161. Archbishop Sentamu's real offence in the eyes of his nasty critics is that he sticks firmly to...
The public debate about the succession to the post of Archbishop of Canterbury brought to my mind an incident some years ago in the days of the NuLab government, when I derived some constructive amusement from my work on the Opposition back benches. As I walked up the stairs from the Members’ entrance to the House, one of the more light-heated of the bishops fell into step with me, and we exchanged greetings before he cheerily asked me: “What mischief are you up to today, Lord Tebbit?”

163. Ed Miliband promises to break up the banks by law as he tries to convince doubtful voters he could be Prime Minister | Daily Mail
Britain's biggest banks would be broken up by law under a Labour government, Ed Miliband has warned as he unveiled a raft of ideas which he says are needed to stop consumers being ripped off by big business. As the Labour conference begins in Manchester today, Mr Miliband threatened to forcibly ring fence high street banks from their high-risk investment arms if they fail to go further and faster with reforms designed to prevent a repeat of the 2007 crash. While Labour is ahead in the polls, Mr Miliband's personal ratings still lag behind those of David Cameron.

165. The Chancellor's medicine may be harsh. But Ed Balls would be economic poison | Mail Online
George Osborne has many enemies. Something about the Chancellor of the Exchequer exasperates people even when he tries to be nice, as he did during moments of his Autumn Statement yesterday. After telling the nation that he is cutting corporation tax, increasing investment allowances for small business and scrapping the scheduled 3p increase in fuel duty, he said: ‘We’re all in this together.’ Voters could be heard jeering as far off as Colwyn Bay.It’s not his fault, but most of his life has been financed not from his earnings like the vast majority of the population, but instead from the family fortune. George Osborne may occasionally catch a cold like the rest of us, but he is rash to pretend he knows from experience what it is like to struggle to pay a mortgage. The Chancellor’s core message yesterday was brutally honest and inevitably bleak. He restated his conviction that Britain is on the right course back to economic health, but then had to acknowledge it is taking longer than he had hoped to get there. He sped through a list of numbers — financial figures which are incomprehensible to most of us — before declaring that the national debt will only start falling in 2016 rather than 2015 as previously announced, and then only if a lot of other factors go to plan. Most of his policy changes tinkered with small amounts of money which will provide marginal incentives for economic growth. They will have little or no effect on businesses or industrial behaviour, but are the only carrots the Chancellor can offer when he has so little money to spend. He sat down looking like an apostle who has announced that the Second Coming is indefinitely postponed, and waited for the Pharisees to start throwing stones. But then Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls rose to his feet — and almost immediately got his tongue tied up in them. Instead of telling the Commons that public debt has risen, he roused Tory derision by saying the opposite.

166. Cameron should scrap the Foreign Aid budget, not increase it – Telegraph Blogs
Yesterday I was on BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show sparring with Cristina Odone about Dave's mooted compulsory foreign aid levy on the British taxpayer. She was arguing – with some high level support from Lord Gummer – that it was a good thing, part of our moral obligation to the world, and really not that much money all things considered. I was arguing that, no, actually, £8 billion now (rising to £11.4 billion in 2015) is quite a lot of money and that in these dark economic times the very last thing our government ought to be doing is hosing down ungrateful foreigners with cash we haven't got.The biggest recipient of our foreign aid largesse is currently Pakistan to which over the next four years we will be sending a total of £1.4 billion. This is roughly the same amount that Pakistan has earmarked to spend on a new fleet of Chinese made submarines; these will go nicely with the two squadrons of Chinese J-10 fighters which Pakistan has also bought at a cost of $1.4 billion. So, in effect, our foreign aid donations are helping to underwrite the military expansion of the country which until recently was shielding the world's number one Islamist terrorist, organised the massacre in Bombay and is doing so much to fund the Taliban insurgency killing and maiming our forces in Afghanistan..........But though all these examples quite neatly expose the profligacy, political correctness and imbecilic incompetence of DFID what they also do is distract from the bigger picture. The real story – as I should have said on Jeremy Vine's show if only I'd had my wits about me and hadn't been so keen to major on the Ferris Wheel anecdote – is not that our Foreign Aid budget is grotesquely misspent (though of course it is) but that we shouldn't have a Foreign Aid budget at all.For chapter and verse on this I refer you to m'learned friend Dambisa Moyo, the Zambian-born, Harvard-educated author of Dead Aid. In her superb book, she explains how, far from helping the Third World, well-meaning aid packages from the West – such as the $1 trillion dollars spent in the last 50 years on aid for Africa – have only harmed it.

