65. Why Britain should follow the yellow brick road to Kansas and cut taxes - Telegraph
The US state’s radical programme of tax cuts is in stark contrast to our own fiscal caution.By the time you read this column, squeals of celebration may already be emanating from HM Treasury on Whitehall: at 9.30am today, the UK’s Office for National Statistics is expected to confirm that after nearly six years of waiting, gross domestic product has finally succeeded in reaching and passing its pre-crisis peak. Something will have gone badly wrong with the statistics if that’s not the outcome. The Government is entitled to take some pride in what is undoubtedly a defining moment. This is an important milestone in Britain’s long march back to economic health. Yet a triumph of economic policy it is not, for there is no escaping the painful truth that Britain’s recovery from the ravages of the financial crisis has been an exceptionally protracted one – in fact, it is the most protracted peacetime recovery since records began. What’s more, the population has grown quite a bit during this period, so GDP per head has still got some way to go before it attains past levels. It is this latter fact that explains what is still one of the most troubling features of the British predicament – the Government is continuing to spend way more than it receives in tax revenues.

66. Soak the middle class: Clegg wants to hit millions earning over £50,000 with higher tax bills | Daily Mail
Millions of middle-class Britons must get ready to pay higher taxes, Nick Clegg declared yesterday. With the nation facing its longest period of belt-tightening since the war, the Deputy Prime Minister said the ‘top 10 per cent’ – around 3million earning more than £50,500 – should brace themselves for new levies.Options include an end to tax relief on pension contributions for higher-rate taxpayers, an ‘accessions tax’ to replace inheritance tax, and further increases in capital gains tax.

67. Avoidance, evasion and spending
Every year that Labour was in power they announced a clampdown on avoidance and evasion of tax. Every year more complicated provisions were put into Finance Acts to make it more difficult for people to evade tax (illegal), and to make more avoidance schemes (legal) into illegal devices. You might have thought that after 13 years of doing that, the job would be done.

68. Inquiry as Ken Livingstone saves thousands in tax bill - Telegraph
Ken Livingstone, Labour’s candidate for the London mayoralty, faces an HM Revenue and Customs investigation after admitting that he has set some of his election expenses against tax, saving thousands of pounds on his personal tax bill. Mr Livingstone, who has called tax avoiders “rich b******s” who should “not be allowed to vote,” has struggled to fend off charges of hypocrisy after The Sunday Telegraph revealed that he has avoided at least £50,000 in tax by channelling his earnings through a personal company, Silveta Ltd and paying corporation tax at 20 or 21 per cent rather than income tax at up to 50 per cent.

70. Know Liberals Who LOVE Talking Up Socialism? Next Time Hit Them With These 5 Facts
Know Liberals Who LOVE Talking Up Socialism? Next Time Hit Them With These 5 FactsAnyone that has paid even the slightest bit of attention to the presidential campaign of self-declared socialist and independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders knows that he is rather fond of the type of socialism practiced in Northern Europe. In fact, Sanders has made it quite clear that if he is elected he will do everything he can to further transform America politically and style it after the “democratic socialism” of alleged utopias like Scandinavian countries, such as Denmark. The economically illiterate supporters of Bernie Sanders like to refer to Denmark as a perfect example of how socialism can be successful, but there are a few problems with their claims, according to Mad World News. While the Sanderistas tout the allegedly “free” health care and college that Danes enjoy, they forget that the “free stuff” is actually paid for by Danish taxpayers, who commonly pay an income tax rate somewhere between 55 and 65 percent. On top of such oppressive income tax rates, the Danes also pay a 25 percent sales tax, which is more than triple the highest state sales tax rates in America. These high tax rates have led to an enormously inflated cost of living in Denmark, with prices for everything from rent to restaurants to goods at grocery stores being many times higher than their equivalent in the United States.

73. After l'affaire Jimmy Carr, Left and Right should agree on flatter, fairer, simpler taxes...
In a speech to Politeia in 2004, Oliver Letwin, then Shadow Chancellor, made a simple but brilliant observation. The complexity of a nation’s tax system, he said, was every bit as damaging to competitiveness as the overall level of tax. It’s true. The more convoluted the tax code becomes, the more time we have to take off work to comply with it. Tolley’s Tax Handbook is now 11,500 pages long, twice what it was when Gordon Brown became Chancellor, and the number of tax lawyers has increased commensurately. There isn’t a small business in the land that doesn’t need to employ an accountant.

A Labour frontbencher who has led the attacks on ‘tax avoiders’ in the City is at the centre of controversy after it was revealed his £1 million family home was funded from a tax haven. The purchase of Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna’s mother’s house was financed via a Jersey-based trust which helps ‘high net worth’ individuals to ‘plan for and mitigate tax liabilities’. Mr Umunna has attacked City fat cats who live by different rules to ‘ordinary taxpayers’.

77. Obama Proposes Eliminating Tax Cut Designed to Help Families Save for College
This is how White House wants to fund "free" community college. The Obama administration will soon propose raising taxes on middle-income families struggling to save for college–at a time when college costs are higher than they’ve ever been. For years, families have been using 529 college savings accounts. Once you invest after-tax dollars in these accounts, the money grows tax-free and you can withdraw the initial capital and the interest acquired without facing federal tax penalties if you use the money for education expenses.

78. Will France and Greece get an end to austerity? | John Redwood's Diary
Over the next few weeks democracy in Euroland is on trial. Most pundits and commentators agree that French electors voted in Mr Hollande to end austerity. Most agree that the massive swing against Pasok and New Democracy in Greece was a swing against austerity policies in the Euro and EU. The problem is, the voters may end up with little changed austerity policies come what may.Part of the reason is the voters’ own mistake. Many French and Greek voters who want an end to austerity think they can have that without withdrawing from the Euro. I fear that is very difficult if not impossible. Voters in Euroland seem reluctant to accept that the whole architecture of the single currency is founded on austerity all the time the huge imbalances between Germany and the rest persist. If the rich areas refuse to send much money to the poor areas – as they do – the poor areas have to deflate, cut wages and costs severely, until they can compete. This cruel economic logic is not popular, but voters are reluctant to conclude that the currency is at fault.
