82. One million useless solar panels - JoNova
Only five years ago Australia had a mere 20,000 solar systems installed on homes across the country. Now thanks to a Gonzo-Big-Daddy-Government we have over one million solar systems, almost all of them producing electricity that could have been made for something like a fifth of the price with coal. The Clean Energy Regulator spins it as though wasting money on inefficient equipment in the hope of reducing world temperatures is a good thing for Australia.

83. Roger Helmer MEP: Climate alarmism is falling out of favour in the rest of the world - but...
We might as well hang up a sign in the airports: "Closed for Business". While EU leaders pontificate about prioritising growth and jobs, we have climate mitigation policies in place that massively raise energy costs and force industries, companies, jobs and investment out of the EU altogether. In the name of environmentalism, we force them to go off-shore, to jurisdictions with lower environmental standards. It's a whole spectrum of energy-intensive businesses. Metals like steel and aluminium -- a highly energy-intensive industry. Cement. Chemicals. Glass. Paper and wood-processing. We talk about "rebalancing the economy towards manufacturing" and in the next breath propose "a floor price for carbon". Then we wonder why industry sails off into the sunset. I have been writing about this for years, but it was brought home to me with added force at a dinner-briefing last night hosted in Brussels by EUROFER, the European Steel Association. Normally at these events there are speeches/briefings/presentations followed by a debate with interventions from the floor. In this case, after a couple of speeches, attention turned to dinner and the debate never happened. My carefully-crafted question was condemned to languish un-asked, so I'll ask it now.

84. I'm sorry to say it, but my old school chum isn't PM material (Boris Johnson on Ed Milliband) - Telegraph
The party leader and I go back a long way, but the time has come for a few political truths, writes Boris Johnson. They say old school ties are strong in this country, but there is a limit. Yes, it is perfectly true that I was at the same school as the party leader, and yes, we went to the same university. I have absolutely nothing against him personally — he has a very nice wife, after all, and a good degree (admittedly in PPE). But the time has come to say it loud and clear: he is emerging as a total disappointment; and as leader of a major political party, he looks to me like a drip of the first order.I refer of course to Edward Miliband. Yup, Ed and I were at the same superb school – Primrose Hill Primary School, Camden, a coincidence that he is curiously disinclined to mention – and it is only with great reluctance that I now break the ancient ties of fiefdom and fealty that knit one Old Primrosean to another. And in case anyone was for a second bamboozled by my cunningly phrased introduction, let me say now that the other old schoolmate/party leader, David Cameron, is not only doing a bang-up job on most fronts (apart from Latin – Georgic in my room by lock-up, please) but will be re-elected, for reasons I am about to explain, with an absolute majority.

85. Councillor Gareth Elliott: A bigger private sector would do more for poorer children Comment
The privatisation of national assets has always been a highly politically charged topic. Harold Macmillan famously likened Margaret Thatcher’s programme to “selling off the family silver”. Yet for all the scaremongering, the result has generally been a huge success. The UK’s car industry has gone from basket case to one of the most efficient in the world. Nobody today would seriously call for the renationalisation of BT, which is spending over £2bn on super-fast broadband, whilst our flag carrier, BA, is still a national champion; in fact, it is one of the most successful airlines in the world. The experience of privatisation is therefore one of success.Yet there are still areas where private enterprise cannot tread, and not because it couldn’t succeed, but because it is politically unpalatable. Education is one such example, yet it is potentially an area where the private sector could really make a difference.

86. Robert Halfon MP: Let’s give White Van Conservatism wheels – scrap the 3p fuel tax rise!
On Tuesday, I tabled a Private Members Bill on petrol prices, supported by many other Conservative backbenchers, as well as MPs from Northern Ireland, and Scotland. (You can see an extract in the short video above.) The idea behind it was very simple: that fuel tax should be crystal clear to motorists. In essence, this would sweep away the complex regulations about what fuel garages can and cannot put on their till receipts, and replace them with one simple rule. That whenever you fill up the family car, the till receipt should say in black and white how much fuel duty, VAT, and petrol you have paid. It should also say how much is actually being spent on Britain’s roads. Simple. This would make the tax system more honest; it would be a big deterrent against any future tax-rises; and it would add pressure on the oil companies to be fair.

