Ed Balls and Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander had to be ‘dragged apart’ when they almost came to blows during a blazing row, it was revealed last night.Former Cabinet Minister Tessa Jowell was forced to intervene, saying she feared the Labour rivals were about to get into a ‘fisticuffs’.The dust-up happened when the Shadow Chancellor and Mr Alexander clashed in a private room in the Commons over the party’s policy on Europe.

52. Deliberate, defamatory lies from the Mail on Sunday | Roger Helmer MEP
On June 1st, the Mail on Sunday published what purported to be a report on my interview with their Political Editor Simon Walters. In fact, the piece bore little or no relation to our interview, and appears to be simply a pre-cooked hatchet job, packed with deliberate and defamatory lies. I have written to Mr. Walters in the following terms.

53. The end of the peer show?
Every week when Parliament is in session the executive of the 1922 backbenchers committee meets to decide what to tell the Prime Minister about backbench attitudes and reactions to the government’s business. The full 1922 Committee also meets every Wednesday, where any Conservative MP can attend, and voice any criticism in the privacy of the meeting they wish.I have never before written about these meetings. They are best kept private. Sometimes they are unremarkable. Sometimes they express support for a Minister or a policy. Sometimes we summon a Minister to get a progress report or home in on problems that matter to us. The Chancellor comes for a consultation meeting with us before a budget when he is forming his measures. He comes after budget to report. The Prime Minister comes once a term to tell us how he sees things and to take our questions. Sometimes these meetings send tough messages, wanting change to what the government is doing or how it is behaving.

55. David Cameron in secret deal with Boris Johnson to woo voters | Mail Online
David Cameron has asked Boris Johnson to help ‘reach parts of the electorate other Tories can’t’ in secret talks on the general election campaign. The London Mayor – who yesterday appeared with Darcey Bussell on the South Bank in yet another slightly absurd photo opportunity – is understood to have agreed to play a leading role next year. The two men, seen as the Conservative Party’s biggest rivals, made their peace over lunch at the Prime Minister’s country residence, Chequers.

57. 'One Nation Labour' would ruin the country, just like Old and New Labour – Telegraph Blogs
Old Labour wrecked the economy in the 1970s and then collapsed (despite Jim Callaghan's brave stand against the far-Left union leaders) in the aftermath of the Winter of Discontent. Then, after wrecking the economy which Thatcher and Major had fixed in the 1980s and 90s, Blair did a runner leaving NuLabour and Brown to collapse in 2010. Now, as Cameron and Osborne, hampered by their Lib Dem partners, struggle with a mountain of debt left by the Blair/Brown debacle, One Nation Labour has been born. Its prescription for recovery is no different from that of Old Labour or NuLabour. The label on the bottle has been changed but the contents have altered very little.

58. Tony Lodge: More competition for Britain’s trains – but the concept still seems lost on the French
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has spoken for hard-pressed train passengers and those who want more choice. Their new study into the possibilities of greater competition between train operators is a revealing analysis of how and why there should be more on-track competition in a sector in which in just over 20 years a renaissance has taken place.Since privatisation in 1994, the number of annual passenger journeys has doubled to 1.6 billion. Smart ticketing and the internet have changed the way we plan our travel forever, and new rolling stock has and is slashing journey times so that rail is becoming much more competitive with air on the long distance high speed routes. But real choice at stations between operators and consequent downward pressure on fares remains poor.

59. The Conservatives should prepare for life after David Cameron - Telegraph
The 'modernisers’ now appear out of touch and have alienated many natural supporters, argues Iain Martin. If the Tory modernising movement has a godfather, it is Francis Maude. In the days before David Cameron and George Osborne were MPs, when Michael Portillo saw himself as the heir to Tony Blair, Mr Maude was the original advocate of “detoxifying” the Conservative Party. Out should go talk of immigration, opposition to the European Union, crime or tax cuts. In its place there would instead be an embrace of Notting Hill social liberalism, an acceptance of large parts of the Blair-Brown settlement and an abandonment of ties. How fitting that more than 10 years after Mr Maude began his crusade it should be remarks made by him last week about “kitchen suppers” with donors in Number 10, and foolish advice on stockpiling petrol, that have precipitated a new Tory identity crisis. In a poll published yesterday, 72 per cent of those questioned said that the Government is out of touch with ordinary voters, while only 17 per cent disagreed with that proposition.

61. New Labour brought back slums and illiteracy, betraying Old Labour's legacy – Telegraph...
It is not unusual these days to hear something dispiriting or annoying on the BBC’s Today Programme (although it is still compulsive listening) but I was unusually shocked to hear last week a reporter’s account of conditions in Slough. She had accompanied a inspector from the borough council tracking down unauthorised buildings from wooden sheds to substantial breeze block buildings in back gardens of mainly terraced houses. These were it seemed, rented by a new generation of Rachmans to people living with little or no access to washing or toilet facilities.

62. Gaddafi was killed by French secret serviceman on orders of Nicolas Sarkozy, sources claim | Daily Mail
A French secret serviceman acting on the express orders of Nicolas Sarkozy is suspected of murdering Colonel Gaddafi, it was sensationally claimed today. He is said to have infiltrated a violent mob mutilating the captured Libyan dictator last year and shot him in the head. The motive, according to well-placed sources in the North African country, was to stop Gaddafi being interrogated about his highly suspicious links with Sarkozy, who was President of France at the time.Other former western leaders, including ex British Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, were also extremely close to Gaddafi, visiting him regularly and helping to facilitate multi-million pounds business deals.

63. The Left has gone loopy | Telegraph Blogs
The polls have narrowed. Labour’s lead has evaporated to between 1 and 2 per cent. Miliband no longer looks like a PM in waiting, but like a Neil Kinnock tribute act. What’s going on?The Left has gone loopy, that’s what. It’s not me saying it, but what thousands of voters seem to be telling the pollsters each week. Westminster watchers are so busy watching every nuance in SW1, they have missed something that folk outside can see clearly: the Left today is simply not credible.
