113. Benjamin Disraeli: Miliband leads the No Nation party, not the One Nation party | The Tory Diary - ConservativeHome
By Benjamin DisraeliYou cannot follow Lord Beaconsfield on Twitter, since he hasn't a clue what it is.I cannot deny that my grasp of public affairs is not as sure as it might be since, for reasons that readers of this publication will understand, I am presently incapable of taking my seat in the House of Lords. I must also confess that my mastery of the means of communication on which this modern age depends is, alas, incomplete (the mysteries of the telegraph remain a wonder to me). None the less, Mary Anne, being returned yesterday afternoon to Hughenden from her duties, has read to me a transcript of the speech of the Labour Party leader to his conference, and I am dictating this article to her by way of response.I wish to make it clear at the outset that I am by no means ill-disposed to Edward Miliband. As I say, my grasp of present events is a little tentative, but I understand from Mary Anne that my party is now in coalition with Mr Gladstone. Readers will comprehend that I find this deeply disturbing, and I see from the opinion polls that my view is widely shared: as I once said, England does not love coalitions. So I am prepared to give Mr Miliband a fair hearing. As I once told the Commons, the cause of labour is the cause of England. This is why the Conservative Party is - or should be - the party of labour, as well as the party of capital.

114. Middle England for wind turbines and expensive energy? Pull the other one. – Telegraph...
I note that the green lobby is trying to spin the protests at Balcombe in East Sussex as Middle England in revolt against fracking. What absolute rot! Never mind that some of the protestors were seen sitting in comfy middle-class-style camping chairs and drinking tea out of actual china cups (there will always be the odd useful idiot at these events) – the fact is that this was part of a well-orchestrated campaign by the usual suspects of the green-stained hard left to close down Western industrial civilisation by whatever means they can.Fracking is the best hope we all have of a quick economic recovery, lower energy prices and an end to the lunacy of onshore and offshore wind. Why, then, would any even half-way informed Middle Englishman or Middle Englishwoman oppose it?

120. 'Chris Smith is a coward, a little git and I'll flush his head down the loo': Tory MP's extraordinary attack on Environment Agency boss as he arrives to see flood-hit families in Somerset
An MP has branded the chairman of the Environment Agency 'a coward' and 'a git' and threatened to 'stick his head down the loo and flush' as he visited the flood-stricken Somerset Levels today.Ian Liddell-Grainger, the furious Tory MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset, lambasted Lord Smith for not visiting the county sooner, much of which has been under several feet of flood water since December. The Labour peer, who has faced criticism for the quango’s decision to stop dredging rivers in flood-prone area, was today facing residents in Somerset, many of whom have called for him to resign.Lord Smith's visit coincided with Prime Minister David Cameron, who was also seeing for himself first hand the damage caused by the floods on the Levels.Speaking about Lord Smith, Mr Liddell-Grainger said: 'I will tell him what I bloody well think of him - he should go, he should walk. I'm livid. This little git has never even been on the telephone to me. When I find out where he is, I will give it to him.

121. The whole of the UK is short of infrastructure | John Redwood's Diary
Some of you have commented that London has grown faster because it has taken a disproprtionate share of the infrastructure investment. It is difficult to square this with the reality. The truth is that much of the UK is short of transport capacity. The country is gradually benefitting from a big expansion of digital broadband capacity, with major investment in all regions. London, the south-east and the east are suffering more than the rest of the country from a failure to invest in enough reservoir capacity for water demands. Electricity is delivered by national grid, and gas and oil are shared around the whole country. There is, it is true, only one high speed train line from London to the Channel tunnel. The rest of the railway network was shared around by Victorian entrepreneurs who put substantial capacity into the then prosperous industrial regions. Modern subsidy perpetuates the broad shape of the Victorian railway, as adjusted by Beeching. If you look at road investment the south of the country has received less motorway investment than the Midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire. East Anglia, Devon and Cornwall, Lincolnshire and Northumberland have all been left out of the motorway age.

122. Ed Miliband is a danger to economy, says CBI president Sir Mike Rake | Mail Online
A leading businessman last night launched a thinly-veiled attack on Ed Miliband, warning that an anti-business government would damage the economy and cost jobs.Sir Mike Rake, president of the CBI and chairman of BT, said the economic recovery is ‘increasingly being exposed to political risk’.Although he did not identify the Labour leader by name, he criticised politicians who offer ‘headline-grabbing policies which sometimes appear aimed more at securing votes than encouraging investment and job creation’.He said: ‘Business is increasingly worried about policy interventions such as on energy, banking, tax and land ownership.’

123. GEOFFREY LEVY SATURDAY ESSAY: The man who hated Britain: Red Ed's pledge to bring back socialism is a homage to his Marxist father. So what did Miliband Snr really believe in?
The man who hated Britain: Red Ed's pledge to bring back socialism is a homage to his Marxist father. So what did Miliband Snr really believe in? The answer should disturb everyone who loves this countryOn a hot summer day, a young man made his way alone to Highgate Cemetery in North London to make a lifelong vow.Solemnly, he stood at the grave of Karl Marx at a moment when, in his own words, 'the cemetery was utterly deserted . . . I remember standing in front of the grave, fist clenched, and swearing my own private oath that I would be faithful to the workers' cause'.The year was 1940. The young man was Ralph Miliband, a Jewish immigrant who, with his father, had fled to London from Belgium just weeks earlier to escape the Nazi Holocaust.Miliband, father of Ed and David Miliband, died in 1994, aged 70, soon after the publication of his last book, Socialism For A Sceptical Age. In it, the venerated Marxist philosopher and academic continued to espouse his lifelong 'socialist' cause.

128. France to stop 75% super-tax after struggling to attract top international staff | Daily Mail...
When President Francois Hollande unveiled a 'super-tax' on the rich in 2012, some feared an exodus of business, sporting and artistic talent. One adviser warned it was a Socialist step too far that would turn France into 'Cuba without sun'.Two years on, with the tax due to expire at the end of this month, the mass emigration has not happened. But the damage to France's appeal as a home for top earners has been great, and the pickings from the levy paltry.
