369. That was no light touch regulation – that was wrong touch regulation
The way Labour and the BBC framed the debate yesterday about financial regulation was typical of the skewed view of the what is going on that now passes for public debate in this country. The Labour spokesman on Newsnight tried yet again to blame Margaret Thatcher for the crisis for “deregulating” the banks in 1986. If that policy was so wrong why did they not reverse it in 1997? If it was so bad, why weren”t the banks in financial trouble ten years later on the eve of Labour coming to power? Did they not notice that she kept in place strong regulation of capital and cash by the Bank of England, which worked? No bank over lent and overstretched in the way they have been doing this century because they were not allowed to. As Michael Fallon rightly pointed out, it was Gordon Brown who put in a new system of regulation in 1997. It was that system of regulation which failed to control the over expansion of bank activities with too little cash and capital in some cases to support them.

Michael Gove yesterday dropped the European Union from the school curriculum – as EU laws were blamed for helping to sink his flagship plans to scrap GCSEs.Pupils will no longer be required to learn about the organisation in geography lessons while citizenship classes will merely specify studying the UK’s ‘relations with the rest of Europe’.The move is part of the Education Secretary’s far-reaching overhaul of the curriculum for primary and secondary schools aimed at restoring knowledge and rigour and reversing a trend for politically-correct causes to creep into lessons.

The Cabinet's master of political black arts, Chris Huhne, has left a trail of victims in his wake. They include his own party leader Nick Clegg, Home Secretary Theresa May and, allegedly, his ex-wife Vicky Pryce. Now it is clear why he is so expert at hatching such cunning plans – he has been doing it for nearly 40 years. In 1973, as a long-haired 19-year-old student of Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Magdalen College, Oxford, he gave a witty masterclass for would-be political Machiavellis on how to 'stab' their rivals in the back.An article he penned for a university freshers' guide reeks of the cynicism for which Energy Secretary Mr Huhne, 57, has become renowned in Westminster. His guide for budding politicians said:'Stab' your foes when you get the chance.

374. The dirty secret of Britain's power madness: Polluting diesel generators built in secret by foreign companies to kick in when there's no wind for turbines - and other insane but true eco-scandals | Daily Mail
Thousands of dirty diesel generators are being secretly prepared all over Britain to provide emergency back-up to prevent the National Grid collapsing when wind power fails. And under the hugely costly scheme, the National Grid is set to pay up to 12 times the normal wholesale market rate for the electricity they generate. One of the main beneficiaries of the stopgap plan is the Government itself, which stands to make hundreds of millions of pounds by leasing out the capacity of the generators in public-sector property including NHS hospitals, prisons, military bases, police and fire headquarters, schools and council offices. But the losers will be consumers who can expect yet further hikes in their electricity bills in the name of ‘combating climate change’.The scheme is expected to cost £1 billion a year by 2015, adding five per cent to energy bills.

375. Ed Miliband removes admission from speech that Labour immigration policy left communities...
Ed Miliband is under fire on immigration after he dropped an admission that Labour’s open door policy had left communities across Britain ‘struggling to cope’.His spin doctors had briefed the media that he would admit that Labour’s failure to control immigration had damaged Britain and increased community tensions. He had been expected to say: ‘We did too little to tackle the realities of segregation in communities that were struggling to cope.’The frank admission led news bulletins on the BBC and newspaper websites for much of the day.But Mr Miliband then dropped it from his speech, merely repeating a vague acknowledgment that the party had made ‘mistakes’ on immigration when in Government.

377. From ferrets to fish...New EU laws that are ruining Britain | UK | News | Daily Express
THE merciless grip of Brussels on the lives of millions of Britons is laid bare today by the Daily Express.European Union meddlers have forced the UK to make more than 150 changes to laws, ranging from ferrets’ welfare, how fish is labelled to checks on air-conditioning units. The legislation, which was rubber-stamped by a powerless Parliament in Westminster, shows how the EU’s tentacles reach into every aspect of our lives from medicines to housing and transport, and from energy to the legal system. There was outrage last night at the revelations, which were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. Tory MP Peter Bone said: “We cannot do anything about this legislation. We cannot amend it, we are powerless to stop it. It is fundamentally undemocratic.”

384. Britain Is Getting More Dangerous. So Give Us Our Guns Back - Breitbart
Imagine a Britain in which we were all free to carry licensed firearms. Most of us can’t because, thanks to the pervasive cultural influence of organisations like the BBC, we’ve been brainwashed into thinking that this is the sort of thing only crazy Americans do; that it’s a matter of national pride that not even our policemen routinely carry guns; that there’s really nothing illiberal or embarrassing about the fact that since the handgun ban rushed through in the wake of the Dunblane massacre, even our once-world-beating Olympic pistol shooting team can only train abroad.
