467. Blond on blonde: Mrs T’s unassailable legacy - Telegraph
In the course of researching this article I approached an intelligent 15 year-old girl. She had been born three years after Margaret Thatcher left office. She had never seen her in action. She had no personal memories of any of the great controversies of the Thatcher epoch. And, therefore, she struck me as a perfect source for an understanding of the full semiotic range of the words "Margaret Thatcher" in the minds of young people today. This schoolgirl had been taught by good left-liberal teachers. She had read the papers and listened all her life to the BBC, and she had the normal British teenager's range of cultural references. I tried a word-association test. "So what do you think," I asked her, "when I say the words 'Margaret Thatcher' "? She paused, and then she said: "Billy Elliott."And there, my friends, you have the cultural war that continues to this day – 30 years after she came to power – over the legacy of Britain's first female prime minister. Not since Napoleon has a nation been so divided over the merits of a former leader. For millions of young people who have watched Billy Elliott, Thatcher is the evil, boss-eyed termagant whose disastrous economic philosophy was responsible for the break-up of ancient Hovis-ad mining communities, and whose awful blurtings of right-wing dogma inspired all that was basest in human nature. She was a semi-ludicrous mixture of Boudicca and Queen Victoria, who whipped up her folk to ecstasies of cretinous Brussels-bashing.

468. The Top 5 Lies About Fracking - Reason.com
Gasland Part II, the sequel to director/activist Josh Fox's earlier anti-fracking docudrama Gasland, will run on HBO next Monday. It appears to have rounded up the usual corporate villains and appealing victims of profit-hungry capitalist skullduggery, rather than telling the more substantial story: that fracking combined with horizontal drilling has unleashed a bonanza of cheap natural gas.

470. Why does Londons economy perform so much better than the rest of the UK?
When I wrote the Economic Policy Review with colleagues before the last election, one of the most striking findings we highlighted was the persistent outperformance of the London economy compared to the rest of the UK. Indeed, we discovered that the further from London you went the slower the growth. We also reported that the regional economies in the UK that received the largest subsidies and the most government assistance and intervention performed the worst. Some of you are ready to leap to your keyboards to say that you should not claim cause and effect when of course government spends more and intervenes more in parts of the country with poor prospects. Let me spare you the anger. Part of the reason the poorer parts of the country receive more government help is that they are poor to start with. That’s why governments of all persuasions send them more money. They are locked into a single currency with London, so they need transfer payments to survive.

473. The pain in Spain falls mainly on the private sector
The Euro crisis is returning. Yesterday the cost of borrowing ten year money for the Spanish government hit 5.98%, following a giddy rise in the last few days. The government was forced into announcing another Euro 10 billion of cuts, this time in regional government’s health and education spending. Some of you may recall that recently we read of the most austere budget ever in Spain, with Euro 27 billion of cuts. This was the new government’s fevered attempt to get the Spanish public sector deficit down to 5.3%, from the 8.5% it ran at last year. In 2011 the then government overshot its target of a 6% deficit by a mighty 2.5% of GDP (around 27 billion Euros). This year the new government budgets to overshoot the old 4.4% target by just 0.9% of GDP. These are still large numbers.

Our stomachs are surely one of the most troublesome parts of our bodies — at any point, an estimated nine million Britons are suffering from tummy ache, bloating, wind and cramps.Meanwhile, between 12 to 15 per cent of the population is constipated, and one in five has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which causes cramps, diarrhoea and constipation. The number of people affected by gut problems is on the rise, says Dr Anton Emmanuel, consultant gastroenterologist at London’s University College Hospital and medical director at gut health charity Core.

477. Stop hoarding cash, businesses told as UK narrowly avoids double-dip recession | Mail Online
The UK has narrowly avoided a double-dip recession, but will struggle for the rest of the year unless businesses stop hoarding cash and start investing, a forecaster warned today.Emergency measures from the Bank of England, European Central Bank and US Federal Reserve have boosted confidence and stabilised financial markets, pulling the UK back from the brink of recession, the Ernst & Young ITEM Club said. The ITEM Club has forecast that UK GDP growth will be a 'dismal' 0.4 per cent this year, which is half the 0.8 per cent estimated by the tax and spending watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, before rising to 1.5 per cent in 2013 and 2.6 per cent in 2014.

478. DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Co-op, Labour and a betrayal of values | Mail Online
Yesterday, as the Co-op announced losses of £2.5billion – the worst results in its 150-year history – the Group’s new chief executive spoke of a ‘disaster’ that would ‘shock’ its eight million members. The brutal truth, however, is that this was a calamity that could have been predicted years ago, as the Co-op moved far away from the noble objectives of the 19th-century Rochdale Pioneers to improve the lives of the working classes.Instead of focusing on running a solid business in the interests of its wider membership, the group’s Left-wing regional officials were more interested in lining their own pockets and pursuing a socialist, Labour-supporting agenda.

479. SIMON HEFFER: My cunning plan to save David Cameron's bacon | Mail Online
The Tory leadership’s policy of delaying an in/out referendum on Europe until 2017 is fast coming unstuck, and the consequences could be fatal. This week, 95 Tory MPs stepped up the pressure and signed a letter demanding a veto over any legislation forced upon Britain from Brussels. For almost half the party’s backbenchers not only hate our current arrangements with the EU but they know their constituents hate them, too. However, the signatories realise that hell will freeze over before ministers would ever make such a challenge.
