- 177. Global Warming 'Skeptics' Political Sway From UK To India | The Daily Caller
Skepticism of global warming may be more widespread than it is portrayed in the media, with nearly half of British lawmakers being labelled as climate “skeptics” and India’s prime minister casting doubt on claims of man-made global warming.A special report by PR Week shows that a vast majority of conservative members of UK Parliament are that mankind is the main driver behind global temperature rises. While a slight majority (51 percent) of members of parliament (MPs) say that global warming “is largely man made” and an established fact, nearly three quarters of conservative MPs disagree.PR Week reports that 53 percent of conservative MPs agree with the statement that it “has not yet been conclusively proved that climate change is man made.” Another 18 percent of conservative MPs say “man-made climate change is environmentalist propaganda”.

- 184. Piers saved for future generations - Local - Whitby Gazette
Action is being taken to secure the future of Whitby’s piers after almost £5million of funding was pledged from the Environment Agency. After what borough councillor Joe Plant described as five years’ hard work, he received the “fantastic news for Whitby” that the agency was set to award £4.8m towards repair work for Whitby’s two piers, including installing new sea defences.“It was a lot of time and hard work, but I am pleased to say £4.8m is the right result. The repairs are a really long time coming and finally we can say the work is being put in.”The repairs have been identified and applied for through the Whitby Coastal Defence Strategy 2. However, the hard work is not over yet for Coun Plant and the working party as experts must now be commissioned to discover what work needs to be done.

- 186. BREAKING NEWS - Lighthouse to close - Entertainment - Whitby Gazette
WHITBY’S West Pier lighthouse has closed to the public indefinitely.A detailed inspection, commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council revealed structural faults to the central column which supports the spiral staircase running through the centre of the lighthouse, built more than 170 years ago out of local sandstone.Whitby Harbour Board chairman, Coun Mike Cockerill, said: “We do not consider it safe enough to allow public access at this time.“We are currently seeking expert advice about the best way to address the situation, but public safety is our paramount concern and it’s not something we take chances with.”Whitby Harbour Board set out its intention to inspect all of the harbour assets soon after it was formed last year and in the last eight months a number of reports have been compiled. When all of the reviews have been completed, a plan will be put in place which sets out a timetable of work in the harbour, with funding sought to see assets repaired or improved.

- 187. Besides everything else, our bankers are confused | Roger Helmer MEP
It happens over and over: some important person goes to Number Ten clutching his notes in full view of the waiting press-men. Now it’s happened again. The hapless victim this time was David Sands, CEO of Standard Chartered. And we can read his two key concerns. First, he fears for the City if Britain leaves the EU (which looks increasingly likely). And second, he’s worried about the remuneration proposals in CRD4 — an EU Directive. The same article reports the concerns of the PM and the banking industry about the EU’s proposal for a banking union, which could have huge negative consequences for the City.Surely Mr. Sands can see the irony? On the one hand, his biggest fear is that the UK leaves the EU. But his other key concerns are EU plans and directives. Sorry, Mr. Sands, but you can’t have it both ways.

Yesterday Parliament debated whether to opt back in to 35 of the EU Criminal Justice measures. We have recently rightly opted out of all 135 measures, as we were entitled do under our version of the centralising Lisbon Treaty. I and others told Parliament why we do not wish to opt back in to anything.

- 189. Will they hold a referendum on the EU?
The mood seems to be changing a little in the two main party leaderships since we held the Parliamentary vote last year to require a referendum on the EU. Then they were both adamant that it was a bad idea. The Conservative leadership said they would provide a referendum should any future powers be conceded to the EU, to be defined by themselves. Labour stuck to its position in government that referendums were undesirable and not needed. They after all gave away massive powers of self government at Nice, Amsterdam and Lisbon, but never thought a referendum necessary.

- 190. Going for growth – deregulation
Past governments and the present government speak the language of deregulation, but end up regulating more.Opponents always try to blame deregulators for whatever ills in society regulation was trying to cure. Sensible deregulators no more want fraud, credit bubbles, unsafe factories or bad employers than anyone else. There are two main issues. How effective is each regulation – does it really reduce the incidence of the ill you dislike? Is the cumulative burden of all the regulation tolerable, or does the burden in turn create worse ills like too few jobs and lower living standards?

- 191. Plenary Speech, June 13th: The Single Market | Roger Helmer MEP
I will be speaking today in Plenary, in Strasbourg, on the report on the EU’s Single Market penned by Conservative MEP Malcolm Harbour. This is what I plan to say:Plenary Speech June 13thMr. President,I should like to thank our rapporteur, my good friend Malcolm Harbour, for his meticulous work. But he falls in to an error common amongst British Conservatives.Challenged to find even one good thing to say about the European Union, most British Conservatives will cite the Single Market. They seem to believe that it’s a Free Trade Area, and they like free trade. But it’s not. It’s a Customs Union, and it’s a bureaucratic nightmare of regulation and red tape.

- 192. Middle England for wind turbines and expensive energy? Pull the other one. – Telegraph...
I note that the green lobby is trying to spin the protests at Balcombe in East Sussex as Middle England in revolt against fracking. What absolute rot! Never mind that some of the protestors were seen sitting in comfy middle-class-style camping chairs and drinking tea out of actual china cups (there will always be the odd useful idiot at these events) – the fact is that this was part of a well-orchestrated campaign by the usual suspects of the green-stained hard left to close down Western industrial civilisation by whatever means they can.Fracking is the best hope we all have of a quick economic recovery, lower energy prices and an end to the lunacy of onshore and offshore wind. Why, then, would any even half-way informed Middle Englishman or Middle Englishwoman oppose it?
