609. Greece teeters on edge of bankruptcy as debt talks stall | Mail Online
France was tonight stripped of its coveted AAA credit rating in a crushing humiliation for Nicolas Sarkozy.Leading ratings agency Standard & Poor’s cut the French credit score by one notch to AA+ in a major setback to the President’s hopes of re-election.The downgrade – on Friday the 13th – came just a month after a bitter war of words broke out between Paris and London over the relative health of the French and British economies.Fears are also rising that the credit ratings of several other eurozone countries could soon be downgraded - prompting global markets to fall and the euro falling to a 16-month low.Analysts today said that ratings agency Standards & Poor was finally going to deliver the downgrades it had threatened for much of the 17-nation eurozone just over a month ago.It comes because of concerns of Europe's inability to get a grip on a debt crisis that has raged for around two years. And it is on the same day that Greece was revealed to once again be teetering on the edge of a catastrophic bankruptcy - as negotiations on a bond swap to slash its public debt by 100 billion euros stalled.

Putting fluoride in the water to prevent tooth decay has been a long-time practice that is still not without its controversy, but another substance that’s associated with mood-altering effects could be lurking in your the drinking supply — and it got there naturally.Anna Fels, a psychiatrist and professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, wrote in a New York Times op-ed over the weekend that lithium, an antimanic drug that decreases abnormal brain activity, is present in varying levels in the water supply and “has been largely ignored for over half a century.” If you didn’t know, lithium was also included in early recipes of the soda 7Up.

614. Caller Learns It’s a Very Bad Idea to Call Howard Stern and Bash Israel: ‘F*** Off!’
Popular SiriusXM radio host Howard Stern went off on a belligerent caller last week after he argued Israel is “at fault” for the current conflict between the Jewish nation and the terrorists of Hamas in Gaza. Stern has been consistently pro-Israel in his views. The caller first claimed that Stern would “change his tune” and turn his back on Israel when Comedy Central host John Oliver was in the studio — and Stern was having none of it.“I’m not gonna change my tune. Israel’s at no fault,” Stern said.“Israel is at fault, actually,” the caller said.“F*** off!” Stern shot back before calling the caller another very profane name. When the caller claimed that “Zionists run Israel,” Stern cut him off.“Oh, f*** off,” the radio host said. “I don’t want to any anti-Semitism today. Jews get enough s**t all over the world. They get s**t on all the time. Jews are the indigenous people of that area. I’m sick of the bulls**t. And the Arabs don’t even want those Palestinians, otherwise they’d let them matriculate into their country.”

620. The German surplus
Let us talk today about the German surplus. There it stands, enormous, giving Germany a great sense of achievement and power. No wonder so many Germans want to keep the Euro. They associate it with high levels of exports throughout the EU, and rising cash balances as they seek payment for their goods. In 2010 Germany exported 179 billion Euros more than it imported. 60% of its exports were to the rest of the EU.It leads Germans to say to other Euro members, you can be like us. Work as hard as we do, set realistic wages, and you too can have a surplus like ours. The German surplus is matched by the southern states’ combined deficits. Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Italy had a combined deficit about as large as Germany’s combined surplus. They like Germany do a lot of trade within the EU. They recognise that Germany has become more competitive than them. They want a way to pay for the goods they buy from Germany. They seek loans or grants from the surplus country to pay the bills. Germany is not keen to send them grants, and is trying to restrict the borrowing. The southern states are forced in to austerity measures, to curb their appetite for German products.

621. Reply on Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
I recently posted the government statement of what they are doing about immigration because I know how important this issue is to many who read this site. Some of you were grateful and surprised by how much action the government is taking. Others cynically complained that it was all words, pointing out that over the last year there has still been a high level of entry.I have listened carefully to Ministers and talked regularly to them about what they are doing. I am quite sure they wish to control numbers, and are taking actions which they believe will do that in a fair and sensible way. They are well aware that so far the numbers have not reduced, but point out that it takes time to get each of these measures into effect and to ensure they are working well at each entry point into the country. They accept that the proof of their measures comes over the next year, when they expect to see results. They are of course ready and willing to examine other ways to achieve what they wish to achieve, especially if the numbers do not decline as they expect.

624. Cameron 'out of touch' with his party on Europe: PM told he risks causing disastrous divisions after dismissing MPs' to give Parliament veto over EU law
David Cameron was branded ‘absolutely out of touch’ with the Tory party last night after he dismissed calls to give Parliament a veto over EU law.The Prime Minister was told he risked causing disastrous divisions in the party, including a Cabinet split, after a letter from 95 backbenchers demanding the right to say No to European legislation was branded unrealistic.Eurosceptics reacted furiously last night, saying the Prime Minister would be ‘bonkers’ to ignore their views and warning that Tory high command was heading for an ‘almighty smash-up’ with the rest of the party.
