177. 'I look like Wallace, not a PM in waiting': Ed admits resemblance to animated character but...
Ed Miliband has admitted he looks less like a Prime Minister than David Cameron – and highlighted his resemblance to Wallace of Wallace and Gromit fame.Declaring that ‘there’s more to politics than the photo op’, the Labour leader attempted to portray himself as a politician of substance, compared with Mr Cameron’s political ‘posturing’ and focus on appearance. But within minutes of finishing his speech yesterday, it emerged Labour is to hire an £80,000-a-year spin doctor to improve the way Mr Miliband looks on television. And critics pointed out that he left the country this week – missing a debate on the Ukraine plane crash in the process – for a photo opportunity with US President Barack Obama.

178. Labour's private hospital stitch-up: Shocking evidence of how the Left sabotaged NHS success story
Shocking evidence of how Labour and union figures had the first privately run NHS hospital declared a failure has been uncovered by the Daily Mail. There are growing calls for an inquiry into how Hinchingbrooke in Cambridgeshire was rated ‘inadequate’ by the Care Quality Commission watchdog – only months after winning an award for patient care. But the Mail has learned that:Individuals who helped draw up the CQC’s damning report have close ties to the Labour Party and unions which oppose NHS privatisation. The local NHS body, which suddenly slashed the hospital’s funding and imposed arbitrary fines, is heavily influenced by Labour activists.

180. A very wet drought | John Redwood's Diary
The imposition of a ban on hosepipe use in the south of England coincided neatly with the arrival of rain bearing winds day after day. It is a very wet kind of drought. It goes alongside the very cold kind of global warming we are experiencing yet again this April.Spare me the official explanations. I understand that winter rainfall has been below average for two winters running. I understand that two cold winters and now a cold April may be just patches of weather. We can shivver together, with many still worrying about the long term trend of global warming.

181. How we got into this mess
Article on how New Labour ruined the British Economy...On Wednesday I was asked to write an article on how we got into the current economic mess by the Daily telegraph. They told me they wanted it for Monday’s paper. On Friday after I had written it they changed their minds and said they did not want a piece about that after all. I thought I would share it with you here:A couple of years ago many people thought all was well with the world. The economy was no longer an issue. Even some Conservatives would tell me they thought Gordon Brown had done a pretty good job, and that Bank of England “independence” was excellent. Endless repetition of the propaganda, ”We have abolished boom and bust”, lulled many into false security. Two years on and how different it all looks. Even the government has given up repeating the boom and bust mantra, realising hubris came before a tumble. Gordon Brown did not make the Bank of England “independent”. He gutted and filleted it, taking away its duty to manage the government’s own debt, and removing the responsibility to supervise the banks.

182. Why do some people and many politicians want to stay in the EU on current terms?
Two arguments are constantly recited by the defenders of our current EU entanglement. Today I wish to deal with the more serious, the proposition that the EU is necessary to prevent wars in Europe. This argument looks to some at first to be attractive and well based. After all, say its proponents, Europe was torn apart by two long and damaging wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Who wouldn’t want to avoid that again? They go on, emboldened by the general agreement that European wars are a bad thing, to point out there has been no recurrence of major European war since the EEC and the EU were formed. This is rather like arguing that we need to belong to the EU to keep horses and carts off our streets.

184. Household electricity bills to soar by £350 a year to pay for Government green subsidies |...
Family electricity bills are set to soar by almost £350 within 15 years – to pay for the Government subsidies for green energy.Official figures — initially withheld by ministers — reveal the price of electricity will rocket by 60 per cent as wind farms and other green projects take over traditional coal-burning power stations. The cost of electricity will jump from £131 per megawatt hour to some £206 by 2030, the Government estimates. It means that the average household bill will rise from £589.50 to £927.

185. Safety fear as EU make our railways go metric, forcing staff to calculate speeds and distances in both miles and kilometres during change-over
Britain’s rail network is to go metric on the orders of EU bureaucrats – sparking safety fears that the move could cause chaos and lead to more accidents.Miles and yards will be banished from official signs and documents and translated into kilometres and metres under the plans. But an official report seen by The Mail on Sunday states that railway workers will have to calculate speeds and distances in both imperial and metric measurements during the change-over, causing a risk of dangerous confusion.

191. Tories plotting to form a coalition with Northern Ireland MPs to avoid sharing power again with Clegg
Senior Tories are secretly preparing the ground for a potential power-sharing deal with unionist MPs from Northern Ireland in the event of another hung parliament after next year’s general election.David Cameron and George Osborne have ordered ministers to say nothing in public to indicate they believe their party is contemplating anything other than outright victory. But privately, many fear the Conservatives are likely to struggle to assemble a majority, though they are increasingly confident that they can remain the largest party. If they again fall short of the 326 MPs needed for an outright win, senior Tories suggest the Democratic Unionist MPs from Northern Ireland could hold the balance of power.
