385. What do the election results tell us?
Labour won 2158 seats, Conservatives 1005 and Lib Dems 431. Congratulations to Labour on their success. Thank you to all those outgoing Councillors who have worked hard and who now have been asked to stand down.SNP and Plaid came fourth and fifth, with the Greens picking up 40 seats in sixth place, or fourth place amongst UK wide parties. The English Democrats lost their 2 Councillors and UKIP made no net gains, staying with 9.This leaves Labour controlling 75 Councils, the Conservatives 45, the Lib Dems 6 and SNP 2. No other party controls a Council. Turnout was a very low 32%.All parties and anyone who believes in democracy should be worried that 68% did not think it worthwhile voting. There was plenty of choice on the ballot papers in many places. If people still did not think there was sufficient choice they could have stood themselves. So why was there such a mass abstention?

390. Reshuffle blues?
There was some good news in the reshuffle. Mr Hague’s decision to leave Parliament next May means we now have a Foreign Secretary who has stated he wants out of the EU if we do not get a much better deal. That is a better stance for our negotiation, and encouraging that he agrees with many of us that the UK’s current position in the EU is unacceptable.

393. EU Chief: Our Work Should Not be Transparent | The Minority Report Blog
In what might be considered a major gaffe, the European Union’s (EU) chief scientific adviser Anne Glover has just insisted her work should be “not transparent” and should be kept out of the public eye.Her advice to the Commission chief is often on controversial topics such as global warming, genetically modified crops and nuclear power. You might assume these are important issues that deserve scrutiny, but the EU and Dr. Glover clearly disagree.

395. David Cameron's decision to sack Owen Paterson will send rural voters flooding to Ukip »...
During Owen Paterson’s vocal conversation with David Cameron in defence of his record as Environment Minister after learning he was being sacked, Paterson reportedly said: ‘this will be a kick in the teeth to 12 million countryside voters… you are making a big mistake’.There is already mounting evidence to suggest Paterson could be right. Judging by the two standing ovations that Paterson went on to receive last Friday at the Game Fair at Blenheim Palace (at the mere mention of his name), Charles Moore commented that ‘you could almost see the disaffected Tory voters fleeing to Ukip across the tent’.

396. TORRO - British Weather Extremes: Minimum Temperatures
Severe winter cold spells in Britain are associated withthe advection of very cold air masses from the east or norththe subsequent establishment of a deep and extensive snow cover. The advection of very cold air is most effective when Continental arctic air (from north-west Russia) reaches central and southern parts of England and Wales on an easterly wind, thus crossing a relatively narrow stretch of the North Sea. Widespread low daytime temperatures occur in such circumstances, especially over snow covered ground. An especially severe 'cold wave' occurred in January 1987 when, on the 12th, daytime maximum temperatures at low altitudes ranged from around 0°C in the Outer Hebrides to -8°C at several places in eastern England; Southend in Essex, where 38 cm. of snow was lying, did not exceed -9°C between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

399. Labour's mansion tax plan will kill house sales and trigger £2 billion slump in stamp duty |...
Labour's mansion tax would unfairly penalise the elderly, slow the housing market and trigger a £2billion slump in stamp duty, a damning report reveals.Ed Miliband has claimed the controversial proposal to impose a levy on homes worth over £2million would raise £1.2billion a year, which could pay for thousands of extra doctors, nurses and midwives. But the study shows this is ‘overly optimistic’ and the policy could actually cause a loss in stamp duty receipts of almost £2billion in just six years. This drop could, the report says, be ‘even greater than the proceeds’ of the new mansion tax – rendering it pointless. Despite Labour’s claims that it would be a tax on the rich, academics said the policy did not ‘necessarily target wealth’.
