292. Douglas Carswell MP: 'Small-state Conservatism' is more popular than 'wind turbine Conservatism'...
It’s not all doom and gloom. Here in my part of Essex, our brand of Conservatism actually seems to be doing rather well.“Wind turbine Toryism” might be struggling a little elsewhere. But in my experience the appetite for small-state, direct democracy Conservatism has never been stronger.Take our local Association membership, for example. Nationally, fewer folk each year seem to join political parties. Not here. Over the past year alone, over a hundred new members have joined, including young people and families.Far from struggling to find local candidates to field in local council elections, as was once the case, our local Association has been inundated with applications from local residents wanting to serve their community – even in seats we’ve not held for decades.

293. Climate change “Fastest in Earth’s history”? Nonsense! | Roger Helmer MEP
Bill McGuire is described in the Daily Telegraph as “Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards” at University College, London. It occurs to me that his job title rather begs the question of whether or not we face any significant climate hazards. If you hold the Chair of Climate Hazards, you might well be inclined to believe in them, and — who knows — you might be motivated to study them in a less than wholly dispassionate way. But let that pass.Professor McGuire is reported as saying, first that climate change is likely to cause earthquakes, “volcano storms” (whatever they are) and tsunamis. He is also reported as saying: “The speed of today’s climate change is unprecedented in Earth’s history”.I hesitate to call the good Professor a liar, but it is difficult to understand how he would not know that this statement is quite simply preposterous, and utterly untrue.

295. Thinking about thorium | Roger Helmer MEP
I have previously written about thorium, a metal which offers an alternative to uranium for nuclear energy. Its supporters argue that it offers benefits in terms of safety, very little radioactive waste, no material suitable for weapons, and fuel availability not for centuries but for millennia. The biggest barrier to thorium development is not technical, but commercial. Existing players in the nuclear business have a massive investment in uranium technology, and would need big incentives to develop what is, in essence, a parallel substitute technology.

296. Tax incentives and tax avoidance | JohnRedwoodsDiary
As politicians and some in the media work the country into a frenzy against tax dodgers, please spare a thought for all those politicians and commentators arguing for more tax breaks to promote good works, more gr0wth and healthy lifestyles. One man’s tax dodger is another man’s prudent individual taking advantage of strongly recommended tax breaks which have been carefully honed by government. Some people pay less tax because they give generously to charity, some because they are making accelerated savings for retirement so they will not depend on benefits and taxpayers in their old age, some because they are investing in places and causes approved by politicians, some because they are lending their money to the government to spend on public services.

297. Conservatory tax to be axed: Ministers signal a retreat on charity tax relief too | Mail Online
Ministers are to scrap plans for a ‘conservatory tax’ following a massive Tory backlash.A senior Government source told the Mail that the proposals are ‘dead in the water’.This latest abrupt U-turn comes only a week after we revealed the move which would force homeowners to fork out hundreds of pounds extra on measures to improve energy efficiency when they build an extension or fit a boiler.Although the Liberal Democrat-inspired plans are still out for consultation, the source said: ‘We are absolutely not going to have a conservatory tax. It is an attack on aspiration and we want nothing to do with it. It will be blocked.’

298. Can innovation transform the public sector?
Many parts of the private sector are being changed dramatically by digital technology. If you want to buy a house you can now visit a range of properties on line and see their floor plans and their inside and outside appearance from your home computer. If you want to buy any good or service you can google it and see a list of competing offers, usually with prices. You can order on line from your armchair. If you want to find a new job there are electronic jobs boards with choices of openings on offer. You can bank online, insure your car on line, undertake a study course on line. The opportunities are endless. The role and nature of the estate agent, the insurance broker, the bank clerk and the employment agency have altered substantially.

300. The dandy with a will of iron: He was a Madonna fan and would be Oscar Wilde. But, as a new...
While the rest of his friends mucked about on the number 9 bus on the journey home from school, the 16-year-old George Osborne clamped his pocket radio hard to his ear. It wasn’t the football results he was after — he was resolutely non-sporty — nor the latest single by Madonna, of whom he was a fervent fan.No, what the ferociously ambitious schoolboy was desperate to listen to was the Budget Speech, live. It was 1988, and the then Chancellor, Nigel Lawson, was delivering radical tax cuts for high earners. As the bus crossed Hammersmith Bridge towards Osborne’s Notting Hill home, he heard the Deputy Speaker halt the session as opposition MPs barracked the Chancellor for scything the top rate of income tax.Twenty-four years on, George Osborne now occupies the position of Chancellor and is uncomfortably aware of the unpopularity of tax cuts for high earners, which — thanks to the need to placate his Lib-Dem Coalition partners — almost derailed his own widely derided ‘omnishambles’ Budget earlier this year.

301. Germany will still sell us her BMWs if we change our relationship with the EU
The main argument that advocates of our current EU relationship advance is that we do more than half our trade with the EU so we have to maintain full membership to keep all those jobs. It is the most stupid argument in current UK politics. It is extraordinary that it has been trotted out uncritically for more than fortty years, and still many in the media fall for it.It is often based on the lie that more than half our trade is with the rest of the EU. This figure ignores our very profitable trade in services, where well over half is with non EU countries. It ignores the Rotterdam and Amsterdam entrepot effect, where trade with the rest of the world passes through these large ports and is counted as EU trade when it is with places further away.

303. Speak for the UK, Mr Cameron
Mr Cameron has a simple choice. He can either go along with the plans for a German Europe, and be hailed by federalists as a good European, or he can call their bluff and speak for the UK.The Merkel plan will not save the Euro. It does nothing to tackle the underlying problems of too much government borrowing, and too little competitiveness. It increases the gap between the governed and the governing. Fining countries who have no money is ludicrous.
