65. Dominique Lazanski: Britain can't afford to filter content online at home, whilst promoting an...
David Cameron is putting his full support behind the Independent Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection (pdf) that proposes an opt-in mechanism for viewing pornography. Essentially there will be filtering of legal pornography unless a user requests otherwise. It is no surprise that I support all of the arguments against this idea. The unintended consequences of website filter will “risk damaging legitimate businesses and undermining cyber security while further perpetuating the myth that this is an easy technological solution to a complex problem” according to Nick Pickles of Big Brother Watch, and I completely agree. There is no end of legitimate technical reasons not to filter websites and such arguments are what ultimately brought down the SOPA bill in the USA earlier this year.

66. Labour caused our problems with energy prices and social mobility. Now they want to make them worse
The BBC/Guardianista Left seems to have become fascinated by the idea that the unpleasant squeeze on family budgets as pay rises lag behind prices could be magicked away by arm-twisting, strong arming or requiring, by law, employers to raise wages. Sadly they have forgotten, and would like the rest of us to forget, that it was the Blair-Brown-Balls-Miliband gang who ran up on behalf of us all the huge debts which faced George Osborne when he came into office in 2010. The debts are still there, indeed they have increased, and so too has the interest on them. That is why wages are lagging behind prices.

69. Robert Halfon MP: Conservatives should believe in good business, not big business - as the oil market shows
Today in Parliament, I will lead a debate in Parliament, urging the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Services Authority to investigate the oil market. This is for three reasons:Petrol and diesel have never been more expensive, despite a two-year freeze in fuel duty.Oil companies - we have proof - are stopping cheaper oil prices from getting to market. This hurts people on low incomes, who are filling up the family car.A professional oil trader has now given an explosive statement to my PetrolPromise.com website, explaining in detail how the oil-price is being rigged by speculators and banks........Now I want to see lower fuel taxes, too. I have always campaigned in Parliament - with the Sun, Times, Mail, Express, Telegraph, FairFuelUK, and others - for a cut in fuel duty. In the future, I will always urge the Government to reduce fuel duty if they can.But as Conservatives, we should believe in good business, not big business. If cartels and crony corporates are pushing up the cost of living, we should oppose them just as strongly as we oppose Labour’s vision of a centralised “Big State”.

71. Osborne throws the kitchen sink at Balls... and Balls throws it back at Osborne The Tory Diary
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown committed their party to Conservative spending plans when they fought the 1997 election. Their shrinking of the target at which their enemies could fire set the tone for the next 20 years, followed as it was by one of biggest landslide victories in British history. Voters, the orthodoxy held, are always fearful that Labour, once translated from opposition to Government, will raise taxes more than a Tory Government; and the Conservatives (once the same translation has happened) will cut spending more than a Labour Government.

72. If Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the FT is a free market newspaper, God help France – Telegraph...
Mon centre cède, ma droite recule, situation excellente, j'attaque. The lower he sinks in the opinion polls, the more pugnacious Nicolas Sarkozy becomes. His favourite target is Britain – specifically, free-market capitalism as he imagines it to be practised in Britain.Earlier today, in an especially bizarre outburst, he picked on the Financial Times. 'The FT, as they say in informed circles, has always defended the Anglo-Saxon model, considering the French incorrigible and that we would do better to align ourselves to the Anglo-Saxon model,' he said during a television debate. 'The FT has thought for many years that the solution for the world is that there should be no law. I think exactly the opposite.'There's nothing wrong with national stereotypes, Sarko, but get them right, death of my life and the sacred blue. The notion that the FT is a doctrinally capitalist newspaper is so far off the mark that it's hard to know where criticism should begin. Since at least the early 1980s, the FT has been a corporatist paper of the Centre-Left, occasionally pro-business, but never pro-market. It opposed Margaret Thatcher's economic reforms, taking its hostility so far that it was, in effect, the only British newspaper openly to regret her victory in the Falklands War. Never mind Tony Blair; it backed Neil Kinnock in 1992. It was the single strongest supporter of ERM membership. It loudly applauded the monetary splurge which followed the credit crunch.