88. Joe Armitage: On entrepreneurship and tax cuts, David Cameron is another Margaret Thatcher | ConservativeHome
Joe Armitage is Chairman of Medway Conservative Future and Deputy Chairman (Political), Rochester East Conservatives. He’s also on a gap year interning for a Conservative MP. Follow him on Twitter. On the one hand, some people claim that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher are cut from the same cloth. The Leader of the Opposition even went so far as to say Cameron was a “Child of Thatcher.” On the other, there are those within the Conservative Party who believe that David Cameron is not a conservative, that his policies are centrist and that he has abandoned conservatism: this, to me, is nonsense. The policies of the Coalition Government have produced encouraging results such as job and business creation, but they’ve also brought about an atmosphere which fosters growth, and it’s inevitable that the green shoots will appear.Ed Miliband recently told the Daily Telegraph that “Thatcher created an era of aspiration". It’s true, she did - but I also believe in decades to come, it will be said of Mr Cameron that he, too, is responsible for creation an era of aspiration. When you look at the mission of Lady Thatcher’s government and compare that mission to that of David Cameron’s government, there are many similarities. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting hard work, self-determination and expunging Britain’s dependency culture. That is also true of Lady Thatcher’s aim of self-reliance, individualism and rolling back the state in accordance with negative freedom. When you look at the policies of this Government and compare them to Lady Thatcher’s, one can see that the challenges are very similar challenges. In 1979, when the first Thatcher Government came to power, the highest rate of corporation tax was 52% and the highest Income Tax threshold was a hernia-inducing 83%. These levels of tax were discoursing growth, aspiration and self-development. When David Cameron’s government came to power, corporation tax was 28% and income tax was at 50% - obviously far lower than under Callaghan but too high nonetheless.

89. Roger Helmer MEP: Camborne are wrong about the single currency. Our recovery begins when the...
Cameron and Osborne have a clear line on the eurozone. While they think the €uro was a misguided venture, and they don’t want to join -- ever -- the argument goes that a disorderly breakdown of the €uro would be a disaster for the UK economy, and that the eurozone is such a key trading partner for the UK that any recession there would cause us huge damage.Based on this analysis, Cameron makes encouraging noises about “Big bazookas”, and (despite the Veto) about the UK’s moral support for efforts to save the €uro. And he is prepared to cough up billions of British tax-payers’ money for the IMF, knowing that much of it will be diverted to “Saving the €uro”.I think this analysis is fundamentally flawed. For a start, I don’t believe that the €uro can be saved, and I believe that attempts to do so are just throwing good money after bad.

90. Roger Helmer MEP: When they tell you that half our international trade is with the EU, that’s...
I picked up an incoming Tweet this morning from my good friend and colleague Dan Hannan MEP. It reads: “Denis MacShane told me, didactically, that we sell more to Belgium than Brazil. That, Denis, is precisely our problem.”Dan makes an important point. The fact is that between 40 and 50% of Britain’s international trade is with the EU’s 26 (EU less UK). The exact figure is debatable, because of the Rotterdam effect and other technical problems with analysing the trade statistics. There is the standard, familiar Europhile interpretation of this simple fact. “50% of our trade” (they say) “is with the EU. This, by itself, justifies our membership, and means that the costs are worth it”. You will have spotted the errors in this statement. There is the implicit assumption that trade depends on membership (Not true: ask Norway or Switzerland). There is the nice round 50%, which is almost certainly exaggerated. And there is the failure to address the European Commission’s own estimates that the trade benefits of membership amount to around 1.8% of GDP, while regulatory costs amount to about 5.5% - three times higher.

91. The great recycling myth - The Spectator
My frail elderly mother has recently moved in with us in Epsom and in so doing has joined the 15 million people worldwide who spend their days sorting through rubbish. Mum, however, does not get paid $1 a day. She does it for nothing. This is because we now have five separate bins and every morning she and the other 10,000-plus members of Surrey’s army of housewives sort through their rubbish to make sure it all goes into the right one.I am of course describing the phenomenon known as kerbside recycling, and Epsom Council would like you to think that it is good for the environment. But my day job is raising money for environmental projects, including waste plants, and I know that kerbside recycling is all a big con to save the public sector money. Everybody involved in the waste industry knows this simple fact: all rubbish can be sorted much more efficiently by machines without the need for any human intervention.

94. Cutting the number of MPs.
I voted to reduce the number of MPs by 50 when it last came up, and am willing to do so again when the boundary review is complete. I read that some Lib Dems are no longer happy about this Coalition policy.I voted for it because I think public spending has to be reduced and it seemed like a good idea to start with a cut in Parliament, to show we can do more for less. We need to raise public sector produtivity across the board, so Parliament should show how.

95. Labour chief in social housing owns £1m home round the corner: Councillor branded a 'hypocrite' after buying property while staying on as housing association tenant
The leader of one of Ed Miliband’s flagship Labour councils was last night embroiled in a row over claims his family is still living in ‘social housing’ – even though he owns a £1 million house nearby.Julian Bell, head of Labour-run Ealing Council in West London, has been branded a ‘hypocrite’ after buying a five-bedroom property while staying on as a housing association tenant.Mr Bell, who is a fierce critic of Coalition cuts and has protested at housing shortages, is now facing demands to explain why part of his family is still in social housing seven years after he bought his home a few hundred yards away.
