296. Reply on Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
I recently posted the government statement of what they are doing about immigration because I know how important this issue is to many who read this site. Some of you were grateful and surprised by how much action the government is taking. Others cynically complained that it was all words, pointing out that over the last year there has still been a high level of entry.I have listened carefully to Ministers and talked regularly to them about what they are doing. I am quite sure they wish to control numbers, and are taking actions which they believe will do that in a fair and sensible way. They are well aware that so far the numbers have not reduced, but point out that it takes time to get each of these measures into effect and to ensure they are working well at each entry point into the country. They accept that the proof of their measures comes over the next year, when they expect to see results. They are of course ready and willing to examine other ways to achieve what they wish to achieve, especially if the numbers do not decline as they expect.

Handing the next Governor of the Bank of England powers over both interest rates and financial stability will put the whole economy in danger unless proper checks and balances are established, the former Chancellor, Alistair Darling, has warned. The Chancellor officially began the search for a successor to Sir Mervyn King last week by advertising for the role for the first time in history. The chosen candidate is expected to be named around the time of the Autumn Statement on December 5.However, George Osborne’s predecessor has urged the Government to strengthen the Bank’s governance structures to reflect the new powers or leave the country at risk of individual failings.

298. Gulp: Connecticut governor pushes back on chocolate milk ban | Fox News
A ban on chocolate milk may be too much for the governor of Connecticut to stomach. The state General Assembly earlier this week approved nutrition legislation that threatened to remove chocolate milk from public schools. But, drawing a line in the sand in the nanny-state debate, Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Friday that on the matter of lactose legislation -- he is intolerant.Studies indicate that overall milk consumption plummets by at least 35 percent when chocolate milk is eliminated from school menus, Heidi Harkopf of the New England Dairy and Food Council told The Hartford Courant.Like its plain counterpart, flavored milk is a rich source of calcium, protein, vitamin D, vitamin A, potassium and niacin. Each eight-ounce serving of plain or flavored milk provides 300 mg of calcium, as much as one-fourth of the daily calcium requirement for children, according to the National Dairy Council.

299. The Maggotdrowners Forum - There's some real idiots out there
Just saw an add for a dogs trust which rescues abandoned dogs they say if you sponsor one of these dogs it will write to you and send photographs of its progress, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD ABANDON A DOG THAT CAN WRITE AND IS A SKILLED PHOTOGRAPHER?Animal charities irritate me. Rspca.. Fair enough. Why we give to charties that recsue rodents and god knows what else when there's people still dying of a myriad uncured diseases, sleeping rough, being abused etc is beyond me.RSPCA is one that I'd avoid like the plague. I know several dog breeders who stipulate that should the new owners of a puppy be unable to keep it, it should be returned to the breeder for rehoming. On sevral occasions dogs have ended up with the RSPCA and they won't return them to the breeder. There are a fair few of their employees and supporters who are anti-angling and I know of other instances where they have caused well looked after dogs to be removed and the owners taken to court.

301. After l'affaire Jimmy Carr, Left and Right should agree on flatter, fairer, simpler taxes...
In a speech to Politeia in 2004, Oliver Letwin, then Shadow Chancellor, made a simple but brilliant observation. The complexity of a nation’s tax system, he said, was every bit as damaging to competitiveness as the overall level of tax. It’s true. The more convoluted the tax code becomes, the more time we have to take off work to comply with it. Tolley’s Tax Handbook is now 11,500 pages long, twice what it was when Gordon Brown became Chancellor, and the number of tax lawyers has increased commensurately. There isn’t a small business in the land that doesn’t need to employ an accountant.

303. Rail's high-speed future: Fast link for UK's biggest cities will get green light | Mail Online
The biggest rail project in over a century will cut the journey time between Britain’s two biggest cities from one hour 24 minutes to just 49 minutes. The 100-mile, 250mph link will eventually be extended to north-west and north-east England and on to Scotland, bringing Britain’s creaking rail infrastructure up to the level of other major economies such as those of Japan and France. The last hopes of campaigners who want to block the HS2 project because of its impact on the countryside have been dashed by an expert report for the Government dismissing proposed alternatives.A group of 18 local authorities fighting the link had proposed expanding capacity on existing lines, for example by increasing the length of trains.Others suggested improving the East Coast and Midlands main lines as an alternative. But a report by Network Rail, published today, says that besides causing extensive disruption, neither alternative would cater for the expected increase in passenger numbers in the years ahead.

304. We can't let the people decide! Mandelson warns against the 'LOTTERY' of giving voters a say on the EU
The British people must not be given a say on whether to leave the European Union because it is a ‘lottery’ which way they will vote, Lord Mandelson claimed today. The former Labour Cabinet minister said Britain’s EU membership is ‘absolutely fundamental’ and must not be put ‘in the hands’ of an unpredictable referendum. His extraordinary remarks came ahead of the first debate in the House of Lords on Tory plans to stage an in-out referendum by 2017.David Cameron’s Conservative-backed EU referendum Bill is being debated in the House of Lords today, with Labour and the Lib Dems hoping to kill it off.