167. He presided over corrupt elections and smears. Yet Red Ed's picked this union dinosaur to clean...
Mired in allegations of dirty tricks, smear campaigns and trade unions acting unlawfully, you would have thought that Ed Miliband would choose someone with the incorruptible reputation of Mother Teresa to conduct an investigation into these damaging claims of skulduggery. But rather than opt for an independent figure with impeccable credentials for honesty and integrity, he has instead appointed a trade union dinosaur.Lord Collins of Highbury is the Labour Leader’s choice as the ‘trusted party figure’ to head his major review of the party’s historic links with the unions. But to veteran observers of the Labour Left and the union movement, it is another spectacular blunder. For Lord Collins is indelibly associated with some of the least auspicious moments in the Labour Party’s recent past.

So, the economy is growing. Recent surveys of activity are solid. Confidence is rising. Our crucial task is to make sure everyone who wants to work hard – in all parts of the country, in all sectors of our economy, have the chance to be part of the recovery. We hear too that Labour, having lost the argument on deficit reduction, have a newfound interest in living standards. It’s a vital subject. So let’s look at the debate on living standards, past present and future.

170. Robert Halfon MP: Yes, Labour messed up migration. But there's nothing unConservative in critising TESCO
So much for Labour and the recasting of immigration policy. Chris Bryant’s interview on Radio 4 Today was a car-crash, not just because mistakes were made in the pre-release (Kent instead described as the place where Tesco closed a Distribution Centre, rather than Harlow, Essex, being a prime example), but because most fair-minded people know why we are in this mess in the first place. The last Labour Government allowed de facto uncontrolled immigration, and grossly underestimated the amount of migrants who would come here - especially those from Eastern Europe. They also signed all the EU Directives that allowed big companies to hire agency workers on the cheap - in technical parlance, known as ‘The Swedish Derogation’.But behind the political posturing, there is a more serious point: the problem of big corporate juggernauts, and the way they treat their workers.

171. BRITAIN’S EU MEMBERSHIP: Cameron faces new EU Treaties and a referendum whether he likes...
Interrogation of the latest EU summit reveals a Coalition Europe policy facing total collapse: the Prime Minister’s veto had no effect whatsoever, the City wants to be part of the banking union now, and Britain’s rejection of further integration inevitably means Treaty renegotiation and at least one referendum by 2015. But whether full Union ever materialises remains severely in doubt, with tensions rising to fever pitch between Berlin and Athens, and Italo-Spanish bond yields rising inexorably. The distraction of Diamonds (and the Tories working 24/7 to disguise how the Libor Party is virtually a division of Central Office) has kept media and public attention away from Europe’s continuing slide into chaos for a week or so now. But the biggest thing coming to light is just how comprehensively David Cameron has misjudged the situation there – and shown himself to be comletely devoid of any power or influence.

175. Vote-storm union 'used corrupt Militant Tendency ploy' to take over Labour | Mail Online
Britain's biggest union was last night accused of using ‘corrupt’ Militant Tendency methods to create a ‘party within a party’ inside Labour – and to take over its MPs.The allegation came amid a row over claims Unite broke party rules to try to get its nominee picked as Labour’s candidate in Falkirk, Scotland. The union was accused of recruiting ‘rent-a-mob’ supporters in Falkirk to rig the selection process. And last night, Eric Joyce, who won the seat for Labour at the last Election, made new claims against the union. He said it was copying the tactics used by the extreme Left-wing Militant Tendency – which tried to infiltrate Labour 30 years ago. They are using the same entryist methods adopted by Derek Hatton’s Militant Tendency in the 1980s – except they have much more money, better contacts and powerful friends inside the Labour Party.
