- 417. Kipper smoking sparks false alarm - Community - Whitby Gazette
WHITBY fire brigade squeezed their way along Upper Church Street last Friday after reports of smoke coming from the roof of a Henrietta Street building.Despite suspicions that that source may have been Fortune’s Kippers smoke-house, the fire service followed procedure and scrambled to engines to the scene.A fire spokesperson said: “Even though we suspected that’s what it was, we can’t ignore the call and so sent engines up there to check it out.”For over 140 years Fortune’s Kippers has been lighting fires a couple of times each day to create its produce and owner Barry Brown says that when smoke escapes the building, the fire service occasionally arrives a few minutes later.

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith reacted with fury after UN inspector Raquel Rolnik issued what he called an 'utterly ridiculous' report.Miss Rolnik's visit to Britain last year as the UN's 'special rapporteur' on housing, during which she met dozens of council house tenants, visited food banks and travellers' sites and invited written submissions, prompted a storm of controversy. The academic, brought up a Marxist, offered an animal sacrifice to Karl Marx when she was studying for her master's degree in architecture, according to her sister.

- 419. Time for the States to Declare Independence From the Federal Government - Breitbart
“Take this Supreme Court decision and shove it.”A new Rasmussen Poll indicates that a growing number of Americans want state governments to tell the Supreme Court to get out of the business of rewriting laws and telling American citizens how to live their lives. In a new poll, Rasmussen reported the percentage of Americans who want states to tell the Supreme Court it does not have the power to rewrite the Affordable Care Act or force sovereign states to authorize gay marriages has increased from 24 percent to 33 percent after last week’s Constitution-defying decisions by the court.

- 422. DAILY MAIL COMMENT: How quangos are still in Labour's iron grip | Mail Online
Ousted Labour quangocrat Sally Morgan has scored a dramatic own goal against her party by accusing David Cameron of stuffing public bodies with Tory supporters. For her bitter outburst – the very opposite of the truth – has succeeded only in highlighting Labour’s overwhelming domination of these supposedly apolitical, taxpayer-funded authorities.Indeed, one of the most underhand achievements of the last government was ruthlessly to remove huge areas of public administration from democratic control, swelling quangos’ powers and putting its own placemen in charge.

- 423. Hello Obama second term; bye bye Western Civilization – Telegraph Blogs
"Can't wait for the leftards' misery when Romney wins. It will be like eating foie gras to the sound of trumpets." @jamesdelingpole on Twitter last week.Well: I think that's what they call a 'hostage to fortune.' And, of course, I don't remotely blame all the leftards who've been blowing raspberries in response. I'm sure I would have done just the same had our positions been reversed.Nonetheless it seems to me that the victory the Obamaphiles have won is entirely Pyrrhic. In what way, I would like to ask them, is a second term for a proven failure a good thing? On the evidence of Obama's four years in power so far, what exactly have they seen that augurs so well for the next four years of the American presidency? Was it his resolute decision to sacrifice the lives of four brave men in Benghazi, perhaps?Or was it his truly heartwarming eagerness to reward his friends at Solyndra by handing them $500 million of taxpayers' money for a business that was essentially worthless?

- 424. Report: Harry Reid 'Seethed' At Disengaged President Obama| The Minority Report Blog
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other top Democrats are increasingly frustrated with how disengaged President Obama is, according an article in the New York Times. The story, by reporters Carl Hulse, Jeremy Peters, and Michael Shear, is the second highly critical Obama story this week from the Times, which earlier noted that Obama was crafting his use of executive power “almost entirely behind closed doors” with “lobbyists and interest groups.”The article reveals that Obama coolly dismissed Reid during a meeting with Sen. Mitch McConnell and two other members of Congress in a meeting in June.

- 431. GE nuclear reactor eats its own waste
As The New York Times observed in its Sunday story on nuclear power, just a few years ago, utilities were telling the Nuclear Regulatory Commission they wanted to build 28 new reactors. Fast forward to today, with the economy driving down energy demand and prices — and climate legislation on the backburner — and those reactors are still on the drawing board. But technological breakthroughs can transform a sluggish sector into a futuristic game-changer. Case in point: GE Hitachi’s Advanced Recycling Center, (ARC). The ARC technology is basically the anti-nuke: it actually burns nuclear waste (even weapons-grade plutonium), and emits exactly zero CO2.Here’s the secret: The system uses a liquid metal — sodium — to control the nuclear reaction, instead of high-pressure water. The sodium-cooling allows the reactor to “burn” the leftover energy in its used fuel — nuclear waste that, in traditional water-cooled reactors, would be taken and stored for thousands of years. In fact, when used fuel is removed from a traditional water-cooled reactor, 95 percent of its potential energy is still untapped.
