259. Cameron's coalition of liars, trimmers and charlatans are destroying Britain's landscape
About this time ten years ago, I enjoyed one of my happiest family holidays ever. It was on Lundy which, as Will Heaven rightly says, is the most beautiful island in Britain. If you're lucky enough to be staying in one of the Landmark Trust properties on the island you get the place pretty much to yourself once the daytrippers have gone. There are fantastic cliffs for your children to fall off, puffins to look for (though usually not to see: we never did) and seals to go swimming with. It's like living out an Arthur Ransome/Enid Blyton novel for real.

260. Residents of eco-friendly homes at £5.6million complex complain of annual £2,000 electricity...
Residents promised cheaper bills to live in a multi-million pound eco-friendly 'homes of the future' complex say they will have to move out after being hit with sky-high electricity charges. The Pavilion Gardens complex in West Bowling, Bradford, West Yorkshire, was heralded as being the most environmentally-friendly in the county when it was completed in July 2011 at a cost of £5.6million.Residents were told their electricity bills would be £500 cheaper than average because the houses are super-insulated with biomass boilers for heating and solar panels for electricity. But just 18 months after moving in, many residents say they have been hit with massive electrical bills almost double the annual average and they can't afford to live in the properties.

261. Rebalancing the economy
The government’s economic plan rightly said it intended to cut the share of the economy taken by the public sector, and boost the share of manufacturing and production. In their last three full calendar years they presided over more than a 10% fall in production industries output, and a 3.7% increase in public sector real output.

262. Labour housing supremo secretly recorded making threats to impose rent controls on what landlords can charge if party won next election
Labour would impose rent controls ‘without hesitation’ if it won the next election, its housing spokesman Jack Dromey has been secretly recorded saying. His admission came eight days after Labour’s biggest paymaster the Unite union called for the party to adopt controls on what private landlords can charge. It brought claims that Unite, where Mr Dromey was deputy general secretary until 2010, has ‘bought’ Labour policy.Rent controls have been tried by socialist governments, in particular, around the world but have been widely regarded as disastrous. However Mr Dromey, MP for Birmingham Erdington and husband of Labour’s deputy leader Harriet Harman, said Labour wants to impose rent controls if it wins power in 2015.

263. How green policies hurt the poor - The Spectator
Advocates against global warming often frame the issue in terms of helping the poor. ‘You’re right, people dying thanks to climate change is some way off…’ ran one fairly typical advert recently, ‘about 5,000 miles, give or take.’ Indeed, the United Nations agrees that, looking toward the future, climate change ‘harms the poor first and worst’. And the logic stacks up: the poorer you are, the less able you’ll be to afford the resources to adapt to a changing climate. However, climate policies also have a cost, and these predominantly hurt the poor. And if you really want to help the poor, there might be much more efficient ways to help than by cutting emissions.

265. I'll curb power of Tube unions, says Boris | Mayor
Boris Johnson today vowed to reduce the power of union bosses by introducing driverless trains - and revealed that key Tube lines will be fully automatic within two years. In his first interview in the race for City Hall, the Mayor said he would use a second term to force through unprecedented transport reforms that pitch him into the biggest battle yet for control of the Underground. He claimed that he was the only politician who could create an automated network and reduce risk of strikes, adding: "I want to be the Mayor who delivers that."He also refused to rule out running for a third term despite repeated claims that he intends to mount a bid for the leadership of the Tory Party. He said he "regrets" previously saying he would serve a maximum of two terms as Mayor.Mr Johnson's comments on driverless trains today will put the issue at the heart of the election contest. By automating the Tube, Mr Johnson believes he can take away the unions' ability to hold the capital to ransom by calling what he has described as "pointless" drivers' strikes. There have been 23 during his four years in office.

267. Power crisis risk 'worse than feared' this winter, SSE warns - Telegraph
The risk of power shortages this winter has been underestimated by ministers and the National Grid, with factory shutdowns and “politically unacceptable” price spikes more likely than had been feared, energy giant SSE has warned.National Grid last month said that in a cold winter the UK’s electricity “margin” - the safety buffer between peak demand and supply - would fall to just 5pc, the lowest since 2007, as old power stations are switched off.But Keith MacLean, SSE’s director of policy and research, warned: “We think that could easily flip to minus 5pc.”“It’s easy to see how you get from just about having enough, to not having quite enough,” he warned. He said Britain would not face blackouts “unless National Grid really cocks up quite badly” as it had measures to manage demand, such as asking industrial sites to switch off.
