigrant spongers? – Telegraph Blogs
Out there, in the world right now, not in lunatic asylums but on the streets with actual voting rights, are angry, quasi-articulate people who sincerely believe that:1. Mentioning Roma in any vaguely critical context puts you one step away from endorsing Hitler's death camps2. Criticising welfare tourism means you're heartless and probably a Nazi3. The British exchequer is a source of limitless bounty. If there are any poor people out there in the world, it is entirely right and proper that they should partake of its largesse. To argue otherwise is morally indefensible.I wonder how these people will respond to today's Telegraph scoop that there are 370,000 economic migrants currently claiming the dole in Britain.

107. The government thinks it’s about us, we think it’s about them
Most people want their government to collect sensible amounts of tax and to provide decent services for the money. They wish the government to uphold the law against criminals. They think most our problems are ones coming from too much law, not too little, or from imperfect enforcement of laws we do have against criminal activity.Modern bureaucratic government seems to think most of the problems come from the actions of the people.Health officials want people to be less fat, to eat a better diet, drink less alcohol, take more exercise. They may be right that this would make people healthier, and delay their time with doctors and hospitals to older age. Meanwhile the public wants the NHS to be there for them whatever they do. Some resent the taxes and regulations used to try to change our lifestyles.More resent the work of the green police.

111. Christopher Snowdon: Plain packaging proposals for cigarettes may actually harm the public...
The coalition of state-funded anti-smoking groups have started revving up their trusty public relations machine for yet another legislative campaign. While their temperance counterparts concentrate on minimum pricing, the anti-tobacco lobby has its heart set on ‘plain packaging’. The packaging will, in truth, be anything but plain. If we are to follow Australia’s example—where a plain packaging law has been passed, but not yet introduced—cigarette packs will show a very large photo of a tumour or corpse against a green-brown background. The White Album, this is not.

112. Roger Helmer MEP: The Man in Whitehall says no to local opposition to windfarms Comment
On January 9th I wrote a piece about the proposed wind-farm overlooking the historic battlefield of Naseby and I undertook to write to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP. I also promised to share his reply with you. I attach it below. Clearly Mr. Pickles is a very busy man, so he referred my letter to Sir Michael Pitt, Chief Executive of The Planning Inspectorate.Sir Michael writes with commendable courtesy. His mastery of mandarin-speak is exemplary. It is worthy of the BBC’s “Yes Minister”, so much so that I wonder if the BBC consulted him on the script. That being so, and in the interests of clarity and the avoidance of doubt, let me offer you my paraphrase in more earthy and vernacular terms. He is saying, in effect, that we local oiks, Luddites and Nimbies can do whatever we want, but it won’t make any difference and he won’t care a scrap.