73. Is Ed Miliband for or against a fuel crisis? - Telegraph
Nearly half of all Labour MPs are sponsored by Unite, the union which has called a strike of well-paid fuel tanker drivers. When fuel tanker drivers last went on strike, in 2000, Tony Blair feared it could cost him his job. He admitted afterwards that the speed with which the dispute escalated had taken him by surprise. The Coalition is not making the same mistake. With the Unite union still more than a week away from its threatened stoppage, contingency planning appears well advanced. The Government’s civil contingencies committee has met and military personnel are being trained to deliver fuel. Motorists have been sensibly advised by Downing Street to make sure they have full tanks for the Easter break, prompting accusations of scaremongering. This is one of those instances where the Government is damned if it does, damned if it doesn’t.David Cameron will be acutely aware that with the Tory party’s poll ratings falling after an unpopular Budget, the prospect of garages running out of petrol is hardly an appealing one. And as George Osborne warned yesterday, the impact on a struggling economy could be devastating. The political risks to the Government if the strike goes ahead are – as Mr Blair will testify – all too real. But perhaps even more vulnerable is Ed Miliband, the Labour leader. For this dispute will throw into sharp relief Labour’s unhealthy dependence on Unite. The union keeps Labour afloat financially. Between 2007 – when it was formed through the merger of Amicus and the TGWU – and the 2010 general election, it gave Labour just under £11 million. Nearly half of all Labour MPs are sponsored by Unite. In return it has a big say in the party’s policy-making. A former Labour general secretary has said: “It is absolutely fair to describe the Labour Party as the political wing of Unite.”

74. Labour Backed £4-a-Day Pay for Mentally Disabled - Guy Fawkes' blog
In 2003 the Labour government supported allowing some companies to pay people with mental health problems £4-a-day to man assembly lines. A government paper from when Patricia Hewitt was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, which argues that that some so-called “therapeutic work” should not qualify for the minimum wage.

75. Robert Halfon MP: Ed Miliband isn't talking about Disraeli's One Nation, and this presents Tories with a wonderful opportunity | ConservativeHome
I am one of those who believe that pessimism is a luxury that no Tory can allow himself. So, whilst we can watch Mr Miliband's speech and congratulate him for some political ingenuity — regarding his 'One Nation' clarion call — in practice this gives Conservatives a tremendous opportunity: a chance to reinvigorate the Big Society. For Labour, 'One Nation' still remains another way of saying “the State”. Looking at his speech closely, Mr Miliband argues for “collective action” through the mechanisms of the State. This has been the Socialist cry through the ages; alleviate poverty through redistribution using the levers of Government. He still is arguing for a social-democratic state that robs from the rich in order to give to the poor.Another thought: “One Nation” as expounded by Disraeli was intrinsically “Tory” — it spoke for tradition, not for its own sake, but because it provided an anchor of stability between the generations. For Labour, the '500 year old Oak Tree' is anathema because their view of “One Nation” means Year Zero.Instead of uniting, Mr Miliband's Year Zero seeks to divide. If you have inherited wealth (except, of course, if you come from Hampstead Liberal stock), if you went to a posh school, then automatically you are placed in the category of “undesirable”. An opening for class war — and an opening, too, to create an “internal enemy” — the actions of demagogues throughout the ages, and hardly the stuff of 'One Nation'.

77. James Wharton MP: How Labour and the LibDems filibustered my EU referendum bill last night
Yesterday was the first day of the Committee stage of my EU Referendum Bill. Having passed its second reading not long ago, I was keen to get it into committee and make progress. The sooner it is back before the Commons for Report and can hopefully get through to the Lords the better. Sadly, however, some of the Labour members of the committee, and its only Lib Dem (Martin Horwood) set out to delay progress as much as they could.

80. From Trumpmania to Euroscepticism: Revenge of the Plebs | Coffee House
The Third Wayists are quaking in their boots. The middle-class, middle-of-the-road technocrats who have dominated politics for the best part of three decades are freaking out. These people who bristle at anything ideological, are disdainful of heated debate, and have bizarrely turned the word ‘moderate’ into a compliment feel under siege. And no wonder they do, for on both sides of the Atlantic their very worst nightmare — a revenge of the plebs — is becoming flesh. You can see this sometimes clumsy but nonetheless forceful reassertion of pleb power in everything from Trumpmania to the staggering back to life of Euroscepticism — or what snooty moderates call ‘Europhobia’, because every point of view that runs counter to their own must be a mental illness, right?
